WITH A LIST OF THE LATIN NAMES OF TOWNS AND AN EXTENSIVE BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE SUBJECT. BY ROBERT ALEXANDER PEDDIE Author of " " Conspectus Incunabulorum : an Index Catalogue of Fifteenth-Century Books," "The British Museum Reading- Room," "National Bibliographies" Etc. LONDON GRAFTON & CO., 69 GREAT RUSSELL ST. PREFACE '\ Tnd books printed before 1501. have long been looked upon as a class apswrt, and their enormous rise in prices, during tW last twenty or thirty years, has drawn still more attention to them. The literature dealing with the subject has grown with the interest, unml we ha\»e now so large a number of volumes that the ordinary collector, librarian or book- seller has been unable to keep pace with the develop- ment. It is not so much a deliberate ignoring of recent research as a real ignorance of the work that has been done, and its application to the needs of a catalogue or bibliography. At this moment, when the Prussian Royal Commission for a General Catalogue of Incunabula is asking for information as to hitherto unregistered works, it behoves everyone to identify the fifteenth-century books in their libraries or collections. To this end, therefore, this little book has been compiled. All the important works dealing with the subject, from any point of view, have been catalogued and described, and whether information is sought on the 5 6 PREFACE author, the printer or the place of publication of a book, all the available authorities will be found set out, as also those dealing with types, illustrations, watermarks, and all the other minutia which go to make up the study of the fifteenth-century book. The collection of incunabula is almost impossible for anyone but the millionaire, but the study of the subject, thanks to the great libraries, is open to all, and the enthusiastic student can make many discoveries, even in the best catalogued and most efficiently staffed of these institutions. If this work is of use to others working in the same field, it will be sufficient justification for the writing thereof. R. A. PEDDIE. St Bride Foundation Bride Lane, E.G. CONTENTS I. INTRODUCTION Many libraries and private individuals possess among their literary treasures some books printed during the infancy of the typographic art — rthat period which by common consent ends with the year 1500. These books are placed aside and only brought out to be exhibited at rare intervals. Frequently the librarian or owner knows nothing about them excepting such facts as appear in their headlines and colophons. The task of discovering all about them, of finding a rarity lurking amongst them, perhaps a book of which no other copy is known and of which no library can boast, has been relegated to some day in the future. At this present time, however, owing to the work of many bibliographers, the identification of any particular fifteenth-century book has become comparatively easy. To-day it is only necessary to point out the way to enable the veriest tyro to collect all the information in existence in reference to any volume of that period. Somewhere about thirty thousand works of all kinds printed from the invention of the art to the close of the year 1 500 have already been identified and registered. There are, no doubt, many more still to be discovered, and, in fact, every new catalogue that appears contains some hitherto undescribed incunabula. II. GENERAL WORKS The method of arrangement of the various biblio- graphies and catalogues here mentioned is described as clearly as possible. 9 10 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS The two principal clues to an early printed book are : first, the author's name and the title of the work, and second, the printer's name and the place of publication. There are two indexes, covering the whole of the registered and identified incunabula, and it wUl be found that the easiest way to get full particulars about a fifteenth-century book is to refer to these two indexes first and from them get the reference to the full descrip- tion of the book required. The first of the two works deals with authors and their productions : Peddle (R. A.). Conspectus incunabulorum : an index catalogue of fifteenth-century books. Part I., A-B. London, 1 910. 