MARTINDELL, M.A.IOxon.), F.R.A.I. Bairister-at-Law. LONDON THE BOOKMAN'S JOURNAL 173, FLEET STREET, E.C.4. NEW YORK JAMES F. DRAKE. INC. 1922 z f\5as oz^l PREFACE To the fact that in the course of many years I gathered tog-ether what became known as the most comprehensive collection of the writings of Rudyard Kipling, and to the fact that no-one has compiled an exhaustive bibliography of these writings is due this work. How great has been the need for a full and up to date bibliography of Kipling's works needs no telling. From Lahore to London and from London to New York his various publishers have woven a bibliographical maze such as surely can hardly be paralleled in the literature about literature. The present attempt — the first which has been made in England, so far as I know, on any extensive scale — to form a detailed guide to this bibliographical maze is necessarily tentative; and despite all errors and omissions, for which, as a mere tyro, I crave indulgence, I trust that the following pages will provide not only a handy record for collectors of the writings of our great imperialist poet and novelist, but a basis for the fuller and more perfect work, which the future will bring forth. The collations of, and the notes to, the various editions here set out were based, with very few exceptions, entirely on the books, manuscripts, etc., that formed my collection. In regard to the collations, unless otherwise stated, it may be taken that reverses of preliminary pages are blank — thus, Half-title; Title-page; Contents; and Preface make 8 pp. References are made occasionally to the " Uniform Edition," which is not described among the Collected Edi- tions at the end of this book for the reason that in some cases the " Uniform Edition " volume is the First Edition and is therefore fully collated in its chronological order. The " Uniform Edition " was started by Messrs. Macmillan & Co. in 1899, and the earliest book issued in that binding, which is a first edition, was Stalky & Co. For great assistance in the formation of my Kipling collection I was mainly indebted to Mr. Francis Edwards, Mr. Ernest Maggs, Mr. J. G. Millward, and Mr. .Walter Spencer, to whom I desire to take this opportunity of expressing my cordial thanks. I have also to acknowledge the sympathetic and practical assistance given to me by my sister, Miss K. M. Martindell, to whose arduous toil I owe much. Nor must I omit to mention the considerable help I have derived in the actual compilation of this bibliography from reference to that invaluable storehouse of information The Works of Rudyard Kipling, (New York, Dodd Mead & Company, 1901), and also the help given by " The Book- man's Journal " staff. To Rudyard Kipling himself, of course, above all, is due the many and pleasant hours I have spent among his elusive " firsts " from penny numbers, which became worth their weight in gold, to the collected sets, which represent so magnificently the industry of this virile and versatile ''master of every trade." 8th May, 1922. Collation: — 12mo, pp. xii + 182; consisting of Portrait; Title-page ; Contents ; and Biographical Sketch, pp. [vii]-xii; Text pp. 1-182; followed by pp. 2 of Adver- tisements. Issued in blue paper covers. Contains 6 stories namely : — " The Courting of Dinah Shadd," (from Macmillan's Magazine, March, 1890) ; " The Man Who Was," (Macmillan's Magazine, April, 1890) ; "A Conference of the Powers," (United Service Magazine, June, 1890) ; " Without Be- nefit of Clergy," (Macmillan's Magazine, June, 1890) ; " On Greenhow Hill," (Macmillan's Magazine, September, 1890); and " The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney," (Macmillan's Magazine, December, 1889) ; all of which were collected later in Life's Handicap, except the last story which was collected in Many In- ventions. In the Second Edition " The Record of Badalia Herodsfoot " was substituted for " The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney," so that this edition contained only pp. 177 of text. This edition was pub- lished at the end of November, 1890. The reason for this change is to be found in various letters to the Athenceum, the first of which, dated October 4, 1890, was from Kipling, who stated that these stories had been collected by Harper & Brothers without authority, and he accused them of literary piracy. The firm replied that they had purchased the " serial rights '" of all the stories except " The Incarnation of Krishna Mulvaney," for which they tendered Kipling £10. Several letters followed, the last being from Messrs. Harper & Brothers on November 25, 1890, stating they had omitted from their series the story " The Incar- nation of Krishna Mulvaney " and had substituted " The Record of Badalia Herodsfoot " in its place, the latter having appearet in Harper's Weekly on November 15th and 22nd, 1890. There is another issue by M. J. Wheeler & Co, | Allahabad. | 1891. | [line] | [All Rights Reserved.] Collation : — 8vo, pp. viii + 108 ; consisting of pp. 4 of Advertisements; Title-page; and Contents; Text pp. [1J-108; followed by pp. 10 of Advertisements. Issued in green-grey paper wrappers, with a lithographed design on front and back covers by Brownlow Fforde. Lettered " No. XIV of Wheeler & Co's Indian Railway Library. One Rupee." Contains 10 Sketches; all except " The Council of the Gods," " On the Banks of the Hugli," and " In an Opium Factory," had appeared originally in The Week's News. This book was published without Kipling's permission. His books were selling so well, that his publishers in 1891 published three volumes containing articles he had contributed to Indian news- papers. The volumes were respectively entitled The City of Dread- ful Night and Other Sketches, The Smith Administration, and Letters of Marque No. 1. Accordingly Kipling had these three books suppressed and only a few copies of each escaped when the stocks were destroyed. See Numbers 41 and 42. A copy of City of Dreadful Night and Other Places in a plain grey wrapper and £ an inch taller, being uncut, is recorded, but this is probably a proof copy. The Sketches in The City of Dreadful Night, and the sources from which they were reprinted, are as follows : — " A Real Live City " (The Week's News, No. 10, March 10, 1888). " The Council of the Gods." " On the Banks of the Hugli." ' With the Calcutta Police " (The Week's News, No 11, March 17, 1888). * The City of Dreadful Night," (The Week's News, No. 12, March 24, 1888). " Deeper and Deeper Still " (The Week's News, No. 13, March 31, 1888). " Concerning Lucia " (The Week's News, No. a5, April 14, 1888). " Among the Railway Folk " (The Week's News, Nos. 29, 31 and 33 ( July 21, August 4 and 18, 1888). " The Giridih Coal Fields " (partly in The Week's News Nos 34 and 35, August 25th and September 1, 1888). " In an Opium Factory." 