Several days before the attack, the patient generally has a sense of general weakness and debility, with headache, dizziness and soreness of the limbs, accompanied some- times with bleeding from the nose. The attack itself begins almost always with a more or less violent chill, or repeated chilly sensations, but sometimes possibly without a chill. The chill is followed by heat, with a regular, quite characteristic, typical rise and fall every day for three or four days, rising from morning till evening, and falling from evening till next morning, so that on the third or fourth evening a temperature of 104° F. is reached or a little exceeded. The formula of this ascent is nearly as follows : First day morning 98.6° F. evening 101.8° F. Second day " 100.21° F. " 102.66° F. Third day « 101.66° F. " 103.64" F. Fourth day " 102.56° F. " 104.54° F. This is the general rule. Meanwhile, exceptions must not be overlooked. The rise may be completed in two days, or protracted to five. These symptoms will be sufficient. Treatment. Give an injection of I oz. of Electrozone to 3 oz. hot water after each passage. Also administer internally i oz. Meditrina diluted with 3 oz. water, to be taken in small doses, at frequent intervals, so that this quantity of Medi- trina and water will be wholly taken each day. CHOLERA. Symptoms. Cholera exhibits the following symptoms, being pre- ceded in most cases by profuse diarrheal stools, so that the bowels are quickly emptied of their contents. The dis- charges change to a rice-water like fluid, and are accom- panied by profound prostration. Upon drinking, vom- iting follows; first the contents of the stomach, and afterwards a mere watery substance, slightly tinged yellow. 30 FOR r u The weakness of the patient increases rapidly, and his voice becomes husky. Discharges takes place involun- tarily, and secretion of urine ceases. The insatiable thirst is accompanied with great anguish and oppression in the chest and in the pit of the stomach, and the most painful cramps of the legs and bowels. The aspect of the patient *vz:£: Fig. 8. —Comma bacillus in Cholera dejecta, magnified 600 diameters. has by this time changed fearfully. The eyes have sunken into their orbits, and the nose becomes pointed and cheeks fallen in. A little headache is experienced, but frequently the patient complains of darkness before the eyes, and roar- ing in the ears and vertigo. All this may take place in a few hours and result fatally. Treatment. Give an injection of I oz. Electrozone to 3 oz. warm water after each passage ; also administer internally i oz. of Meditrina diluted with 3 oz. water, to be taken in small doses at frequent intervals so that this quantity of Medi- trina and water will be wholly taken each day. YELLOW FEVER. Treatment, same as for cholera. DIPHTHERIA. The diagnosis of diphtheria is ordinarily not difficult, especially in epidemics. 31 FOR r u Symptoms. In its mild form it is liable to be mistaken for catarrhal affections. The severer forms can hardly be confounded with other diseases. Simple Croup causes no affections of the glands and kidneys. In its mild forms, diphtheria usually commences with fever and soreness in the throat. The temperature may rise from ioi° to 105" F. in the first days. From the fourth to the sixth day the Fig. 9. — Bacillus diphtheriEe, magnified i,aoo diameters. temperature gradually declines. The fauces appear at first only inflamed, but show in a short time the character- istic gray or ash gray patches, first on one tonsil, then on the other, extending also in some cases upon the contig- uous portions at the back of the roof of the mouth. With this we find the lymphatic glands of thejaw regularly some- what swollen, a distinctive feature of diphtheria from a 32 FOR YOU mere catarrhal inflammation of the throat. The fever is in most instances attended with more or less languor and debility from the outset, with headache and pain in the back. The disease may not reach a higher degree but terminate in from five to fourteen days in recovery; but there may take place from about the fourth to the sixth day, a sudden rise of the fever with a rapid spread of false membrane, when the disease has assumed one of its severer forms. The period of incubation occupies from two to four or five days. ■ Treatment. The nose and throat must be liberally sprayed every half hour with a mixture of i oz. Meditrina diluted with 3 oz. water. Patient should also gargle with same mixture. Take internally mixture of i oz. Meditrina diluted with 3 oz. water ; to be sipped in small doses from a bottle, say about every 20 minutes, swallowed slowly ; the 4 oz. solu- tion to be wholly taken each day. Patient to be kept out of drafts. Diet to be regulated, and should be stimulating and nourishing, preferably milk and brandy. LA GRIPPE. Symptoms. Grippe is an epidemic disease characterized by a series of catarrhal manifestations, attacking the respiratory and generally also the digestive organs, and is attended by great and rapidly developed weakness, pains in the limbs, severe headache, serious nervous symptoms, and more or less fever. It attacks all persons without distinction of age, sex or occupation. Atmospheric conditions and local cir- cumstances, such as elevations, conditions of soil, etc., are not known to exercise any particular influence upon its spread. In short, the exciting causes are not positively known. Even its contagiousness is a question of doubt. It spreads rapidly in its local diffusion. Its diff^erence from a common epidemic of catarrh lies in its marked march of progression, and its independence of weather and seasons, while from a commencing, as in typhoid fever,it 33 FOR YOU differs from typhoid by its persistent elevation of tempera- ture. It is not a very fatal disease, but as it