Compiled by EDWIN BURTOP^ Vice-President of the same College. ,^MCjnii. ' Printed by Jennings & Bewley, High Street, Ware. PREFACE. Although this short Catalogue does not include books of unusual rarity or even specimens of the earlier English presses, it is hoped that it may justify its existence by the somewhat special character of the contents. The bibliographical interest lies in the large number of English books printed at foreign presses or secretly in Eng. land. It also includes many works written by Englishmen in Latin and published abroad. Collections of such books are to be found in many Catho- lic Colleges, Monasteries, and Convents, and probably at the country seats of some of the old Catholic families. This par- ticular collection derives a peculiar interest from the history of St. Edmund's College, founded in 1793 to carry on the work of the English Colleges abroad which were suppressed during the French Revolution. Some of the books before us are from Cardinal Allen's great foundation, the English College at Douay, others are from the old Library of the Secular Clergy in London, while others again bear the autographs of various Vicars-Apostolic from Bishop GifFard in the reign of James II to Bishop Griffiths in the nineteenth century. It would be out of place here to enter into the history of the College Library which has undergone many vicissitudes. As at present constituted it consists of two sections known as the Maguire Library and the Ward Library. The Maguire Library was bequeathed to the College in 1865 by Canon Maguire, D.D., Vicar General of Westminster and a former Vice-President. ir Preface. The Ward Library is so called as it includes the private library of Dr. William George Ward. Besides this, however, it holds the large number of volumes that have been given or bequeathed during the past century. Many of these books contain the book-plate of Richard Towneley of Towneley in Lancashire, but there is no record as to how they were ac- quired. The Book-plate consists of the Towneley arms with the inscription " Ex libris Bibliothecae Domesticae Richardi Towneley de Towneley in Agro Lancastrensi Armiger, Anno -i Aetatis 73 ." From the fact that one of the books bears I Domini 1702 the autograph of Bishop James Talbot, who died in 1790 leav- ing his property to the school at Old Hall Green which after his death was reconstituted as St. Edmund's College, it has been conjectured that these books formed part of his estate. Unless otherwise stated, the books catalogued in these pages will be found in the Ward Library. It has not been possi- ble to add shelf-marks, as, owing to the recent bequest of Pro- vost Barry's Library, an entire rearrangement of all the books has been found necessary and a considerable time must elapse before this work is completed. In the following pages mention will be found of three other collections of books now at the College : — I. The Museum which contains many of the earlier or rarer books, as well as those which for some intrinsic reason seem, more in place there than in the Library. II. The Douay Room, an annexe of the Museum which contains relics of the English College at Douay and a col- lection of the works of Douay writers. III. " The Poets' Library," which was formed early in the nineteenth century as a library for the use of elder boys. The Catalogue is chronological in arrangement, but the alphabetical index of Authors will enable any volume to be Preface. v easily found. The index of Printers, Booksellers, and Sta- tioners is similar to that in the British Museum Catalogue of Early English Books to 1640. (1884 edition.) The letters B.M. added to an entry indicate that the same edition is mentioned in the British Museum Catalogue. Books printed in Black letter are distinguished by their title being given in XEU&OC type. In spite of every care it is possible that this Catalogue is not entirely complete. At different times in the past, books have been stowed away in so many holes and corners, that there seems no end to our researches in the lumber-rooms of a hundred years. So many things have been unexpectedly brought to light during the past few years that we have grown expectant of treasure-trove, and we may still hope to find this list of books increased by fresh discoveries and new gifts.