8vo. PartII.,C-G. 1913. This is an index by authors, generally following the use of Hain as regards authors' names. To each entry is added a list of references. The entries themselves require little explanation. The date is that which appears in the book itself. If the place-name, which is given in the vernacular, is in brackets it indicates that the printer is represented by his name or mark, but that the place is not definitely mentioned. References in italics indicate facsimiles. The other index is : Burger (K.). The printers and publishers of the fifteenth century, with lists of their works. In Copinger (W. A.). Supplement to Hain. Vol. 3 1902. In this index the printers and publishers are arranged alphabetically and the lists of their works chronologically. Works without name of printer are under the Latin name of the town where printed. ' Books that have not ^See Appendix A. — An Index of Latin names of towns with the vernacular equivalents. In this list the names appear as in the books themselves. GENERAL WORKS ii been attributed to any town or press are, if dated, placed at the end in a chronological sequence, but if undated are left out altogether. To each book-title is added a list of the reference books in which the book is described. The author describes his work as indexing Hain, Copinger, Proctor, and Pellechet only, but as a matter of fact references are given to about one hundred other reference books in addition. These two indexes enable a student at once to obtain a view of the works of a printer or author, and by referring from one to the other additional information can be obtained. The list of authorities in the former index will be found to be useful in identifying obscure references in Burger. The bibliographies that are indexed in the above- mentioned works will now be described in detail. The most important bibliography, and the one that should be referred to first, is : Hain (L.). Repertorium typographicum. 4 vols. Stuttgart, 1826-1838. 8vo. This is arranged by authors' names as found in the books themselves, not the vernacular family name as used in the General Catalogue of the British Museum. For instance, the author of the De duobus amantibus will be found under Aeneas Sylvius, not under his family name of Piccolomini or under his Papal title of Pius II. Anonymous works are entered under the first word of the title, with exceptions, especially in German books. The Repertorium becomes very imperfect towards the end of the alphabet, as it was completed by another hand, owing to the death of the author, headings such as Virgil and Voragine being left out altogether. The total number of entries in Hain is 16,311. The work of Hain is supplemented by : 12 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS Copinger (W. A.). Supplement to Main's Reper- torium biblographicum. 3 vols. London, 1895-1902. 8vo. In the first volume of Copinger will be found newly discovered information about the books already cata- logued by Hain. The authors and titles are not repeated but the number forms a sufficient clue. Volumes 2 and 3 contain a catalogue of books not registered by Hain arranged by authors in the same manner to the number of 6832 entries. Volume 3 also contains the index by Burger already referred to. Supplementary to both Hain and Copinger is : Reichling (D.). Appendices ad Hainii-Copingeri Repertorium bibliographicum additiones et emendationes. 6 parts and index. Monachii, 1905-1911. 8vo. This work catalogues books unknown to Hain and Copinger and also gives full details about other books which have been previously imperfectly described. Each of the six parts is in two sections. The first contains 192 1 unregistered works, which are numbered consecutively through the six parts. The second half gives the full titles of books already possessing Hain or Copinger numbers. They are arranged by these numbers, but in one alphabet, in each part. The index volume has separate author indexes for the two sections, and an index by towns and printers which includes both. In 1 9 10 the Prussian Royal Commission for a General Catalogue of Incunabula, published : Nachtrage zu Hain's Repertorium und seinen Fortset- zungen. Als Probe des Gesamtkatalogs der Wiegendrucke. Herausgegeben von der Kom- mission flir den Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke. Leipzig, 1 9 10. 4to GENERAL WORKS 13 It contains the full descriptions of 393 previously undescribed incunabula, and at the same time acts as a specimen of the work ultimately to be published by the Commission. There is one other work, general in character, which is not yet altogether superseded, although most of the books mentioned in its pages have since been fully described. Panzer (G. W.) Annales typographic^ 11 vols. Norimbergae, 1793-1803. 410. The arrangement of Panzer is alphabetical by the Latin names of towns, under which the books are arranged chronologically. Vols. I-5 contain the fifteenth- century books, while Vols. 9 and 1 1 contain supplemen- tary lists. Indexes are provided in Vol. 5 and Vol. II. There has been compiled by Konrad Burger a most useful concordance to Hain and Panzer. Burger (K-). Supplement zu Hain und Panzer. Beitrage zur Incunabel-bibliographie. Nummern- concordanz von Panzers lateinischen und deuts- chen Annalen und Ludwig Hains Repertorium bibliographicum. Leipzig, 1908. 