The verses inlaid, the title with portrait, cut close and inlaid, and the " S " of Shake- peare in facsimile. Six leaves (169-80) of " The Merchant of Venice " are inlaid, as also is the last leaf. The two wrong headlines of " The Merry Wives of Windsor " have been altered in M.S. A few corners and margins have been repaired and a few margins are slightly defective. One leaf (p. 11-12 in " King John ") has the bottom margin untrimmed. This copy is Number XVIII. in Sir Sidney Lee's Census of Extant Copies. It was the property in the 17th Century of the Shakerley family of Cheshire, into which married Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, third Bart. ; Sir Watkin's second son, the Et. Hon. Charles Watkin Williams Wynn (1775-1880), owned the copy till his death. It was purchased by James Beaufoy, grandfather of the present owner, for £141 10s., Peb. 28, 1851 EOGEB PAYNE'S BILL. " A great deal of Lettering done in the most correct Manner in Work This Book iS very Large — in page 11 in the Hist, of King John their is a Eough Leaf at the Bottom Six Leaves Inlay'd in so exceeding neat Manner as not to be seen without being told of it. In the Comedies pages 169-180. The Inlay'd Leaves taken from another Copy was Cutt down very much almost to the Black Line at ye Head margin at page 176 the Proof ye Red Colour at ye Edge the extent of ye margin. Those Six Leaves The Title with above 40 peioes to strengthen the Title. The Verses fronting the Title and the Last Leaf Inlay'd The Whole Book mended in a great many places and the Whole Book Carefully looked over to clean the dirt away took me 7 full days and i at 3^- : 6*. pr day ^61.5.9 Finished in the Taste I thought suitable to the Book. Both doublures are similar, but the. front one has these words in gold: "All SHALL YIELD TO THE MULBERRY TREE, MATCHLESS WAS HE WHjO PLANTED THEE, AND THOU LIKE HIM IMMORTAL SHALL BE." Both pieces of the Mulberry tree are stamped in blind letters " Shakespeae's wooDj Sharp, Stratpoed- ON-AvoN." The binding has been most neatly repaired, and is contained in a morocco pull-off case (See Illustration) Printed by Tho. Gotes,for Bobert Allot, and a/re to be sold at the Signe of the Blacke Beare in Paul's Ghu/rch-yard, 1632 [Colophon] Printed at London by Thomas Cotes, for John Smethwick, William Aspley, Biohard Hawkins, Bichard Meighen and Bobert Allot, 1632 A Large and Very Fine Copy, genuine throughout, measuring 13| in. by 9^ in. The bottom and inside . margins of the leaf of verses have been repaired, as well as the inside margins of the portrait and last leaf. The corners of a few leaves have been neatly repaired, and one or two holes filled up. There is a very small defect in the text at page 27 of " Troylus and Cressida," and a small hole in the margin of page 135 of " Love's Labour Lost." A few lines have been scored in " Henry V." and " Hamlet." Small portions of a few blank margins are wanting Shakespeare (William) Mb. This Copy has the BXTEEMELY EaBB OeIGINAL AND SuPPBBSSED TiTLB added, with the blank space for the portrait, and the imprint '^Printed for Philip Chetwinde, 1663." (See Illustbation.) It measures 13 by 8f inches. A long tear on page 13 has been neatly repaired, and the blank portion of page 275 also repaired, and the border line continued in facsimile, the word " finis," and the ornament at foot of the page miusing. One or two corners have been mended, and three or four margins are slightly torn ; there are also one or two holes. In many cases the wrong pagination has been corrected in manuscript.
