L. MOTT IRON WORKS FIFTH AVE. AND SEVENTEENTH ST. NEW YORK Copyright, itpS, by The J. L. Mott Iron Works 2 O H a < H 2 •< 0. UR manufacturing plant at Trenton, N. J., O comprises Potteries, Iron Foundries, Brass Foundries, Enameling Shops, Cabinet Shops, Ornamental Shops, Etc. In 1828 our works at Mott Haven were established. In 1894 our potteries were established in Trenton, where, in 1907, our entire manufacturing plant was concentrated. Not only do we manufacture all the goods we sell, but we manufacture them in ONE COMPREHENSIVE PLANT which is undoubtedly one of the most complete and thoroughly equipped of its kind. No expense has been spared to get the very best results in every department, our aim being to produce our products of the highest quality in their various grades, and to do so at a reasonable cost. The feature of concentration is also of very great importance — manufacturing all our goods in one plant assures the proper assembling and fitting of all component parts, and will also enable us to make correct and complete shipments. Main Office and Showrooms FIFTH AVENUE AND SEVENTEENTH STREET NEW YORK Branch Stores and Seliing Agencies BOSTON CHICAGO PHILADELPHIA SAN FRANCISCO ST. LOUIS PITTSBURGH DETROIT WASHINGTON NEW ORLEANS MONTREAL SAN ANTONIO OUR new showrooms, Fifth Avenue and Seventeenth Street, exem- pUfy the possibiUties and perfection of modern plumbing of the highest class, the exhibit being unequaled and eclipsing all our previous efforts. Eleven bathrooms, artistic and beautiful, novel and complete, are a revelation. They demonstrate what can be accomplished by the proper treatment of tiling and our porcelain and other high grade sanitary fixtures. It is just as essential for those contemplating building or remodeling their bathrooms to interest themselves in the plumbing fixtures, as it is to select designs of carpets, furniture, portieres, etc. We therefore strongly urge, that, whenever possible, a visit be paid to our showrooms where our goods may be examined and their superlative excellence demonstrated. N this book are illustrated over twenty bathrooms. They cover a very wide field, including not only the very finest goods, but others of moderate price. The cost of installation is substantially the same for first-class plumbing fixtures, as for those whose chief merit is their cheapness ; thus the ultimate difference in price is measured only by the slightly greater cost of the fixtures that can be counted upon to give complete and lasting satisfaction. Tiling makes possible the beautiful and artistic modern bathroom. "Our designs are delicate and refined, the out- come of many yea'rs of experience and careful study in this department, while the quality of the tiles is of the very best, all of which is strikingly shown by the complete bathrooms which are part of our varied and complete exhibit. Tiling to be satisfactor}-, must not only be carefully de- signed and selected, but should be set by skilled, reliable and careful workmen ; our experience of many years in this particular branch of the tile business has developed a high class of these skilled workers. THE BATHROOM Not many years ago it was usual, in planning a residence, to leave the bathroom as the last to receive consideration, with the result that it was often placed in an undesirable location and almost invariably smaller than it should be. This is now greatly changed, and the bathroom is justly considered one of the most important features of a residence. There is a realization of the fact that the bathroom is used, next to the living room and kitchen, quite as much as any other room in the house, and as a factor for health and comfort it is of the utmost importance. It is now conceded that the bathroom should be ample in size, so as to allow for the proper and convenient placing of the plumbing fixtures. In this connection we refer to the various ground plans that accompany the illustrations of interiors shown in this book, which are designed to suit the various sizes of bathrooms. Modern plumbing, as applied to a bathroom, does not . consist of merely three or four fixtures that bear no relation one to the other — on the contrary, each should be so selected that the bathroom as a whole produces an artistic effect and satisfies the critical eye. This we have always kept in view, the outcome being that the bathroom of to-day is a primary feature in the "house beautiful." RELATING TO IMPERIAL PORCELAIN, VITREOUS PORCELAIN AND ENAMELED IRON PLUMBING FIXTURES OR the best plumbing work, imperial and vitreous solid porcelain fixtures are ifi a class by themselves, nothing else being at all comparable either for beauty, cleanliness or durability. Clay products, after going' through a drying process covering four or five weeks, are placed in the kiln where they remain for about ten days subjected to a heat running up as high as 2500 to 3000 degrees, thereby insuring a glaze and a hardness of surface unattainable in the enamel on cast-iron, for the obvious reason that the latter can only be fired at a very much lower heat, consequently the softer surface of the enamel cannot be so easily kept clean or free from stains as the porcelain, i. e., by simply wiping with a cloth or sponge. In the manufacture of enameled iron ware we have reached a high degree of perfection. We also recognize that this ware will continue to be a considerable factor in plumbing fixtures, especially the enameled iron bath tub, which, until the advent of the solid porcelain tub, was the bath par excellence, and