Y., in the ■»• ^ year 1833. Brought up as a farmer's boy to labor in the fields during the summer, he eagerly seized in winter, his only time for study, the opportunity to acquire that solidity of learning which in after life was to place him in mental equipment above the majority of his contemporaries. Added to frugal habits, a steady purpose, he was enabled to save enough money to acquire a brief academic preparation. Choosing the law for his future vocation, he began its study and was soon admitted to the Bar. He first practiced at Cherry Valley, Oneonta, and the region thereabouts, but finding the narrowness of a country profession not sufficient for his grow- ing reputation, he came to Alban)', which ever after remained his home. Here it was that he built up a practice second to none in the reward of money and fame. His success lay in his industry and perseverance; he loved work, and he did that work thoroughly and honestly, as his success at the Bar and the multiplicity of his clients amply showed. It is not claimed for Nathaniel C. Moak that he was a great lawyer save in completeness of purpose and fidelity to the smallest means to accomplish the greatest ends. He was the master of any case he tried, and his adversary found 'in him one who appHed the principles _Qf _ common sense as a necessary adjunct of the principles of law. Shams of all kinds he hated ; solid in his physical organization he would have all things so. Never a brilliant man, and he never desired to be so regarded, he was able to bring to bear upon every action of life that solid learning and the application of it to the necessity of life, which in the long run is more effective than the meteoric flights of the brilliant. He began early in life to gather books, and year after .year his library was increased by judicious selec- tions till in the end his library became second to none in Albany. Mr. Moak used his books; none were acquired for mere orna- ment; the seeker after rare editions and unique copies will not find them here, he bought that which quickly and thoroughly served a purpose. Too much attention cannot be given to the character of the books acquired by Mr. ]\Ioak, here are thousands of volumes in every department of literature, all chosen with a distinct purpose, and which served their late owner's purpose faithfully and well. An attentive reader and a hard student, his mass of information was ever at the command of one who honestly sought, but for the sham lovers of learning he had no patience and to these his manner was often abrupt and almost harsh. That he loved his books is evinced by their superb con- dition; with few exceptions all are clothed in fine morocco or calf bindings, the workmanship of the best London and American craftsmen. The editions are of the best, and the wonder is that such a busy man should have found the leisure to gather about him such a notable collection of books, each showing care in its selection and a purpose in its acquisition. No range of thought is here left unprovided, Art, Poetry, History, Science, and the Drama are here ready for the scholar's hand. Though soon to be dispersed at the drop of the auctioneer's hammer, it is sincerely hoped that these beautiful books, selected with so much care and forethought, will again be a source of enjoy- ment to those who will give them the same loving care bestowed upon them by their late owner. Men, and especially professional men, are prone to join clubs, etc. Mr. Moak's love for his books is evinced by the fact that he affiliated with one club and that the Grolier of New York; he had time for no other.
