D. White, D.D. Marsh's Librarian PRINTED FOR THE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY AT THE OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS September 1905 /\ . xo-0 I *& 7 .L GENERAL PREFACE As steps towards a complete catalogue of all the English' books printed up to the end of the year 1640, it is very desirable that lists of the books of this class preserved in College and Cathedral libraries, and other similar collections, should be compiled and printed. Ex- perience has shown that almost every old library contains books or editions not yet registered in bibliographies or in the catalogues of the larger public libraries. Even when numerous other copies are known, those preserved in a particular library may be of special interest from their bindings or manuscript notes, or from the owners to whom they have belonged. The present series is an attempt on the part of the Bibliographical Society to encourage the publication of such lists by contributing, so far as its means permit, to the cost of paper and print, and by bringing the lists when printed under the notice of a very large proportion of the students most likely to be interested in them. Without a quite disproportionate expenditure on advertisements it is very difficult for books of this class to find purchasers, and librarians and library-authorities > The word ' English ' here includes all books in the English language wherever printed, and all books printed in England, in whatever language. vi GENERAL PREFACE have perhaps been even more discouraged from publishing by this fact than by the trouble and expense of the work itself. Although the portion of its funds which the Biblio- graphical Society can devote to contributing towards the expense of paper and print will necessarily be small, it is nevertheless hoped that the certainty which it thus offers that the catalogues will be circulated and preserved, as part of the Society's publications, will cause some to be compiled which would otherwise have been unattempted. It is hoped, moreover, that while each catalogue must be to some extent a compromise between the wishes of the Society and those of the individual compiler, sufficient uniformity may be preserved in plan, as well as in size and form, to enable the contents of the different lists to be easily compared, when the time comes for examining what contribution each can make towards a general catalogue of early English printed books. ALFRED W. POLLARD, Hon. Sec. ARCHBISHOP MARSH'S LIBRARY The fabric of Marsh's Library abuts on the east side of the burying ground of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. It was erected between 1694 and 1703, on ground belonging to the ancient archiepiscopal palace of St. Sepulchre's, by Narcissus Marsh, who was translated from Dublin to Armagh in the latter year ; from this circumstance it has been often spoken of as the Library of St. Sepulchre's. In 1707 an Act of Parliament was passed for 'settling and preserving a Publick Library for ever in the House for that purpose built by' Marsh. It is commonly said that the nucleus of the library was 'that very valuable Collection of choice and excellent Books/ 9,513 in number, 'besides many pamphlets,' which had been purchased for £21,^00 in 1704 by Marsh from the executors of Stillingfleet, Bishop of Worcester ; but it is natural to suppose that Marsh's own collection (which included many belonging to Michael Jephson, a former Dean of St. Patrick's) had never left the building, and it is certain that the books of Elie Bouhdreau, the first library-keeper, had been there from the first, filie Bouh6reau was a very learned physician, who fled to England from La Rochelle after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes. Archbishop Marsh took him under his protection. Bouhdreau took Holy Orders, and ' in consideration of his being made keeper of the said library . . . lodged ... in the said house ' the books which he had brought from France, about a,aoo in number. Many of these had originally belonged to Tanaquil Faber, or Tanneguy le F^vre, father of the celebrated classical scholar Madame Dacier. To the collections of Marsh, Bouhdreau, and Stillingfleet there were added in 1745 about 3,000 volumes, the vni ARCHBISHOP MARSH'S LIBRARY bequest of John Stearne, Bishop of Clogher, and since then the library has been enriched by donations and purchase, as far as the very scanty endowment will permit, and at present it contains nearly aa.ooo volumes of printed books, and over 300 volumes of MSS. For about 150 years Marsh's Library was the only really public library in Dublin. It has consequently suffered much from the depredations of book stealers; in fact up to 1838 1,200 volumes had been lost, many of them books of great rarity. Speaking generally, StilHngfleet's books are in the cases A, B i, B 3 — Q ; those of Bouh^reau in room R ; Marsh's books (he left his MSS. to the Bodleian) in the cases A 3, B 3, &c. ; and Stearne's in A 4, B 4, &c. Fuller accounts of Marsh's Library will be found in Some Worthies of the Irish Church, by G. T. Stokes, D.D., London, Hodder & Stoughton, 1900 (a posthumous work), and in an article in The Library Association Record, March, 1899, by the present Librarian, Newport J. D. White, D.D.
