Entered, nccording to act of Congress, in the year IfKS. by \VI L L I A M E. HARP E E , Tn the Office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washing-ton, D. C- cHSi prebs of M a X I T e R N , Chioabo. PREFACE, The "Hebrew Vocabularies" is intended (1) for students in llio Department of Hebrew of the Baptist Union Theological Seminary of Chicago, and (2) for the members of the "American Institute of Hebrew.'' The chief difficulty to overcome in the mastery of the Hebrew language is the acquisition of a vocabulary. There are but few words in Hebrew with which corresponding ones in English, of similar .sound and signification, may be associated. The old method of acquiring a voca- bulary, i. e., by looking up a word in the Lexicon every time it occurs until it becomes familiar — for this, life is too short. The average student will look for the same word twenty times before he will really Tcnow it; meanwhile he could have commited twenty words. Yet it is not well for a beginner to attempt to commit the Lexicon. Lists of the words which occur most frequently, should be given him to learn. Out of the seven or eight thousand vocables in the Hebrew lan- guage, about one thotisand occur over twenty-five times. If the learner will commit five or six of these a day, within six or eight months he will have mastered a vocabulary sufiicient to enable him to road any portion of the Hebrew of the Old Testament with ease and pleasure. Three words, those meaning to say, God and Son, occupy sixty pages of the Hebrew text. The sixty verbs given in Lists I and II occupy two hundred pgiges, and the first sixty nouns given in Lists VI and VII occupy two hundred and twenty-five pages — together about one-third of the whole Bible, and in this calculation derivatives are not included. In the Seminary classes, the book will be used as follows : Lists I— XI will be learned during the Junior year. The class will be required to learn the Principal Parts of the verbs and to know in which of the 4 PREFACE. species each verb is found. Tlie enumeration of tlie times which each form occurs is added mfirely to indicate which species are the most important ; e. g. 121 ^o apeak, occurs forty-one times in the Kal, but one thousand and fifty times in the Piel. TVOi to command, does not occur at all in the Kal, hnifive hundred times in the Piel. Every student should know that these verbs are used chiefly or exclusively in the Piel, just as a Latin student is supposed to know that the verbs memini and 0(Zi have no Present tense. For the particular meaning of the several conjugations, the student will be referred to the Lexicon. List XEI — XXIX will be taken up in connection with the corresponding grammati- cal work ; e. g., when the class is studying the peculiarities oP verbs n""?. List XXIV will furnish the verbs for synopses and inflection, and so with the other classes of Imperfect Verbs. List XXX— LIII will be studied, especially by the Middle Class; as occasion may suggest. Lists LIV and LV will furnish lexicographical work for the Senior Class. It is desired to call attention to the following points : (L) The "Vocabularies" is not intended as, in any manner, a substi- tute for the Lexicon, but to be used with constant reference to it. (2.) In the Lists of nouns arranged according to their signification (XXX— XLIX), and in the Lists of verbs and nouns with their Hebrew equivalents (LIV and LV), rare forms are occasionally given but only when it has seemed best to make the list exhaustive, or when the form was important, or had important derivatives. (3.) Inasmuch as it was the aim always to present the most iisual meaning of a word, secondary mst&3.A' oi primary meanings will often be found given. (4.) From the nature of the Hebrew characters, it is extremely diflficult to find in any Hebrew book a page typographically perfect. The points Hhirik, Hholem and Tsere, the upper part of Lamedh and the lower part ofKoph, or of final Kaph, will often break off in spite of the greatest care, not only in the process of electrotyping, but even after the form has gone to press. Instances of this may be found on almost every page of a Hebrew Bible or Grammar. The kind consideration of students is re- quested in cases of such a nature. (5.) There is no good student who does not desire to make notes, to put down, as his own, the results of his reading or examination for future use. To afford an opportunity for gratifying this desire, the book is inter- PKEPACB. a leaved, and it is hoped that each blank pnge will, in a short time, be as full as the one opposite it. A list of the books consulted in arranging these Lists is given on page 9. I am, however, especially indebted to Dr. Robert Young's "Hebrew and Chaldee Vocabuhxry" for the statistics in reference to the occurrence of the words,' while the Lists of Prepositions, Adverbs, Conjunctions and Interjections, though differently arranged, are substantially as given in Dr. M. M. Kalisch's flebrew Grammar. In the work of counting, verifying and arranging the Lists, and of giving the Principal Parts of the verbs, I have received valuable assistance from my brother, Mr. R. P. Harper. I am also indebted to Mr. Ira M. Price, and to Mr, 0. 0. Fletcher for aid in revising the sheets. Although unusual care has been taken in the work, it is reasonable to suppose that omissions and errors will be found. Corrections will be thankfully received. It may be proper to state that the book is not published but printed for private use, and that copies can be obtained only through the Hebrew Book Exchange. W. R. H. Morgan Park, January 2, 1882. NOTE TO THE SECOND EDITION. The necessity of issuing so soon a second edition of the "Vocabularies" prevents the addition of any new matter. The plates have been corrected so far as it was possible without making new ones. The old way of spelling grammatical terms, e. g., Kal, Kaph, etc., as a matter of course, could not be changed, though this would have been extremely desirable. The author trusts that, notwithstanding the many defects of the book, it will be found useful in the study of the language. November 1st, 1882. W. K. H. CONTENTS, Lists I— V.
