Perkins, 148 Pequot Avenue, New London, Connecticut 3 university press • JOHN WILSON AND SON • CAMltRIDGK, U.S.A. PREFACE THIS is the first of a quarterly series of alternate genealogical and historical pamphlets which will contain the history of the houses, lands, and fami- lies of Norwich, Conn., from 1660 to 1800. The historic pamphlets will be profusely illustrated with views of houses, copies of portraits and miniatures, and many maps. If the subscriptions should increase suffi- ciently to allow a more frequent issue of pamphlets, they will appear monthly, the yearly subscription to be- the same in either case. Revolutionary and colonial claims will be given, and the work will form a complete history of one of the most beautiful towns in New England, and should be of great interest to the residents of nearly every city in the Union, as Norwich not only sent out inhabitants to settle the neigh- boring towns of Windham, Lebanon, Canterbury, etc., but also many of the pioneers who founded towns in New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsyl- vania, Ohio, and other Western States; and in these pamphlets all persons of Norwich descent will find their lineage, and some account of the early homes of their ancestors. The genealogies will be brought down to the end of the eighteenth century, extending in some cases to the seventh generation. The families of the original settlers will first be given, — Adgate, Allyn, Backus, Baldwin, Bingham, Birchard, Bliss, Bradford, Calkins, Edgerton, Fitch, Gager, Griswold, Howard, Huntington, Hyde, Leffingwell, Mason, Post, Reynolds, Royce, Smith, Tracy, Wade, and Waterman; and if sub- scribers will send to the author the names of families from which they are descended, these will follow in order, precedence being given to those most in demand. The author has endeavored to condense and make the genealogical arrangement as simple as possible. Abbreviations are employed for words most in use, and a small table is appended to make these more intelligible to those who are not accustomed to works of this kind, and not familiar with this locality. The places of birth, death, and marriage are rarely given, as it is generally understood that these take place in the town where the parents reside, or, in the case of death of husband or wife, at the husband's place of residence; but when these events occur in other towns, then the name of the place is given, or the word at and a blank space indicate that the name is unknown. The author hopes for the co-operation of all descendants in correcting errors and furnishing data for blank spaces. Any information of this kind communi- cated to the author will, at the end of the year, be printed and sent to all subscribers, and in this way the family records may gradually become complete. The genealogical and historical pamphlets will be paged separately, each forming a volume by itself At the end of each family genealogy, names will be given of those whose lineage the author has been unable to trace. None of the descendants of Henry Baldwin were among the original settlers, but the author has thought it best, when possible, to include in one pamphlet all families of the same name. An index for each pamphlet will be furnished at the close of the year, and a complete index at the end of each volume. a,b about. aft after. App Appointed. 1) born.