8vo. This takes the form of a list of the numbers of the books in Panzer with the corresponding number in Hain and vice versa. If the work is in Panzer and not in Hain, or the reverse, then other references are given, if pos- sible, and if not, the title is given. It will be noticed that Panzer's Deutsche Annalen are referred to as well as the work above mentioned. Panzer (G. W.). Annalen der deutschen Literatur. 2 vols. NUrnberg, Leipzig, 1788-1802. 4to. This is a catalogue in chronological order of all books in the German language printed up to the year 1520. 14 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS III. CATALOGUES OF LIBRARIES Besides the general catalogues and bibliographies of fifteenth-century books there are those which list the books in particular libraries. Pellechet (M.). Catalogue general des incunables des bibliotheques publiques de France. (Continued by M. Polain.) Paris, 1897, etc. 8vo. The catalogue of Mdlle. Pellechet registers, as its title indicates, the fifteenth-century books in the public libraries of France. Three volumes have been issued, bringing the alphabet down to Gregoiius. In 1898 there appeared the first part of: Proctor (R. G. C). An index to the early printed books in the British Museum, with notes of those in the Bodleian Library. (Supplements for 1899- 1902. Registers to the Supplements, by K. Burger.) London, 1898- 1 906., 8vo. This was the first attempt to arrange a large collec- tion of fifteenth-century books systematically and scien- tifically by countries, towns and presses. There are indexes of printers and towns, and five author indexes in which the books are entered according as they are in Hain or not ip Hain, in Campbell or not in Campbell, or printed in England. There is now appearing under the editorship of Mr A. W. Pollard : Catalogue of books printed in the fifteenth century now in the British Museum. Vol. 1-2, etc. London, 1908, etc. 410. The same order is adopted for this Catalogue as is used for Proctor's Index, but the books are fully described. References are given to Hain and a few CATALOGUES OF LIBRARIES 15 special bibliographies, but not to Proctor. Facsimiles are added to each volume of all the types of the various printers. There are many other catalogues of fifteenth-century books in particular libraries. If it is at any time necessary to find the location of the whole of the known copies of any work, then these various lists must be searched. Appendix B is a list of these catalogues arranged in alphabetical order by towns. IV. NATIONAL CATALOGUES The next class of bibliography to be described is the catalogue of fifteenth-century books printed in a special country. The most important is : Campbell (M. F. A. G.). Annales de lu typographic Neerlandaise. (Supplements 1-4.) La Haye, 1874-1890. 8vo. Campbell registers all the books printed in the Low Countries during the fifteenth century. The entries are in alphabetical order of authors with an index of printers at the end. A further supplement was issued by Proctor in 1897. Proctor (R. G. C). Tracts on early printing, IIL Additions to Campbell's Annales. London, 1897. 8vo. Spain has been similarly dealt with by : Haebler (K-). Bibliografia Iberica del siglo 15. . . . La Haye, 1903. 8vo. Portuguese books are included and the work is similarly arranged to Campbell. The work for France unfortunately remains imperfect. i6 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS Claudin (A.). Histoire de rimprimerie en France au 15 et au 6^ siecles. Vol. I-2, Paris, fifteenth century. Vol. 3. Lyons, fifteenth century. Paris, 1900-1905. Fol. The death of the author renders it very doubtful whether any more will be published. The work is not a bibliography in the • strict sense of the term. The history of each printer is given and most, if not all, of the books printed by him are mentioned. Many facsimiles are given. The works produced by the English printers will be fully described in a work by Mr Gordon Duff, which it is understood will be issued at no very distant date by the Bibliographical Society. In addition to the works which deal with the history of fifteenth-century printing in special countries there are many volumes devoted to the early history of the art in particular towns. These are set out in Appendix C, the list being arranged by countries in the order of the introduction of printing and then alphabetically by places V. BIBLIOGRAPHIES OF SPECIAL SUBJECTS Bibliographers have always had to face the remark that they know nothing of the contents of the books they spend so much time in describing. This is to some extent true, but two bibliographers dealing with fifteenth-century books have redeemed their class. The first book to deal with the subjects of early printed books is : Earless (C. F.). Die Litteratur der ersten hundert Jahre nach der Erfindung der Typographie. Leipzig, 1840. 8vo. SPECIAL SUBJECTS 17 The author examines and describes, the books issued before 1540 from the literary standpoint and groups them according to the topics dealt with. A later effort was : Steele (R. R.). What fifteenth-century books are about. In The Library, New Series. Vols. 4-8. London, 1903-1907. 