We were led to present this work to the public from an article which appeared in the New Yoi'k Daily Register, of Oct. 3d, 1874, calling attention to the fact of the large number of authors, who are now practicing law at the bar in New York City, or are now on the bench, the entire number being over sixty in all. We now give the names of all these authors, and the titles of the law books they have written or edited, and when published. We do not include any name unless he has written or edited a Law Book; a writer of only a pamphlet, is not included in this catalogue, neither are the books he may have written on any subject not con- nected with the law. Among these names which we give, will be found seven Judges, Blatchford, C. P. Daly, Dwight, Lawrence, Monell, McAdam, and Shea, who are now on the bench ; and Introduction. nine ex-Judges, Bosworth, Gierke, Davies, Hilton, Hoffman, Jones, Smith, Spencer, and ex-Surrogate Tucker. In the article above referred to, the Register says : " It will be acknowledged that among the names mentioned there are many who stand in the front ranks of the profes- sion, on the bench and at the bar, while they are all recognized as useful and worthy members of the community, and an honor to the profession. There is probably no bar in any city that can boast of so large a proportionate number of living authors, as that of New York City." J. R. McD. N. Y., Nov. 25th, 1874.
