Hawkins may be considered the Dean of American Book Collectors. Born in 1831, he made his first appearance in a New York book-auction room in 1852, and from that day became an enthusiastic but discriminating col- lector of books. In his youth a soldier in the United States Army in Mexico, later a General in the Civil War, Officier de la Legion d'Honneur and a busy man of affairs, he has yet found time to make several notable collections of rare books and to add materially to the lore of early printing and engraving. The highly interesting story of his thirty years' quest for the rare products of the early presses cannot be told here. It was conducted less through the usual trade channels of collecting than by individual researches in widely separated fields in towns and cities, in monasteries and libraries, in book shops and private homes in both the Old and New Worlds. His competition through the agency of Mr. F. S. Ellis with Mr. Bernard Quaritch at the Syston Park sale for the Gutenberg Bible and the Psalter of 1459 will long be remembered, re- sulting as it did in the then unprecedented price of ^^3,900 for the Bible and ^^4,950 for the Psalter, and making a new starting-point in the buying and selling of Incunabula. Now, after fifty years of collecting and winnowing, in his 75th year, as erect in bearing as when the writer first saw him at the head of his brigade on a Virginia battlefield, and with undiminished enjoyment of his treasures, he is devoting his time to their proper and permanent disposition. His valuable collection of books relating to the War of the Rebellion, numbering over 2,000 volumes, has been presented bv General Hawkins to the University of Vermont, his native State, where it has a special room and is known as the " Hawkins War Collection." A collection of 550 volumes of rare incunabula, illustrating the early history of Wood Engraving and covering the first half century of printing, will be deposited in a specially con- structed building now in course of erection in Providence, Rhode Island, where it will be shown under glass as an Exhi- bition Collection. This building and collection, with many rare paintings and engravings by the old masters, will be presented to, the City of Providence as a memorial to the memory of Mrs. Hawkins. The collection now offered at public sale is a selection from the books retained by General Hawkins in his private library. In the following pages they are fully and carefully described, and only the briefest reference to the more important items need be made here. Of " Incunabula " may be mentioned the first book printed at Nimwegen, Holland (1479), the first printed at Casel di San Vaso, Italy (1481), the first printed at Novi, Italy (1484), and the first printed at Dijon, France (1481). There are fourteen editions of Ptolemy's Geography, all printed in the i6th Century, including the Venice edition of 151 1, which contains the first printed delineations of any por- tion of the North American continent, and the Solinus edition printed at Vienna in 1520, with its famous map bearing the name of America. There arte eight important Mexican books of the i6th Cen- tury, including the excessively rare First American Collection of Laws for the Indes (1563), and the only known copy of " De Constructione Octo Partium Ovationis," by Father Alvarez, Mexico, 1570. Among other items of interest to collectors are an almost complete set of Grolier Club Publications in fine condition, some Franklin imprints and some interesting old bindings. For other and fuller details the reader is referred to the fol- lowing pages. General Hawkins wishes that these books may find new and appropriate ownership, and thus confer upon others con- tinued dividends of scholarly enjoyment; and he believes that the wide publicity of a competitive sale will best accom- plish this result. Hawkins, pasted inside, says: "This is a copy of one of the best known of Zeiner's early Augsburg issues. Its subject-matter is of considerable interest, but its single woodcut, a most characteristic specimen of the early Augsburg school of wood- cutting, stands for its greatest value. The rude work of those old artists is more appreciated to-day than ever before." Extremely rare, especially in such fine condition. A copy, not as good as this, sold at Sotheby's for £18. 