8vo. In this series of articles Mr Steele deals with the four great medieval divisions of knowledge, Theology, Philosophy, Law and Science, and mentions the principal works in each division and section and attempts to ascertain, of the total number of books published, what proportion can be allocated to each class. During recent years, especially in Germany, there has been an increasing tendency to study early printed books from the subject point of view, and the following list shows the more important works in this field. Anatomy Choulant (L.). Geschichte und Bibliographie der anatomischen Abbildungen. Leipzig, 1852. 8vo. Arithmetic Smith (D. E.). TYPES We have now dealt with the identifying of fifteenth- century books by literary methods — that is to say, from the author's or printer's name occurring in the book. There are, however, many cases where it is necessary to identify a book by its type, especially where the "book" is only a fragment. The whole of the types used during the fifteenth century have been registered in : Haebler (K.). Typen-Repertorium der Wiegendrucke. 4 vols. Halle, 1905-1910. 8vo The main body of the work is a catalogue of all the types used by each printer, arranged by countries, towns and presses. The measurements of the types is given in so many millimetres to twenty lines of type, measured from the top of the short letters in the first line to the top of the short letters in the twenty-first line. In addition to these measurements if the type is a Gothic, the shape of the capital M is given in facsimile, and if a Roman, it is noted whether the Qu is a logotype or in separate letters. Further information is supplied as to initials, punctuation, and other points which help to the identifica- tion of the type. The index is in two parts, Gothic and Roman. The Gothic index is arranged by the form of the capital M, the varieties exceeding one hundred. These are subdivided by the number of millimetres to the twenty lines of type, so that if a book is printed in a type measuring 84 millimetres and with Haebler's M No. 42, the index must be referred to at M 42, under this will be found the types of all sizes using that form of M. Several types 84 may be found. Then 22 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS references can be made to the facsimiles of types to which Haebler refers. As to Roman type, the index is only divided into two sections, one with the Qu in one, and the other with the types that have the Q__u as separate letters. Under these headings the types are arranged by their measure- ments. VII. FACSIMILES Turning now to the facsimiles of type we have first : Burger (K.). Monumenta Germaniae et Italiae typo- graphica. Parts I.-IX., etc. Berlin, 1892-1913, etc. Fol. This work forms a collection of separate plates showing the most important types used in Germany and Italy. It is to be completed in twelve parts. An index was issued covering the first six parts. The next series of facsimiles to be published was : Dunn (G.). Photographs of early types, designed to supplement published examples. (The Woolley Facsimiles.) 5 boxes. Woolley, 1 899- 1 905. Fol. The series contains 5°° photographs mostly from books in the possession of the late Mr Dunn. The prints are mounted on cards, and are accompanied by a list which gives the printers' names and the title of each book. References are given to Hain and Proctor. The Type Facsimile Society was originated by Mr R. Proctor in 1900, and published a large number of collotype facsimiles. Type Facsimile Society. Publications. Oxford, 1 900- 1 908. 4to. FACSIMILES 23 An index was issued to the parts for 1 900- 1 906, and each year has a list giving the details of each facsimile. The work of the Type Facsimile Society has been taken up by : Gesellschaft fiir Typenkunde des 15. Jahrhunderts Verbffentlichungen. Leipzig, 1907, etc. Fol. The plates issued by this Society have one great advantage over any of their predecessors. Each plate is complete in itself, and no reference is necessary to any list or catalogue. The place of printing and the printer's name, the technical description of the type and a fac- simile of the capital M, the title of the book and the re- ferences to bibliographies, an indication of the location of the particular copy photographed, together] with complete alphabets of the large and small letters of the type, are all given on the plate itself. The four series of facsimiles described above are all general in their scope. There are, however, some other series of facsimiles to be described which limit their work to a particular county and therefore form a very valuable addition to the general collections. Taking these in their chronological order we have first : Holtrop (J. W.). Monuments typographiques des Pays-Bas au 15^ siecle. La Haye, 1868. Fol. This is an old book, and perhaps lacks some of the precision of the later works, but it is still invaluable for the types of the Low Countries. Then for France we have : Thierry-Poux (O.). Premier Monuments de I'impri- merie en France au 15^ siecle. Paris, 1890. Fol. It is impossible to work on any French presses with- out the help of Thierry-Poux. The plates are good. 24 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS and although for Paris and Lyons it is necessary to refer to the numerous facsimiles in Claudin (A.). Histoire de I'imprimerie en France au 15' et au l6e siecles. Vol. I -2, Paris, fifteenth century. Vol. 3, Lyon, fifteenth century. Paris, 1900-1905. Fol. it is very doubtful when Thierry-Poux will be super- seded as far as the provincial presses are concerned. For Spain a series of facsimiles exists in : Haebler (K.)- Typographie iberique du 15^ siecle. La Haye, 1901-1902. Fol. This includes Portugal, and the fifteenth-century types of both countries are very fully illustrated. Our own country is indebted to Mr. Gorden DuiFfor : Duff (E. G.). Early English printing. A series of facsimiles. London, 1896. Fol. In this work is illustrated the whole of the different types used in England in the fifteenth century. VIIL— GREEK PRINTING Most of the works just mentioned only refer to Gothic and Roman types, which of course formed the body types of the great majority of the books issued. In addition to these three other important types were used in the fifteenth century — Greek, Hebrew, and music type. Slavonic type was also used at Venice, Cracow, and Cetinje. For Greek type the authority is : Proctor (R. G. C). The printing of Greek in the fifteenth century. London, 1900. 410. This is a history and description of all the Greek types used before 1501 and contains facsimiles. HEBREW— MUSIC 25 IX. HEBREW PRINTING Hebrew books are very difficult to identify, but the scholar who really wishes to work on them will find a considerable amount of material in the works in the following list : — Rossi (J. B. de). De typographia Hebraeo-Ferra- riensi. Parmae, 1780. 8vo. Rossi (J. B. de). Annales Hebraeo typographic!. Sec. 15. Parmae, 1795. 4to. Steinsehneider (M.). Paris, 1883. 8vo. Simonsen (D.). Hebraisk bogtryk i aeldre og nyere tid. Kjbbenhavn, 1901. 410. Freimann (A.). Ueber Hebraische Inkunabeln. Leipzig, 1902. 8vo. Cohen (A.). Hebrew incunabula in Cambridge. Cambridge, 1907. 8vo. Amran (D. W.). The makers of Hebrew books in Italy. Philadelphia, 1909. 8vo. X. MUSIC PRINTING Music type was used frequently during the fifteenth century, principally for liturgical works. The three titles below indicate the best works to refer to for in- formation on the subject. Steele's English Music Printing (Bibliographical Society) may also be referred to for a 26 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS valuable statement on the historical aspect, but as there was only one English book with an attempt at music printing before 1 50 1, the bibliography does not come into this section. Vernarecci (A.). Ottaviano de Petrucci da Fossom- brone inventore dei tipi mobiU metallici fusi della musica nel secolo 15. 2da edizione. Bologna, 1882. Svo. Springer (H.). Zur Musiktypographie in der In- cunabelzeit. Leipzig, 1903. Svo. Molitor (R.). Deutsche Choral- Wiegendrucke. Regensburg, 1904. 4to. The last work contains some useful facsimiles. XI. WOODCUTS AND ENGRAVINGS The woodcuts and other prints of the fifteenth century occur in one of three different ways : As part of a block book in which the text as well as the illustrations is cut on the block, as separate prints and as illustrations to books printed with movable type. For the more technical standpoint and for general catalogues of the prints themselves reference should be made to : Dodgson (C). Catalogue of early German and Flemish woodcuts preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum. London, 1903, etc. Svo. Hind (A. M.). Catalogue of early Italian engravings preserved in the Department of Prints and Drawings in the British Museum. 2 vols. London, 1900- 1909. Svo. BLOCK BOOKS 27 For a description of the actual processes and their origin the introductions to the above-mentioned works should be consulted and a further reference made (for intaglio work) to : Hind (A. M.). A short history of engraving and etching. 2nd edition. London, 1911. 