THE ANDERSON GALLERIES PARK AVENUE AND FIFTY-NINTH STREET NEW YORK TELEPHONE PLAZA 9356 CATALOGUES ON REQUEST SALES CONDUCTED BY MR. FREDERICK A. CHAPMAN INTRODUCTION MAN has ever been fascinated by the joy of collecting, from the days when a pebble of special roundness, or a mammoth bone of enticing sharpness, appealed to the artistic tastes of our distant ancestors; and the bliss of it all has never been more pro- nounced than it is to-day, with our widening opportunities and abounding wealth (less war taxes). When books were first made, men longed to possess them and gathered them together in great libraries, only to be dispersed later by sale, or destroyed by the invasion of unwelcome neighbors who could not read. In our own day there. is no author so appealing to the collector as Thack- eray. Like Dickens, a number of his volumes were published in parts, and the possession of these with the original covers untinged by dust, and the advertisements intact, is the proper object of every well-regulated ambition, and to bind them would be but to destroy much of their value. Unlike many of the writer clan, Thackeray has other claims to our consideration and esteem. He was something of an artist as well, and a versifier of real ability. He was never a great painter or draftsman, but at the same time there is something appealing about his drawings that makes us overlook their technical short- comings. More often than not his drawings were caricatures, but their aptness and their humor made them appeal strongly to the reader. Conscious of his inability to draw well, Thackeray mod- estly permitted Doyle to illustrate The Newcomes, and while the result showed greater technique the world lost, and missed, Thack- eray 's brilliant humor. Most of us now, I think, acknowledge that Vanity Fcdr is the most admirably illustrated book extant. Original drawings by Thackeray are becoming more valuable every year, and this tendency increases as they inevitably become more rare. The examples treasured up by his daughters have finally been dispersed and many of the best of these have been acquired by public libraries or museums, or have been gathered into large private collections where they will probably remain for many years if not forever. Another object of the collector's longing is in the numerous letters which Thackeray wrote, for he was the most appealing letter-writer of his age, as entertaining as Horace Walpole, but without his ill-natured gossip. His handwriting was clear and attractive, and he frequently added a sketch that illumined the whimsical humor of the text. Examples of this trait are with reason justly prized, and this collection offers an opportunity to buyers that will not often occur again. Thackeray's first appearance in print was with Flore et Zephyr, London, 1836, but his initial iook was The YeUowplush Corre- spondence, gathered from Fraser by Carey and Hart, of Philadel- phia, in 1838. Both these items were printed without Thackeray's name, and the Philadelphia volume without even the knowledge of the author. Choice copies of both of these volumes are in this library. Thackeray appeared in this Philadelphia volume when he was almost unknown as a writer, and it is significant that at about the same time these discriminating publishers gathered to- gether the first collection of the essays of Maeaulay, while a Boston house published the first edition of Sartor Eesartus, Carlyle being unable to find anyone in London willing to undertake the task. The manuscripts and drawings in the Van Duzer library are second in importance only to the offerings in the Lambert sale, and it is probable that many years will pass before any manuscripts as extensive or as important will appear in the auction room. Probably the most conspicuous treasures offered in this sale are the several novels which had appeared in parts. Mr. Van Duzer, as shown in his bibliography, has devoted much time and energy to the collation of the advertisements that accompanied the several parts of the novels and it is probable that these copies of Yamty Fair, Pendennis, The Newcomes, and The Virginians, are more nearly perfect than any copies ever before offered for sale. The Pendenmis numbers are of especial interest, as when Thack- eray revised the text he left out an entire chapter with its two sketches. Vanity Fadr was also blue-pencilled, and a couple of paragraphs with three drawings disappeared from the revised text. The well-known drawing of Lord Steyne was probably omitted owing to some injury to the cut, as it was restored to its place in the edition of 1868, while the other three drawings were not repro- duced at aU. When The Virginians appeared, Harper & Brothers of New York paid the author something for advance sheets, and printed the novel in Harper's Magazine. To their annoyance the New York Tribune printed it also in their semi-weekly issue, declar- ing that the text was from the original parts as issued in London. They had a legal right to do this as there was then no international treaty on copyright, but by the same token the Harpers had an equal right to object. On one occasion Harper's made some slight alteration in the text, and the variation appeared likewise in the Tribune. Thereupon the Harpers exclaimed, "You are stealing 6 from us," while the Tribune charged the Harpers with altering Thackeray's text and then boasting of their iniquity. To point out aU the choice items in this collection would be but to reprint the catalogue itself, and yet this great collection con- tains certain rare items that cannot be lightly passed over by any- one in the least interested in this fascinating subject. Here are superb copies of The Snob and The Gownsman, of The Exquisites and King Glumpus, of The Second Funeral of Napoleon and The Book of