Levi Loring 81 Appendix 87 PREFACE. This pamphlet contains " The Eecords of the Church of Christ in Buxton " during the pastorate of the Rev. Paul Cofiin, D.D. ; that is, from the first formation of the church, March 16, 1763, until the ordination of his colleague, Rev. Levi Loring, Oct. 22, 1817. Prior to and including that date, the records are all in the handwriting of Dr. Coffin ; but, during the remainder of his life, they are almost entirely in the handwriting of his colleague, and are not included herein. Every thing in his handwriting is included, and nothing else, unless so noted. ' . While these records are in manuscript only, there is constant danger of their destruction. As a grandson of Dr. Coffin, and a native of Buxton, I wish to see the facts preserved which are so recorded, and therefore cause this pamphlet to be printed. Many of the old families will here find some facts that will interest them ; and the future historian of the town will not fail to appreciate their value. PREFACE. I do not undertake to add annotations. That Avould lead me into too wide a field, and one which I am not inclined, for the present at least, to enter. By putting the facts here recorded into a more accessible shape than they now are, I hope that they will become better known to the inhabitants of the town, and tend to pro- mote among them a better knowledge of, and more interest in, family history, than now exists. A Memoir and the Journals of Dr. Coffin were printed in the fourth volume of the Collections of the Maine Historical Society, which makes it unnecessary to speak fully of him here. CYEUS WOODMAN. THE RECOUDS OF THE CHURCH OF CHRIST IN BUXTON, JANUARY, 1798. *" I ^HIS Book, altho' not bo't till January 1798, contains the Records of the Church of Christ from its first Formation, & Reception of a Pastor in March 16. 1763. CHURCH COVENANT. TT TE, whose Names are hereunto Subscribed, apprehending ' " ourselves called of God into the Church State of the Gospel, do first of all declare ourselves unworthy to be so highly favoured of the Lord, and admire that free and rich Grace of his, which triumphs over so great Unworthiness ; And then, with an humble Reliance on the Aids of Grace therein promised to 2 10 THE EECORDS OP THE them who, in an humble sense of their Inability to do any good Thing, do wait on him for all their Sufficiency, do thankfully lay hold on his Covenant, and would chuse the Things that please him. We declare our Belief of the Christian Eeligion, as contained in the Sacred Scriptures ; heartily resolving to conform our Lives to the Rules of the same, as long as we live in the World. fVe give up ourselves to the Lord Jehovah, who is the Father the Son, and the holy Ghost ; & avouch him this Day to be our God ; our Father, our Saviour, and Leader, and receive him as our Portion forever. We give up ourselves to the blessed Jesus, who is the Lord Jehovah, And adhere to. him as the Head of his People in the Covenant of Grace and rely on him, as our Prophet, Priest & King, to bring us unto eternal Blessedness. We acknowledge our everlasting and indispensable Obligations to glorify our God in all the Duties of a Sober, righteous and godly Life ; and particularly in all the Duties of a Church-State, as we are a Body of People associated for an obedience to him in all the ordinances of the gospel ; And we thereupon depend on his gracious Assistances for our faithful Discharge of the Duties, thus incumbent on us. We desire, and intend, &, with Dependance on his promised and powerful Grace, we engage, to walk together as a Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, in the Faith and order of the Gospel, according to our Knowledge of the same, conscienciously attend- ing the public worship of God, the Sacraments of his new Testament, the Discipline of his Kingdom, & all his holy Insti- tutions, in Communion with one another, and watchfully avoiding Sinful Stumbling Blocks 'and Contentions, as becomes a People whom the Lord has bound up in a Bundle of Life. At the same Time, we do also present our Offspring with us unto the Lord, purposing, with his Help, to do our part in the Methods of a religious Education, That they may be the Lord's. And all this we do, flying to the Blood of the everlasting CHURCH OP CHRISt IN BUXTON. 11 Covenant for the Pardon of our many Errors ; and praying that the glorious Lord, who is the great Shepherd, would prepare and strengthen us for every good work, to do his will, working in us that which will be well pleasing to him ; To whom be glory forever and ever. May the Father of Lights conduct us all by his unerring wisdom in this momentous Affair ; & give it such a Direction and Issue, as may most advance his glory, and the edification of this church, and the churches in this Viciijity. PauIj Coffin, moderator. At an adjourned meeting of the Congregational Church in Buxton held at their meeting house on Wednesday the tenth of Sept: 1817 Rev. Dr. Paul Coffin, Moderator, Prayer by the Rev. Moderator Voted, that the baptismal Covenant, ■which has hitherto been practised upon in this church, be in future discontinued ; grant- ing at the same time to those already in that covenant Liberty to enjoy the Privileges of it, they being subject to the Discipline of the church. Received the following answer from Mr Levi Loring, viz. To the congregational Church and Parish in Buxton. Brethren & Friends. The Invitation to accept the office of Colleague Pastor, in the work of the gospel ministry, with your present ven- erable and beloved Pastor which has been communicated to me, through your respective committees demanded, and has received, my most Solemn Consideration. It is a Question that involves my own Peace the Comfort and Happiness of my Family, the Happiness of a Church of Christ, and the eternal Happiness of the Individuals composing your Society. It is a Subject connected with the Interest of the Redeemer's Kingdom, the eternal Salvation of immortal Soul^, and the Glory of God. In a matter of such infinite Importance, who is competent to decide ? None, I am sensible, but that Being CHURCH OP CHRIST IN BUXTON. 83 ■who is infinite in wisdom, and who seeth the end from the Beginning. To him therefore I have endeavored to refer the Suhject, beseeching him to guide and direct me to such a Deci- sion as shall be for the Advancement of the Kingdom of Christ, and the Glory of God. When I consecrated myself to the work of the ministry, I humbly hope I gave myself unreservedly to the Service of Christ ; to labor in any Part of his Vineyard, where he should place me, my only Anxiety therefore in this Business has been to ascertain the mind of Christ. That una- nimity with which you have proceeded, and other events of divine Providence connected with my Introduction and continu- ance among you, have led me to believe that it is my Duty to accept your Invitation, by answering your Eequest in the affirm- ative. I have not come to this Determination without many severe Trials of mind. . I feel myself altogether insufficient to perform those great and momentous Duties, which will devolve upon me. I enter upon the arduous work with Trembling. May I have Grace to depend on the Great Head of the Church, for Wisdom and Strength ; To look to him, who has said, " Lo, I am with you always." May the Connexion contemplated, if formed, promote the Peace and Prosperity of your Church and Parish, and increase the Happiness of your aged Pastor, but above all, may Almighty God give me Grace to preach the Gospel faithfully : And may he accompany the Dispensation of his Word among you with the effectual Influences of the Holy Spirit ; that I may save my own Soul and the Souls of them who hear me. I am your servant in Christ, Levi Loring. Aug. Sept. 10, 1817. Voted unanimously to accept this Answer. Voted, to appoint the fourth Wednesday, or the 22* Day of October next for the Day of Ordination. Voted to invite the Assistance of the following Churches in ■ the ordination of Mr. Loring. viz.