129. But according to La Serna Santander (I, p 396), Panzer, Falken- stein and others the first book printed in that town should not be older than the year 1481 {Oindii Epistolae Heroides). HAWKINS 21 9119; Holtrop, Mon. Typ. 87 (117) ai, a; Brunei, II, 440. An auto- graph note inserted, by Genl. Hawkins, says: " Campbell mentions this as the second book issued from the press of Gerard Leempt, the first printer at Nimwegen, before the end of the fifteenth century. In my work I followed him because he cites for the first another book by the same author with the date of August 23, 14.79. — According to my general theory, this is entitled to the first place being of the same year, but without the day of the month. This is the only fifteenth century book of that place I have ever known to be offered for sale. Copies are very rare and I have seen but two others: that of the Royal Library at the Hague and my second copy." Very fine and perfect copy from Pinelli's Library (no. 1036), and from Woodhull's Library, with Woodhull's autograph note on the second fly-leaf. See facsimile. 132. JACOBUS DE CLUSA. This book is very important for the references to the invention of printing, which will be found under the year 1457: " How much students, of literature owe to the Germans cannot be adequately expressed by any form of speech. For the method of print- ing books was discovered by John Gutenberg Zuninngen knight of Mainz on the Rhine and quickly propagated in almost every part of the world." This edition of Eusebius' Chronicon, continued by Mattheus Palraerius, is one of the most remarkable productions of Ratdolt's Press, and it is very rare, especially so complete and in such fine condition. Sabellico never gives dates, but in describing the prosperous condition of Venice at the accession of Pasqual Malipiero (elected Doge in 1457, died 1462), he proceeds to say: "Ad hanc et alias illius principatus fcelicitates accessit quod Librorura Imprimendorum ratio turn primum est in Italia reperta ; Commentum ipsum Germani hominis creditur sed quum tota Italia, procedente tempore, divini operis olficinae constitutae sint, sitque aperta aemulatione inter opifices diligentia et ingenio certatum, Nicolaus Jenson quem Veneta civitas sortita est omnes alios in eo genere laudis post se procul reliquit." The next sentence tells of the death of Malipiero; consequently it must have been Sabellico's belief that this invention of a German was introduced in Italy before 1462. A very fine copy on LARGE PAPER, perhaps UNIQUE in such condition, ruled with red ink, and with large initials painted in red. The magnificent binding of this book is a perfect facsimile of the one which covered the copy offered to Cardinal Giovanni de' Medici, after- wards Pope Leo X., one of the most beautiful masterpieces of the art of Bookbinding in Venice at the end of the XVth century. According to Hain this book should have 240 leaves, for the copy he collated had an addition of two leaves printed in gothic, which do not belong to the book. But according to Ebert, Brunet and other authorities in the bibliographical field, it is complete with 238 leaves. Such another copy as the present will not again be offered for sale. 139. They were printed in the College of the Jesuits and were used as school texts for the pupils of the same college, as we can learn from the licences of both the Governor and Archbishop of Mexico printed at the beginning of the first volume. These two documents are also very interesting for the history of printing in the city of Mexico, for they mention several other school books which were very likely printed in the same year than the present two volumes; only five or six of the mentioned volumes are now known. 170. This small school book, a latin grammar for the beginners, written in the manner of the Donatuses, by father Manuel Alvarez, is supposed to be UNIQUE. It was found by Dr. Nicholas Leon, founder of the Michoacan Museum, . and was described by him for the first time under the title : " Un impreso mexicano del siglo XVI." This book was formerly unknown to Icazbalceta, who took the descrip- tion from Dr. Leon, when his book was already printed. This is Dr. Leon's copy, which Is believed by him incomplete, be- cause It "does not bear any of those final subscriptions, vfhich were so common In that time." This edition Is mentioned in the licences of the Introductio in Dialecticam Aristotelis, Mexico, 1578, described above, as el libra cuarto y quinto del padre Alvarez. " Destinado este impreso a las destructoras manos de los estudlantes, es de crerse a penas haya escapado este ejemplar y quiza incompleto." See the note by Dr. Leon, of which only 50 copies were printed. Inserted in the book. Father Manuel Alvarez was born in the island of Madeira in 1526, and entered the Company of the Jesuits, when twenty years old (1546). He wrote several works for the use of the schools, of which the most used was the Latin grammar. He died in 1582. 