M. LITT. D. Librarian of the Syracuse Public Library since A. D. 1880 Syracuse Public Library CATALOGUE OF THE J. WILLIAM SMITH COLLECTION PREFACE This collection of early printed books and rare editions was presented to the library in June, 1908, by Mr. J. William Smith who has been a trustee of the institution and active in its in- terests since 1894. The inscription on the tablets placed on the cases which contain the books states the motive of the gift, and reads as follows : "This beginning of the J. William Smith Collection, illustrative of the art of bookmaking, is given for the use of the people, to the Syracuse Public Library in testimony to the long and faith- ful service of the Rev. Ezekiel Wilson Mundy, A. M., Litt. D., Librarian, and in recognition of his personal friendship by J. William Smith a trustee of the Library, August 1908." The collection consists of 447 volumes including manuscripts written on vellum and illuminated, some incunabula, many early editions of classical authors, fine specimens of early printing and engraving and some especially good early and rare editions of English, Italian and French authors together with a few American imprints. The books are shelved in the Trustees' Room, which adjoins the Reference Room. A plan of the classification is given at the end of this catalogue. We are indebted to the kindness of Dr. Ismar J. Peritz, Pro- fessor of Semitics, in Syracuse University, for transliteration of the Arabic and Turkish titles, given under the head of Oriental literature. 4 SYRACUSE PUBLIC LIBRARY MANUSCRIPTS Augustine, saint, bp. of Hippo.