28 RUDYARD KIPLING (39) (First English Edition : 1891) The | City Of Dreadful Night | And | Other Places | Depicted By | Rudyard Kipling | Published By | Messrs. A. H. There should be a slip of apology pasted in and attached to the title-page of this English edition stating as follows : — " The Publishers beg to state that at the time of printing this Work they had over-looked the fact that the title had been previously used for a volume of Poems by the late James Thomson (B.V.). They have, however, received the kind" permission of Mr. Thomson's Publisher's to use it." Some later issues, however, lack this slip of apology. It has no folder. 38 RUDYARD KIPLING Both these pamphlets are fakes, and were probably printed within the last two or three years, and both emanate from America. The story attached to them is that Mrs. Rudyard Kipling in 1894 sent the manuscript of "In Sight of Monadnock " to the Cornhill Printing Press and ordered 60 copies, but not liking the title-page a new one was made, dated ten years earlier, and with the cut. On Mrs. Kipling being asked as to the authenticity of this story she replied : " There is not one single word of truth in these stories. I never sent this MS. to the Cornhill Printing Press nor anywhere else ; the whole thing is a fake from beginning to end, and I shall be glad if you will pass on this information to anyone who is proposing to assist these people by purchasing these pamphlets." " In Sight of Monadnock " originally appeared in The Times, April 13, 1892, and was reprinted in 1919 in Letters of Travel. It had previously been reprinted, most probably without the author's per- mission, in 1894, in a book entitled Picturesque Brattleboro, pub- lished in America. No. 13 | Price One Penny. | [device of a shield enclosing the words : — ] Horsmonden School Kent. This was a 12mo. cyclo-style production, published fort- nightly, each number consisting of pp. 12, no title-page^ and pink paper covers lettered as above. 45 A BIBLIOGRAPHY OF No. 13, May 14, 1898, contains a letter from Rudyard Kipling to the Editors, dated Easter Monday '98 and written from Cape Town, in which he acknowledges the receipt of their letter [asking him to give them a contribution and mentioning the high rate at which they paid their contributors] together with a copy of the School Budget, February 14th [No. 8] and goes on to say : " You seem to be in possession of all the cheek that is in the least likely to do you any good in this world or the next .... But on the other hand and, notwithstanding, I very much approve of your " Hints on Schoolboy Etiquette " and have taken the liberty of sending you a few more." He then proceeds to give 6 hints on the following points (1) what to do when in doubt about a quantity ; (2) why the two most useful boys in a form are (a) the master's favourite pro tern and (b) his pet aversion ; (3) the value of a confirmed guesser on a Monday morning ; (4) what to do when meeting a master when out of bounds ; (5) where to run when pursued by the native farmer ; and (6) why Sunday is the best day in which to take other people's apples. At the conclusion of the letter Kipling says : " You will find this advice worth enormous sums of money, but I shall be obliged with a cheque or postal order for 6d. at your convenience, if the contribution should be found to fill more than one page." This letter has never been collected. In the " School Notes " contained in the same number the Editors state that " there is absolutely no truth in the rumour that Mr. Kipling has been appointed a member of the regular Budget staff, nor is he ever likely to become one. We are accustomed to having our employes show a little deference towards us — to refer to our ' cheek ' is a piece of insolence of which no member of our staff would ever be guilty. . . . Even as the Sun is above the Moon and Stars or as the Union Jack is above the Stars and Stripes, so is a Magazine Editor above a casual contributor, even though the latter be a Kipling." As Mr. Rider Haggard had treated them even worse — taking no notice of their offer to advertise his books in their columns at half rates — the Editors go on to say : " If we could find the address of the writer of He is happy as he lingers on the ever golden shore, Where the Rudyards cease from Kipling and the Haggards are no more, we should place him on our free list for life." 3n the next number, Vol. I., No. 14, May 28, 1898, the Editors state that, owing to the number of applications for copies of the previous number, they have been compelled to make the price prohibitive, and they say " the price for the half-dozen unsoiled copies we have in hand is 7s. 6d. each " . . and they predict that . . . " in after years a set containing Nos. 13 and 14 will be worth untold wealth. The "Academy " is not far wrong when it calls No. 13 already worth its weight in platinum." The Editors go on to state that " they have scored heavily by securing a drawing from the pen of Max Beerbohm . . . the " Whistler of Caricature." Mr. Max Beerbohm 's letter, accompanying his caricature, written from " 48 Upper Berkeley Street " and dated " Friday, May 20th/98," says inter alia " I have read Mr. Kipling's letter, and I agree with you that it's tone is quite monstrous and unpardonable. I 46 RUDYARD KIPLING have much pleasure in complying with your request for a carica- ture of Mr. Kipling. If it meets with your approval, do not forget to send me a copy of the issue in which it appears. I am ani ardent collector of my drawings." In the following Number these enterprising Schoolboy Editors inter- viewed Mr. Max Pemberton and secured an autographed portrait: from him, which they reproduced.