8vo. XII. BLOCK BOOKS The block books form a very interesting class and a considerable controversy has raged around them. By placing them in front of the section dealing with single points it has not been intended to thereby indicate that that is their proper chronological position. The follow- ing books deal exhaustively with the subject : — Sotheby (S. L.). Principia typographica. The last work mentioned is of great importance, as it not only deals with the block books, but with single prints and with all the illustrated books published in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the Scandinavian countries. XIII. SINGLE PRINTS The separate prints above referred to had been neglected until recent years. Since 1906 a series of facsimiles and descriptions has been published in Germany and a very large number of the single prints existing in the libraries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland have been dealt with. The title of this series is : Heitz (P.). Einblattdrucke des I5ten Jahrhunderts. Strassburg, 1 906, etc. Fol. and a list of the individual volumes follows. Lehrs (M.). BOOK ILLUSTRATION The section of prints occurring in printed books is the largest and perhaps the most important from the stand- point of this book. The most useful introduction to the subject is : Pollard (A. W.). Early illustrated books. London, 1893. 8vo. This work gives a clear account of the early develop- ment of illustrated books. A considerable number of works have been published which give facsimiles or descriptions enabling the student to trace a woodcut or engraving. Schreiber's work has been already mentioned, but the title of Vol. 5, which deals with this special section, is repeated here. Schreiber (W. L.). Manuel de I'amateur de la gravure sur bois et sur metal au l^e. siecle. Tom $e. Contenant un Catalogue des incunables a figures imprimes en AUemagne en Suisse, en Autriche Hongrie et en Scandinavie. Parts I. -II. Leipzig, 1910-1911. 8vo. The catalogue is arranged by authors and the wood- cuts of each book are fully described. The work finishes with an index by towns and printers and con- cordances showing which of the books in Hain, Copinger and Proctor are dealt with. 32 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS Many of the German woodcuts are illustrated in : Muther (R.). Die deutsche Biicher-illustration der Gothik and Friihrenaissance (1460-1530). 2 vols. Miinchen, 1884. Fol. There are also monographs on the illustrations of Liibeck and Strassburg. LtJBECK Tronnier (A.). Die Liibecker Buchillustration des I5ten Jahrhundundens. Strassburg, 1904. 8vo. Strassburg Kristeller (P.). Die Strassburger Biicherillustration im 15 und im Anfang des 1 6 Jahrhunderts. Leipzig, 1888. 8vo. As an appendix to the German series, there is a handbook to those of Basel. Basel Weisbach (W.). Die Baseler Buchillustration der 15 Jahrhundert. Strassburg, 1896. 8vo. For illustrated books published in France the student is again referred to Claudin's Histoire de Pimprimerie en France. There is also a volume of reproductions which may be looked at but used with caution. Gravures sur bois tir6es des livres Fran9ais du 15^. siecle. Paris, 1868. 4to. Several works dealing with V^rard and his illustrated books will be found in Appendix C, but the following work dealing especially with the woodcuts has been placed here : — Renouvier (J.). Des gravures en bois dans les livres d'Ant. V^rard. Paris, 1859. 8vo. BOOK ILLUSTRATION 33 Italian illustration has a few guides, two at least covering the whole field and forming good introductions to a study of the subject. Lippmann (F.). Der Italienische Holzschnitt in 15 Jahrhundert. Berlin, 1885. Fol. Lippmann (P.). The art of wood-engraving in Italy in the fifteenth century. London, 1888. 8vo. Pollard (A.W.). Italian book illustrations, chiefly of the fifteenth century. London, 1894. 8vo. Reid (G. W.) Works of the Italian engravers of the fifteenth century reproduced in facsimile. London, 1884. Fol. For Venetian presses the work of the Prince d'Essling is all-sufficient. Essling (Prince d'). Les livres a figures venitiens de la fin du I5e. sifecle et du commencement du l6e. Florence, 1907, etc. Fol. The date of the first illustrated edition of a book governs the arrangement, all the later editions being grouped after the first. Vol. I, Parts I.-II. contain the fifteenth-century books. Presumably the last part when published will contain indexes which are wanted very badly in order that the work can be consulted with ease. The Florentine woodcut books have been catalogued and described by : Kristeller (P.). Early Florentine woodcuts, with an annotated list of Florentine illustrated books. 2 vols. London, 1897. 8vo. The woodcuts of the Low Countries have been ex- haustively dealt with by : Conway (W. M.). The woodcutters of the Nether- lands in the fifteenth century. In three parts. 34 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS I. History of the woodcutters. II. Catalogue of the woodcuts. III. List of the books con- taining woodcuts. Cambridge, 1884. 