It does not pay to install cheap plumbing, because there is no one feature in the construction of a house that will be as unsatisfactory — both as to the fixtures and the workmanship. On the other hand, there is nothing which will appeal so strongly to the fastidious and careful housewife, and be so great a source of enjoyment, as modern high-grade plumbing. Many families pay out j^early for doctor bills, for sickness caused by deadly sewer gases due to poor plumbing, more than the difference between the cost of the cheapest and the best work. You cannot have too many safeguards for tlie health of your family and yourself. It is well to keep in mind, when arranging the sanitary equipment of your home, the fact that your family may be required to occupy the house for a long period (without new plumbing being installed), therefore, the slight extra cost of the best plumbing will, in reality, be health assurance, as well as a saving in repair bills. Our desire to increase the efficiency of our catalogues caused us to illustrate all bathrooms in this book in colors. In previous additions of "Modern Bathrooms" we suggested color schemes, but in going a step further and actually showing color treatments we believe that we have rendered the building public a very valuable service. When further information than this booklet contains is desired, we request that our 676 page general catalogue " P" be consulted. Practically every legitimate plumber, architect and wholesale dealer in plumber's supplies has a copy of our general catalogue and will gladly show it. We will be pleased to learn the name of any plumber or architect w ho does not possess a copy. The prices printed in our catalogues, booklets and advertisements do not include freight charges to all points. It should, therefore, he kept in mind, especially by purchasers in the far West, and the extreme South, that our prices are compiled with our factories as their basis. SANTIAGO (CHILI) MONTEVIDEO AUCKLAND, SHANGHAL BRUSSELS MONTEVIDEO. / HISTORICAL THE first "c^tandard" Porcelain Enameled Bath was made in 1875, in the River A\'enue plant of the Standard Manufacturing Company, Allegheny, now a part of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The capital of the company was $75,000; number of employees, 100; and daily factory capacity, two baths. The public's appre- ciation of sanitation was not then awakened nor developed, and the production of two baths per day was considered remarkable. The first attempts to apply an enamel coating to an iron body were found to be extremely difficult and costly. However, the difficulties were thought to be possible of solution, and the "Standard" product of to-day is ample proof of this. What has been accomplished has been the result of long and diligent labor, researcli and study, and the expenditure of large sums of money. From a small organization our company has grown to the largest in the w orld in its line, and our product has been, for many years, sold in every part of the civilized world. The present company was incorporated in 1900 with a capital of 55,000,000, which has since been increased to :p7,500,000. The number of employees is over 5500, and the combined daily capacity of our factories is 2000 bath tubs, 2000 lavatories, 2000 sinks, in addition to a large output t)f miscellaneous fixtures, plumber's brass and wood work. 'I'he number of salesmen employed is over 100, and 20 branch stores, showrooms, warehouses and offices and agencies in many foreign cities are maintained in order to insure prompt and thorough tlistribution. 71ie original "c$1;andard" plant of I S75 occupied two-thirds of an acre of grountl, with buildings containing 60,000 square feet of fioor space. To-da\ , our factories cover over forty-se\'en acres with buikhngs basing 2,200,000 square feet of floor space. The tile is .? x b-inch dull glaze or matte finish — of medium dark buff color. The floor is of ceramic unglazed tile. The bath and shower pipes and fittings are concealed. It is cus- tomary to arrange for a closet space or a panel in the wall immediately back of the bath, so that the fittintrs can be reached without disturbing the tiling. Floor Plan- Design P 95 20 SXattdari* DECORATIONS AND EXTERIOR FINISHES WHILE the first requisites of the hathroom are healthfuhiess and comfort, there is excellent opportunity for beauty and harmony in decorative effects. The best effects are obtained by the use of a simple, subdued treatment applied to the exterior of the bath and other fixtures to which a decoration is applicable. The same treatment should be carried throughout the room, and if the treatment be wisely chosen and well applied, the result will be so highly pleasing as to add greatly to the value and charm of the room. The exteriors of all Baths, Receptors, Sitz and Foot Baths, unless otherwise specified, are painted with one coat of paint only. The process of exterior finishing is of such a nature that it can only be done at the factory, inasmuch as the casting must be dressed perfectly smooth— a character of ^\ork which requires special skill and facilities. Every bath decorated by us receives from six to sixteen coats of best enamel paint on the exterior, each coat being baked on in a drying oven at a temperature of 150 degrees Fahrenheit, and is then rubbed down with pumice and rotten stone before the succeeding coats are applied. The number of coats varies from twelve to sixteen for the No. 1 finish, and from six to ten for the No. 2 finish. When the exterior has been finished, gold lines or harmonious and artistic border decorations can be added. Our facilities for executing this branch of work are unsurpassed, and we have in our employ a corps of artists skilled in designing and executing artistic decorative effects. Gold bands or lines can be put on either No. 1 or No. 2 finish. Borders can only be furnished on No. 1 finish. The No. 1 Zinc White finish will be furnished on all orders for exterior finish, unless otherwise specified, but Ivory can also be furnished if desired.