30 LIBRARY OF 171. MONTAGU (MRS.). The 28 maps comprise one of the world, 10 of Europe, 4 of Africa, 12 of Asia, and one mod- ern map of the world. The ancient (Ptolomaean) maps are arranged in the same order as those in the preceding editions of the translation of Jacobus Angelus, but were largely altered and improved. The new general map at the end (see facsimile), drawn on the heart- shaped projection, is not found in all copies. It was printed on a separate sheet, and apparently added after the book had been com- pleted. It contains THE FIRST PRINTED DELINEATION OF ANY PORTION OF THE NORTH AMERICAN CONTINENT, under the names of regalis domus {i. e., Cortereal?) and terra labora- torum," the former as a fragmentary coast line and the latter as a 33 LIBRARY OF PTOLEMY large island. Below these are ispaniarum insu., terra cubae, and a part of the southern continent with the inscription Terra sanctae cruets. Greenland {engronelant) is put down as a part of northern Europe. Harrisse, B. A. V., no. 68. Extremely rare. Fine and large copy. Murphy's copy fetched $95.00. 183. Clavdii Ptolemaei Alexandrini Geographicae Enarrationis Libri Octo. Lvgdvni Ex Officina Mel- chioris et Gasparis Trechsel Fratrum. M. D. XXXV. With woodcut diagrams, woodcut ornamental initials and borders by Holbein and Graf, and 50 woodcut maps. Folio, old calf (rubbed). Lugduni, 1535 * This edition was edited by Michel Servet (Michael Villano'vanus), and has the same maps as those in the edition of 1525, having been reprinted from the same blocks and arranged and numbered in the same order. Four of the maps relate to America: no. 28. Oceani Occidentalis seu Terrae Novae Tabula; no. 24. Norbegia et Gothia; no. 49. Tabu. Nova Orbis, with the inscription Differt situs orhis Hy- drographorum ab eo quern Ptolomeus posuit; and no. 50. Tabula totius orbis, or Orbis Typus Universalis iuxta Hydrographorum Tra- ditionem exactissime depicta 1522. L. F., bearing the name AMERICA. On the back of map 28 there is an interesting account of Columbus and discovery of America, which ends: Toto itague, quod aiunt, aber- rant coelo qui hanc continentam Americam nuncupari contendunt, cum Americus multo post Columbum eandem terram adierit, nee cum Hispanis ille, sed cum Portugallensibus, ut suos merces commutaret, eo se contulit. This rare edition is not only remarkable on account of its maps of great American interest, but also because it was one of the prin- cipal pieces of evidence against Servet. In the text on the back of map 41 (Palestine) it is said that "Only by falsehood or mere boast- ing, has such excellence been ascribed to this land by the Bible and by Josephus, since experience shows it to be uncultivated, sterile, and lacking in all sweetness." In vain did Servet protest that these words had appeared in the edition of 1525, ten years before his own reprint was published: he was burnt by Calvin's friends for his impiety. Harrisse, B. A. V., no. 210. Some pages slightly wormed, otherwise a fine copy. Murphy's copy fetched $90.00. 184. Venetia, per Gioan Baptista Pedrezano, 1548 *The first Edition of Ptolemy's Geography in Italian. The trans- lation was madf by Pietro Andrea Mattioli, a learned physician of Siena, and the maps were designed and added by lacopo Gastaldo. This is one of the indispensable editions of Ptolemy, representing in its maps a great advance upon all anterior efforts to illustrate the best geographical knowledge of the time. Gastaldo may be said to have created a new era, by his addition of five special maps of America to the two world-maps which he designed for this edition. It was the first time that anything of the kind had been done; all preceding editions having confined themselves to a single general map so far as the new world was concerned. Maps 54-58 relate to America, and are accompanied by descriptions on the backs. They include South America, New Spain, North America (Canada and Newfoundland, etc.), Cuba, Hispaniola. No. 59, Vni