8vo. This work, as will be seen from the title, describes the work of the illustrators of the Low Countries in detail. It will be found very valuable. The development of the study of woodcuts has re- sulted in some special monographs being produced which give most useful details. Kautzsch (R-)- •'^'^ Holzschnitte der Kblner Bibel von 1479. Strassburg, 1896. Bvo. This work deals with the woodcuts of the Low German Bible issued by Quentell at Kbln in 1479. Schreiber (W. L.) and Heitz (P.). De deutschen " Accipies " und Magister cum Discipulus Holz- schnitte als Hilfsmittel zur Incunabelbestimmung. Strassburg, 1908. 8vo. There are many books issued during the latter part of the fifteenth century which have some modification of a school scene as a title-page cut. The whole of .the varieties of this design are catalogued in the above work and the books noted in which they appear. Heitz (P.). Christus am Kreuz. Kanonbilder der in Deutschland gedruckten Messbiicher des I5ten Jahrhunderts. Strassburg, 1910. Fol. This is another case of a monograph on a particular form of cut. It relates to the Crucifixion cut usually found in Missals immediately preceding the Canon of the Mass. XV. COLOUR PRINTING Finally, as regards illustrations, there are a few fif- teenth-century books containing illustrations printed in MAPS— INITIALS 35 colours. For full particulars as to the use of coloured inks during this period reference should be made to : Burch (R. M.). Colour printing and colour printers. London, 1910. 8vo. XVI. MAPS Maps as occurring in early printed books are naturally either woodcuts or copperplate engravings. The two British Museum catalogues by A. M. Hind and C. Dodg- son, of Italian engravings and German woodcuts respec- tively, should be referred to, the Italian engraved maps being of course specially dealt with in Mr Hind's work. XVII. INITIALS Printed initials are very important in the study of in- cunabula. It is very often the case that an ornamental initial will give a clue to the printer when everything else fails. The general book on the subject is : Jennings (O.). Early woodcut initials. London, 1908. 4to. but much information is to be found in the books on illustration {see XIII.). The initials used by Griininger at Strassburg have been facsimiled and described in : Heitz (P.). Der Initialschmuck in den elsassischen Drucken des 15 und 16 Jahrhunderts. 2te Reihe. Zierinitialen in Drucken des Johann Griininger. (Strassburg, 1483-1531). Strassburg, 1897. 4to. 36 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS XVIII. PRINTERS' MARKS The marks used by the early printers afford a useful clue when the book does not give any more definite information. There are lists and facsimiles of these printers' marks which enable almost all to be identified very quickly. The list following gives first the general collections and then collections on special countries and towns arranged alphabetically. Both-Scholtzius (F.). Thesaurus symbolorum ac emblematum, i.e.. Strassburg, 1892. Fol. 38 FIFTEENTH-CENTURY BOOKS XIX. COLOPHONS The colophons of the early printers afford an interest- ing study apart from their mere utilitarian value. Mr A. W. Pollard has written an interesting account of the origin and growth of the colophon. Pollard (A. W.). An essay on colophons. (Caxton Club.) Chicago, 1905. 4to. XX. TITLE-PAGES The title-page does not appear in many fifteenth- century books, although it was used as early as 1463. The only work on its early history is : Pollard (A. W.). Last words on the history of the title-page, with notes on some colophons. London, 1 89 1. 4to. De Vinne's " Title-Pages as seen by a Printer," 1902, being more of a practical work on design in typography. XXI. SIGNATURES The origin and development of signatures in early printed books has been dealt with in the two books undermentioned. Serna Santander (G. A. de la). Memoire sur I'origine et le premier usage des signatures et des chiftres dans I'art typographique. Bruxelles, 1796. 8vo. Blades (W.). Bibliographical miscellanies. I. The pse and development of signatures in books. London, 1890. 8vo. WATERMARKS 39 XXII. WATERMARKS Watermarks in paper afford some slight help in locat- ing the place of origin of an early book. At the same time paper no doubt was sent from place to place, perhaps even to considerable distances, and it is very unsafe to rely on the evidence of a watermark alone. Some information on this subject will be found in the third volume of Sotheby's "Principia Typographica," 1858. However, the most complete work is quite recent, and possesses the enormous number of 16,000 illustrations of watermarks. Briquet (C. M.). Les filigranes : dictionnaire histor- ique des marques du papier des leur apparition vers 1282 jusqu'en 1600. 4 vols. Paris, 1907. Fol. The illustrations in this work are arranged alphabetic- ally according to their subject, and it becomes almost a simple matter to identify any particular mark. Many other works exist, a few of the more important titles being subjoined : Del itlarmol (F.). Dictionnaire des filigranes classes en groupes alphabetiques et chronologiques. Namur, 1900. 8vo.