doubtless will continue to be largely used in the cheaper class of work ; only, we desire it to be well understood just what porcelain ware is and what enameled iron ivare is, so that the purchaser may not make a mistake or be misled by a similarity of terms. The bath tub has always been the most successful enameled iron fixture, i. e., when compared with lavatories and sinks, for the simple reason that it is not subjected to the same wear and tear. Used only for bathing purposes, it is less likely to be stained or chipped, and should, with ordinary care, be very satisfactory. Of enameled iron lavatories we can hardly say as much, nor do we think they should be considered in the same class with imperial or vitreous solid porcelain lavatories for good substantial work, and even while they may be cheaper their use may not always be an economy. Enameled iron kitchen sinks can hardly be expected to be enduring when we consider the usage to which the average kitchen sink is subjected. There can be no question about the superiority in every respect of the solid imperial porcelain or colonial sinks with their thick- ness of over two inches and their heavy glaze which covers not only the inside but the outside. For pantry sinks nothing is finer or more beautiful than imperial porcelain, although german silver or planished copper makes a durable and high-class fixture. We do not hesitate to say that an enameled iron water closet is altogether out of place in a private bathroom; indeed, unless under very exceptional conditions, we cannot see any reason whatever for their use, especially when the earthenware closets, that will neither stain nor get foul, can be obtained at the same price or even less. In view of various conflicting and specious claims made in recent years, we offer the above comparison for the consideration of all who may be interested in plumbing fixtures. M O T T MODERN PLUMBING Plate looo-A, Bathroom "Regent" THIS bathroom represents, in the highest degree, the union of the practical with the ornate. The three main fixtures are recessed ; the drawing of the curtains converting the bathroom substantially into a dressing room. The bath and receptor for needle bath are built into the floor and wall. The toilet table is provided with a manicure bowl. Tiling — The arrangement and shape of the fixtures lend themselves especially to the design, which is architectural in character, and a distinct departure from the conventional bathroom tiling. The tiles are exclu- sively our own in design and modeling, the tint being a delicate white with dull ivory finish. In the manufacture of large pieces of porcelain ware, some when taken out of the kiln are found to have slight marks or lines which do not detract from their general appearance or durability. The Tucker grease trap is composed of an inner chamber into which the waste water and grease passes, and an outer chamber through which the cold water supply for the house flows. The circulation of cold water around tlie outside, chills or congeals the grease entering into the inner cha'mber; the grease being ligiiter than water, gathers at the top and is thus prevented from passing through the outlet. The hollow central partition is an important feature in that it increases the area of cooling surface and also deflects the waste water upward, consequently bringing it in contact with a greater amount of cooling surface before is passes through the outlet. The Tucker trap is unquestionably the best grease trap made. Plate 7340-A Tucker Grease Trap 70 M O T T ' S MODERN PLUMBING Plate 7059-A Imperial Porcelain Class A Class B Plate 705g-A. Porcelain ware, with its substantial thickness, fine glaze and beautiful appearance, is preeminently tlie ideal material for sanitary appliances, such as wash tubs, etc. The prices are such that the tubs can be used in all fine and moderate-priced dwellings. The colonial wash tubs 'are excellent where cost is a consideration. They are light buff in color, glazed inside and outside, easily kept clean, practically everlasting, low in price aind infinitely superior to enameled cast-iron. The imperial and colonial tubs are absolutely impervious to moisture or germs. No porous material should be used for wash tubs. That absolute security is assured, and the question of careless or unskillful work disposed of by the sanitary-perfect screw connection, must be admitted by all ; moreover, those who have seen and used this device do not hesitate to say that it solves the question of water closet connection, and state, furthermore, that knowing such device to exist they would feel in duty bound to recommend the same to their clients as the only perfect connection which they could guarantee under all conditions. Note. — All ordinary connections require bolts through the base of the water closet. The sanitary-perfect is a screw connection, hence it is absolutely and permanently reliable and the unsightly bolts are dispensed with. Plate 5001-A The section shows how the threaded brass screw connection is secured into the base of the closet. The joint thus formed makes the brass connection equiv- alent to an integral part of the closet which is impossible to loosen or disturb in the slightest degree. Plate 5002-A Plate 5002-A shows the " Silentis " closet with the sanitary-perfect screw connection and the threaded floor coupling which is connected to soil pipe. 77 EIGHTY YEARS OF SUPREMACY 1828-1908 HE name of "Mott" has been for nearly a T century a synonym for the highest grade plumbing goods at a moderate price.
