ANNOUNCEMENT. All men should devote some time and thought to the study of Architecture, for Architecture is the noblest of all the arts, it not only delights the eye, but makes modern •civilization possible. When contemplating building, a prospective owner's first thought should be the selection of his professional adviser and, in choosing him, great care should be exercised to select a man of thorough training and sterling integrity for if an incompetent or unre- Jiable man be chosen, the result will be unsatisfactory, no matter how much money and enthusiasm the owner may expend. Building is not a work that should be undertaken without mature consideration, for architectural creations, after they are once produced, are not easily put aside or avoided but stand as lasting monuments of the good or evil that may be incorporated into them. Much poor work is due to the lack of appreciation on the part of owners as to what ■constitutes good Architecture, for this reason architectural aberrations continue to be -erected and incompetent architects to flourish, but it is very encouraging to note that the better people are now taking a decided interest in Architecture and are beginnning to be able to form an intelligent opinion upon the merits of such buildings as are brought to their notice. This is a step in the right direction, for as soon as the public is able to .appreciate good Architecture so soon will they demand it, and when they do demand it, there will be no trouble in finding architects capable of meeting the demand. Believing professional men should always strive to raise the standard of their profes- sion, and that the public is always anxious to learn of the developments taking place in any field of art or industry, the Cleveland Architectural Club presents its Second Annual Exhibition, trusting that the work shown will prove of interest and value to all. Murphy Varnish Company, City: Gentlemen— Replying to your request to reduce to writing a verbal statement concerning your Transparent Wood Finishes made to your Mr. Manning some few days ago, I have pleasure in subscribing as follows, viz. : That your Transparent Wood Finish, Interior, will cover twenty square yards more to the gallon than other finishes used in my business, and on account of its freedom of working, enables labor to increase in productiveness to an appreciable extent. These are two reasons for my preference for this grade of your Varnishes, and another reason, more vnluable, is its extreme durability. This fact proves itself in one of the finest residences in the city, which I finished with your Transparent Wood Finish, Interior, over ten years ago; and in going over the work this summer in connection with finish- ing a new addition to the house, built by the present owner, Hon. Tom L. Johnson, I found that ten years' wear had made very little impression on it. These are facts that bear me out in recommending your Transparent Wood Finishes to all who are looking for good investment in hardwood finishing. Very truly yours, (Signed) WM. FLOOD.