Snobs. While The Constitutional and The National Standard are not in Mr. Van Duzer's collection almost everything else is, and we find here The Britannia, The Anti-Corn-Law Cir- cular, The Pictorial Times, The Corsair, and all the original num- bers of the London Times containing critical essays by Thackeray. Of course we do not discover the Memoirs of Major Gahagan, which Thackeray himself declared had been printed in America, which the Corsair confirmed, but which no one else has ever seen ; but we do find the Harper edition of The Great Hoggarty Diamond, another real first, of which the Athenaeum library in Boston pos- sesses the only other copy known (a fire having destroyed most of the issue). Mr. Van Duzer's collection of the first issues of The English Hv/mourists is probably the most complete that has ever been gathered together. Rare and tempting to the collector are also the Charterhouse Blue Boohs, recording Thackeray's youthful progress from 1822 to 1828, while The Snob's Trip to Paris, 'Mr. Thackera/y, Mr. Yates and the Garrick Club, and The Ballymulligan Polka, will bring joy to the hearts of the successful bidders and disappointment to a host of others. This copy was made by Wehner after the changes had been made in the original. It is about 29 inches in height with the base. Mounted on a pedestal of gray mottled marble. Liady Ritchie had never been satisfied with the bust in the Abbey. Upon Major Lambert's request to make a copy of it, a correspondence took place which resulted in Major Lambert being allowed to have a copy of 47 the bust if he would bear the expense of making the desired changes in the original. This is the copy made for Major Lambert, and the correspondence between him and liadt eltchie accompanies the bust. Lady Ritchie wrote Major Lambert, November 4, 1900: "I went to the Abbey to-day to the early 10 o'clock service and thought with true gratitude as I took my seat by the familiar father once more and not that strange travesty, which I had not liked to look at for I thought it would go down as a true representation of him, and I could not bear to think of it. I never thought to feel so happy standing by his monument as I did to-day." [see frontispiece] THE LEIGHTON PORTRAIT 248. OIL PAINTING. The plates are not referred to in the work, probably being added later, as they are not by Thackeray. The illustration on the cover only is his, henee the importance of having the cover in its correct state. This illustration was not reprinted. The genuine issue may be identified as follows: In the plate opposite the title, there is an inscription (none in the reprint), and on page 120, the thirteenth line has five stars (four in the reprint). The genuine cover may be distinguished by noticing that the shading on the cheek of Napoleon has six distinct short lines (three in the reprint) and the cover of the reprint is a blue-gray. 289. SKETCHES AND TRAVELS IN LONDON. 8yo, green levant morocco, gilt top, uncut, original wrappers bound in, by Riviere. London: Bradbury & Evans, 1856 This is one of the "Miscellanies." The initial paper was omitted from this by Thackeray, and the editor of the Library Edition of the "Works" in 1869 omitted the illustration to "The Curate's Walk" and replaced it with that designed for the introductory paper. This blunder was not corrected until the Macmillan edition of 1904, when, for the first time, the "Sketches and Travels in London" were represented complete. 53 298. SMITH (ALBERT). The Month. "Not Conducted by Members of the University." 8vo, Complete in THE Original Boards, in green levant morocco solander ease. Cambridge: Published by W. H. Smith, 1829 A SUPERB COPY OF ONE OP THE BAREST THACKEBAY ITIjMS. It WaS pub- lished in 11 numbers, beginning Thursday, April 9, 1829, and ending Thursday, June 18, 1829. The papers were then collected and issued with 5 prelimiaary leaves containing a Title, Dedication, Preface and Index. At the head of many numbers are the words ' ' Third Edition, ' ' "Fourth Edition," "Fifth Edition," which was probably done to pre- sume a large sale. A comparison with other copies shows that no com- plete sets were made up alike. Two points of uniformity do, however, appear: No. 4 is usually of the Fourth Edition, and No. 8, of the First Edition. The numbers are printed on various colored papers, and in this respect, also, no uniform method was followed, copies of the same number and same edition being on different colored paper. There is a peculiarity in the imprint which has generally been over- looked. Some of the imprints read "Printed for the Editors," but Nos. 6, 7, and 9 read "Printed for the Editor." We know from Thackeray's letters that two pieces at least in No. 6 were by him, and No. 9 is practi- cally all made up of the "Bamsbottom Papers." It is possible, there- fore, that those numbers reading "Printed for the Editor" are entirely by Thackeray. THE ONLY COPY KNOWN TO US 301. SNOB'S TRIP TO PARIS (THE), 36 pp., 16mo, sewn, uncut, wrappers wanting. In full green levant morocco case. Cambridge: W. H. Smith, n. d. The Exteemely bake Fiest Edition of this clever little piece, which has been generally attributed to Thackeray, on account of its being written about a "Snob" and printed by the same printer as Thackeray's "Snob." This is the pibst copy, and the only one, seen by Mr. Van Duzer, of the First Edition, all the other copies occurring being marked "Second Edition." This latter edition (also in the present collection, see following item), contains many typographical changes and differences from the First Edition. There is no " Moral ' ' as the final stanza in the First Edition, and this being an extra verse, all the preceding stanzas were moved up, so that on the first page there appear three, instead of two as in the First Edition.
