By lewis POCOCK, F.S.A. THE SECOND EDITION. LONDON: IN" PKINIiSD BY HARRISON AND CO. 45, ST. MARTIN S-LANE. JIDCCCXLII. PRIVATELY PRINTED : ONE HUNDRED COPIES ONLY. PREFACE. When the ensuing Catalogue was originally produced, it was chiefly intended to furnish an approxinaation towards a complete list of the principal Authors who have written on various parts of the science of Life- Assurance, Annuities, and the rate of Mortality; for the use and benefit of some of the many who are interested in the study of those highly-important branches of national economy. It was presumed that, to those who have commenced the collection of works on those subjects, the following list would be found of consider- able value; and might even notice some books with which they were unacquainted, in consequence of the comparatively limited circulation and rare occurrence of such volumes. For the same reason, it was readily admitted that the Catalogue was far from being either perfectly accurate or complete. Since the first appear- ance of these pages, however, the contents have been increased to more than double the original quantity, as well from the continued researches of the Editor; as from the liberal and valuable communications of many PREFACE. of those friends and professional gentlemen to whom he presented copies of the first impression. The works which are here recorded, form part of the materials collected for an original and familiar introduction to the principles, advantages, and practice of Life- Assurance, now published : and a very limited impression of the titles of the authorities consulted was issued with the view of procuring additional infor- mation for the completion of the volume. On account of the curiosity of the subject, and for the purpose of reference, the Editor has been induced to insert the following Catalogue in the conclusion of his work. 29, Montague Street, January, 1842.
