Charles Fred. Heartman. INTRODUCTION No doubt the New England Primer played a most important part in the early history of the education of the Americans. Notices referring to the Primer in America go back as far as 1691, when an advertisement ap- peared in the pages of Newman's Boston Al- manac. This announcement of Benjamin Harris in Boston speaks of a second impres- sion but not a single copy of this early New England Primer seems to be extant. The first book owned by every American of those days seems not to have been preserved with great care ; although carefully studied it was prob- ably hated just as we hate our school books and throw them away as soon as we have a chance. But what a loss for the careful in- vestigator of the subject; what a regret for the collector. Since Croaker's days we have had the able work of Livermore on the subject. Ford wrote a readable book on the New England Primer, but the real book on the subject, the scientific historical treatise on the New Eng- land Pirimer remains to be written. It can be written now. The material for the future his- torian is already located. He may go after the copies mentioned in the Bibliography which follows these lines and he will find a remarkably complete file, containing the most curious and the most important variations. He will be able at the same time to write a history of early American Education and be able to throw interesting sidelights on the political history of the covered period as well as on the history of early American printing. Livermore, a keen and eager collector, was unable to find a copy printed earlier than 1775. Ford with other discovered material in his hands could go back to the copy in the New York Public Library, dated 1727, which remains the earliest New England Primer known to be extant. When I started this Bib- liography I did not dream of being able to locate about 300 different issues between the years from 1727 to 1830. That I stopped at the latter date needs no explanation for one familiar with the subject. After this date the New England Primer is uninteresting, a re- newal, not the continuation of historical and educational evolution of the subject. About 1,400 libraries received my circular about this Bibliography, inquiring if they had any New England Primers. I went over about 1,200 auction and bookseller's catalogs and, of course, used all the local bibliog- raphies and every other possible reference work. I have endeavored to make this book as complete as possible. Still a few occur- rences make me consider this Bibliography a pioneer work and, therefore, far from com- plete. Our era, with hundreds of keen col- lectors and clever book hunters, no doubt will bring more issues to light. I believe that between the years 1680 and 1830 about six and one-half million Prim- ers were printed, of which about 1,500 are still extant. This leaves many possibilities open. Primers must be found and will be found every year, but that will not change the scientific value of the Primer unless remark- able specimens printed before about 1735 should be discovered. One of the hardest problems for the com- piler to solve was the undated Primer. Paper, type and the printer had to be considered. This problem was found especially difficult because of the catalogs of booksellers and auctioneers. In order to get the best possible prices for these items they put the date back as far as possible. It is remarkable how care- lessly some statements are made, even in im- portant collections. For example, undated Primers by certain printers were attributed to a time in which these printers were not in business. However, the compiler does not claim to be infallible, he is too new in this field and often has had to rely on the ooinion of someone else, especially when the Primer was too far away and it was impossible to see and inspect it personally. Still I feel confi- dent that not too many errors have occurred. Another rather difficult matter was the in- corporation of Primers in the Bibliographv which could not be located but which had bicen mentioned in important auction sales, or bookseller's catalogs or in bibliographies. One of the suggestions which I received was that under no consideration should I include Primers mentioned by Evans and Hildeburn, of which no copy could be located. I decided against all these suggestions backing my opin- ion as follows : If a New England Primer was mentioned in an auction or bookseller's catalog, there was no doubt of a copy being in existence, and hence I saw no reason to ex- clude these Primers. As far as Evans and others are concerned, I might say that I have sold within the last year 117 books not men- tioned by Evans or of which no copy was located (a fact which in no way reflects on the important work of this compiler). If my very small research brought such results, I could not be persuaded to leave out these Primers. I have had to make some distinction, of course, between the Primers located and the ones probably in existence. So I show the latter in smaller type. I hope this arrange- ment will meet finally with approval by friends who were against the incorporation of these Primers. To make the book more useful, especially as far as the undated Primers are concerned there is a special index in which all undated Primers are listed by the printer's name. If I find time next year, I will bring out a bibliographical check list of the non-New England Primers, such as Royal Primers, Franklin Primers, Family Primers, Boston Primers, Massachusetts Primers, etc., printed in America. Anybody who knows of the whereabouts of such primers is, herewith, earnestly requested to communicate with me. I have to acknowledge my great indebted- ness to Mr. Clarence S. Brigham of the American Antiquarian Society and Mr. Al- bert C. Bates from the Connecticut Histori- cal Society who made similar investigations on the subject and turned their material will- ingly over to me. I am also greatly indebted for help, proofreading, etc., to Messrs. G. Plimpton, Wilberforce Eames, George Wat- son Cole, Robert H. Dodd, W. H. Duncan, R. H. Kelby, Frank B. Gay, Charles Evans, Miss Agnes F. Downing, Josephine S. Hey- drick, also The Library of Congress, New York Public Library, Boston Public Library, Pequot Library, Massachusetts Historical So- ciety, Essex Institute, Salem, Woburn Pub- lic Library, Historical Society of Pennsyl- vania, Rhode Island Historical Society, Bos- ton Athenaeum, Milton Public Library, New- buryport Library, Grosvenor Library, Forbes Library, Long Island Historical Society, and many others, who will probably see this book as a work that could not have been completed without the assistance of these men and in- stitutions and their willingness to submit so many insignificant and after all so important little details. Charles Fred Heartman Thanksgiving, 191 5 Since the above was written I have had so many controversies about the undated Primers that I am almost sorry that this book is to go to press. It seems, and I do not hesitate to say this, that the jealousy of some experts makes it impossible to agree on certain matters relating to the New England Primer. Statements in regard to the same title, as furnished by dif- ferent men, differ, and there seems to be no end to the controversies arising from such statements. So far as the undated Primers are concerned, I must leave it to the owners of such Primers to say what should be about the right dates. Another matter in controversy comes from the capital letters used in the title pages. Al- though this may sound odd, it is a fact that there are many dififerences of opinion regard- ing what and where capital letters should be shown as appearing in title pages. The re- sult has been that certain parts of this book have been reset three times without giving satisfaction to some of the librarians inter- ested, or to me. The result of this will be that some day someone will claim that he has found a different issue than here listed, be- cause he thinks some initial letter of some word in some title should have been a capital letter, while someone else thinks that initial should be a lower case letter. As I have been unable to see some of the Primers, and as the owners of these Primers have not liked my ruling in this matter, there was nothing that could be done. To set out the disputed points as clearly as possible ac- counts for the large number of illustrations of title pages shown in this bibliography. If it had not been necessary to seriously con- sider the costs of this book I would have re- produced with cuts the title pages of every Primer listed and in existence. I appreciate more and more how incom- plete this book leaves the subject, and I feel like apologizing that this work must go out really unfinished. The Compiler ABBREVIATIONS A.A.S..
