I Z 696.D51 Cornell university Library for decimal class"' §>tatc College of gfgricuUure at Cornell iHnibcrsiitp Utiiaca, M. S- Itifirarp + _n_ EDITOR'S NOTE ON AGRICULTURE SCHEME FOR DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION In developing 630, Agricultvire, 2 important schemes, both based on the Decimal classification, claimed careful consideration: that of Nebraska university (1899) by J I Wyer, and that of the Classification dicimale (1904) by the Institut International de Bibliographie of Brussels (see D C Introduction p. 41-42). Presumption was in favor of the Nebraska scheme, because of its already large American use. The object of the Nebraska scheme was strictly practical; i. e. to pro- vide short numbers for all important agricultural topics. This naturally resulted in using the short numbers first and accorded with the D C principle not to let a theoretic refinement stand in the way of a greater practical good. But the rapid introduction in agriculture of new products and methods proves the practical need of a scheme so bilt that it may expand logically wherever pressure is felt, or with successiv accretions it must degenerate into a mere mob of topics. The expediency principle of the Nebraska scheme has resulted in limitations that baffle efforts to fit into it satisfactorily the multifarious products and topics that have come into prominence since it was made. Besides this difficulty, the Nebraska scheme changes the establisht meaning of a few D C numbers with many consequent disadvantages and apparently without a compen- sating gain. The French scheme swings as far to the other extreme, and for the sake of adhering to numeric logic bilds needlessly long numbers for subjects on which there is much i laterial. As it has already been applied to much material and has been idopted by the Agricultural institute of Rome, Italy, its authors begd that we should not reject it except for most con- clusiv reasons. It has therefore had most conscientious consideration. The classification herewith submitted aims to incorporate all the new topics of these 2 schemes, with many from other sources, so distributed as to allow later insertions in their % roper relatioix. .0 existing heads while avoiding the long niimbers resulting from too close adherence to theory. Numbers are provided for many minor topics met in researches for this expansion, even tho there is as yet little material on them, while there are conspicuous gaps where no classification satisfactory enuf to submit has yet been evolvd; notably 634.9 Forestry. The fullest and frankest criticism is urged in the hope of eliminating as many faults and making as many improvements as possible before publication in the loth edition of the D C, which must be printed this fall because of exhaustion of the 9th.
