The arrange- ment of counties is according to the Decimal classificatioti, and under the counties alphabetically by towns ; histories of villages being included under the township of which they form a part. Dates of incorporation and of origin are given, also the name of the parent town in cases of subdi- vision. A number of works on Connecticut as a whole are grouped at the beginning as a brief selection for ready reference. The term local history is employed in its restricted sense, allied topics of education, manufactures, commerce, geology, Indians, etc., being omitted. The ecclesiastical affairs of the towns, however, have been so closely interwoven with civil history, specially in early days, that all such material is incorporated. Genealogies of old Connecticut families and individual biographies, though of considerable historical value, are excluded because of their great number and as outside the strict scope of this list, and also because families and persons of sufficient importance in a locality for separate study are indicated in general chapters or works. Among biographies which should not be overlooked is Sprague's Annals of the American pulpit. A. P. C. Griffin's indexes and Poole's Index have been freely used. Important historical events like the Danbury expedition and the storming of Fort Griswold are treated in separate works, and therefore references have not been given to general histories. Since about 1888 the city directories very often include lists of persons who have died or married during the year, and in some cases also lists of removals from town. 176 NEW YORK STATE LIBRARY INDEX OF TOWNS WITH COUNTIES IN WHICH THEV ARE LOCATED Town County Abington, see Pomfret, Windham Andover Ansonia Ashford Avon Barkhamsted Beacon Falls Bean Hill, see Nor- wich Berlin Bethany- Bethel Bethlehem Birmingham, see Derby Bloomfield Bolton Bozrah Branford Bridgeport Bridgewater Bristol Brookfield Brooklyn Burlington Canaan Canterbury Canton Centerbrook, see Essex Chaplin Chatham Cheshire Chester Clinton Colchester Tolland New Haven Windham Hartford Litchfield New Haven New London Hartford New Haven Fairfield Litchfield New Haven Hartford Tolland New London New Haven Fairfield Litchfield Hartford Fairfield Windham Hartford Litchfield Windham Hartford Middlesex Windham Middlesex New Haven Middlesex (< New London Town Colebrook Columbia Cornwall Coventry Cromwell Danbury Danielsonville, see Killingly Darien Derby Durham Eagle Rock, see Thomaston East Granby East Haddam East Hampton, see Chatham East Hartford East Haven East Lyme East Windsor Eastford Easton Ellington Enfield Essex Fair Haven, see New Haven Fairfield Farmington Franklin Glastonbury Goshen Granby Greens Farms, see Westport County Litchfield Tolland Litchfield Tolland Middlesex Fairfield Windham Fairfield New Haven Middlesex Litchfield Hartford Middlesex Hartford New Haven New London Hartford Windham Fairfield Tolland Hartford Middlesex New Haven Fairfield Hartford New London Hartford Litchfield Hartford Fairfield CONNECTICUT LOCAL HISTORY 177 Town Greenville, see Nor- wich Greenwich Griswold Groton Guilford Haddam Hamden Hampton Hanover, see Lisbon, Hartford Hart] and Harwinton Hebron Huntington Jewett City, see Gris- wold Kent Killingly Killingworth Lebanon Ledyard Lisbon Litchfield Lyme Madison Manchester Mansfield Marlborough Mattatuck, see Water- bury Meriden Middle Haddam, see Chatham Middlebury Middlefield Middletown Milford Monroe County New London Fairfield New London New Haven Middlesex New Haven Windham New London Hartford a Litchfield Tolland Fairfield New London Litchfield Windham Middlesex New London Litchfield New London New Haven Hartford Tolland Hartford New Haven Middlesex New Haven Middlesex u New Haven Fairfield Town Montville Morris Mortlake, see Pom- fret Mount Carmel, see Hamden Mystic, see Stoning- ton Naugatuck New Britain New Canaan New Fairfield New Hartford New Haven New London New Milford New Preston, see Washington Newington Newton Norfield, see Weston Norfolk North Branford North Canaan North Coventry, see Coventry North Haven North Mansfield, see Mansfield North Stamford, see Stamford North Stonington Northfield, see Litch- field Northington, see Avon Norwalk Norvvich Old Lyme County- New London Litchfield Windham New Haven New London New Haven Hartford Fairfield 1.
