Telephone, Murray Hill 7680. €l)e Jiipling Coiiection rr^HIS is the most remarkable collection of tbe writings of Rudyard Kipling that has ever come on tbe market. Mr, "Williamson not only gathered all the rare First Editions with which Collectors generally are familiar but secured some items that are unique and others that are unknown, even to Kipling bibliographers. "The Smith Administration," published at AUahabad; 1891, is perhaps the scarcest of tbe Kipling First Editions, and will be recognised at once by all Collectors as of the high- est importance. 'They are, of course, familiar with No. 13 of the "Horsmonden School Budget," the school magazine pub- lished in 1898, containing a letter on school etiquette written by Kipling at the request of the young editors, and with No. 14, in which is reproduced the caricature of Kipling by Max Beerbohm; but Mr. Williamson not only secured these copies of the "Budget" but the Original Manuscript of Kipling's contribution and the Original Drawing of Beer- bohm 's caricature. The original letter to Kipling and one by Beerbohm make this item complete and of 'extraordinary importance. "The Scribbler" was a magazine in manuscript of which only two copies of each issue were written. This collection contains three issues to which Kipling contributed. Ignoring Schoolboy Lyrics, Echoes, and Quartette, all of which are in this collection, Kipling calls Departmental Ditties his first work. Mr. Williamson collected no less than three copies of the first edition of the Ditties, and one of them con- tains an inscription by Kipling. Tbe various Calcutta and London editions are, of course, also included in this sale. Among the many other rarities, these may be mentioned: Thirty-three numbers of "The Week's News," Allahabad, 1888, with tales by Kipling; the first issue of the first edition of Plain Tales ; the earliest form of Captains Courageous, of which only five copies were printed ; and the Letter of Marque, London, 1891, which is possibly unique, as aU but a very few copies were destroyed before they left the printer. The "Williamson collection also contains school books which Kip- ling used and other personal material, a number of books about Kipling, and the Original Manuscripts of four of his poems, one of which, containing forty-four lines, is unpub- lished. The Books consigned by Mr. Robert Carlton Brown and other owners are catalogued under a separate alphabet, be- ginning with Lot 123, and will prove of interest to buyers in aU departments of Literature. Entitled "The Legend of the Cedar Swamp" and signed at the end "J. R. Kipling." In a morocco slip-case. * An unpublished poem, written somewhat earlier than his "Scribbler" contributions. The beginning will give an idea of its character. "Darkness lay thick where e'er we trod Alone with Nature and with God Deep togs were many round our way And here 'twas half night and half day." 45 106. THE SCRIBBLER. "Dulce est desipere in loco." Vol. 1, No. 12; Vol. 2, Numbers 1 and 3. Together 3 numbers, folio, no covers. Hammersmith, 1879-80 * ' ' The Scribbler ' ' was a home -magazine written and edited by the children of Burne-Jones, William Morris, and by Eud- yard Kipling. It was begun in Nov., 1878, and lasted until March, 1880. The copies (there were two only of each issue) were written on foolscap sheets by May Morris and her sister. Eudyard Kipling was an occasional contributor, writing under the nom-de-plume of ' ' Nickson, ' ' and the above three numbers contain a story in two installments entitled ' ' My First Ad- venture" and a poem "The Pillow Tight" by him. With the above is an A. L. S. by Miss Morris regarding the ' ' Scribbler. ' ' 107. MANUSCRIPT POEM written by Kipling for "The Scribbler" when he was a lad. 3 pp. small 4to. 42 lines divided into 7 stanzas, with the heading ' ' The Dusky Crew. ' ' Signed with his non-de-plume "Nickson." In a cardboard slip-case. * The above manuscript, together with the two others in this catalogue, was secured from Miss May Morris, who was the scribe for the juvenile periodical for which it was written. ' ' The Scribbler ' ' expired before the poems could be included and these were found long afterwards among a mass of 'copy' by various hands. Miss Morris and Mr. Price, Kipling's old schoolmaster, both testified to the genuineness of the pieces be- fore they were sent to this country. 108.