modifies and complicates all other existing diseases, it is especially hard on the weak and also on the aged. It frequently leaves the system in a weakened condition, favorable to the propagation of the germs of other diseases, so that it is not rare to find patients convalescing from la grippe exhibiting symptoms of other diseases. Fig. io. — Bacillus of Influenza, magnified i,ooo diameters. Great care should be taken when the patient is recov- ering to keep the surroundings in a sanitary condition, and the patient under watchful eye, until complete recovery is assured. Treatment. Spray nose and throat liberally every two or three hours with a mixture of I part Meditrina and 4 parts water. Also gargle the throat with same mixture. If the eyes are inflamed or a discharging condition exists, bathe liberally with mixture consisting of i part Meditrina and 15 parts hot water. Take Meditrina internally as follows: Make a mixture of i oz. Meditrina diluted with 3 oz. of water, using a 4 oz. bottle for the purpose. This am.ount 34 FOR r u to be taken every day, in sips of about 30 or 40 drops, at frequent intervals. This remedy, taken at first signs of La Grippe, will check the disease at once and effect an immediate and certain cure. All inflammations of nose, throat and air passages should be treated in this manner, thus guarding against development of more serious com- plications. Avoid night air and be regular in the matter of diet and defecation, and if day is dark or cloudy, remain at home. Avoid all drafts and retire early. Fig. II. — Bacterium Pneu- moniae magnified 1,500 diam- eters. Fig. 12.- -Acute Catarrhal Pneumonia magnified 500 diameters. HAY FEVER. Treatment should be begun six to eight weeks before the disease makes its annual appearance. One oz. of Medi- trina, diluted with 3 oz. of water, should be taken in sips, at frequent intervals during the day, so that the 4 oz. solu- tion be taken each day. Use a 4-6Z. bottle for the purpose. Bowels should be kept regular. Before the attack comes on take one teaspoonful of 35 FOR r u sulphur, made into a thick paste with molasses, to which add one-fourth teaspoonful of cream of tartar (which will act as a blood purifier, etc.) This should be taken each morning before eating, for ten days, commencing with the use of Meditrina. If this should cause the bowels to move too freely, or be attended with griping pains, the sulphur should be reduced to a half teaspoonful. Drafts of all kinds should be avoided while taking the sulphur, as the tendency of the sulphur is to open the pores of the skin and to render the patient liable to take cold. In your case, should the fever make its appearance, it will be in a mild form, and the use of Meditrina, as first above prescribed, should be continued. Should the eyes become inflamed, softly wash them with a solution of I part of Electrozone to 15 parts of water, permitting the solution to come in contact with the eye ; the inflammation will subside. Should the nose discharge or the throat become sore, then, in addition, the nose and throat should be liberally sprayed with i part Meditrina diluted with 4 parts of water, inhaling or drawing in the breath while spraying the throat. This should be done on arising in the morning and before retiring at night. Where the disease has been severe for several years, it is desirable to spray the nose and throat in the morning and at night for one month previous to the time of its expected appearance, thus guarding against the propagation of the germ in the air passages of nose and throat. CROUP. Symptoms. Its early signs consist at times of peevishness, feverish- ness, soreness of the throat, inflammation of the tonsils with patches of exudations. In many cases there are no such forebodings. The child is aroused suddenly out of a sound sleep, generally about midnight, by a hoarse, dry, croupy cough. It exhibits restlessness and fright and fre- quently puts its hands to the windpipe. Soon, however, 36 FOR r u it falls asleep again to be later aroused by the same dry, hoarse cough alternating in this way until morning, when usually a reaction takes -place, and the child seems to be lively and playful. When evening approaches, the child becomes worse again, and in addition to the cough we observe the breathing between the coughing spells to be impeded. See treatment on following page. WHOOPING COUGH. Symptoms. In the beginning the whooping-cough cannot be dis- tinguished from an ordinary bronchial catarrh. Later, however, the fits of coughing assume the characteristic whoop, which consists in a long crowing inspiration on account of a spasmodic closing of the glottis, which is followed by several short expirations in quick succession, ending almost frequently with vomiting large masses of tough gelatinous phlegm from the bronchi. Such par- oxysms come as often as the collection of phlegm is sufficiently abundant to excite them. The child feels their coming and dreads them, therefore it almost always strives to get hold of something whereby to support itself; The popular belief in regard to whooping-cough is that it is six weeks coming, six weeks standing and six weeks going, but, like many popular beliefs, it should be taken with some discrimination, for though obstinate cases last a long while, under proper care and treatrtlent the child should not be troubled with this ailment for such a length of time. Whooping-cough is not infrequently com- plicated with measles and scarlatina, and in these complica- tions lies the danger. Ordinarily simple cases pass without much difficulty, and even without fever. Whooping-cough prevails mostly epidemically among children up to eight years of age, although cases do happen after that and even in advanced years. 37 FOR r u Treatment. ASTHMA, CROUP, WHOOPING COUGH, QUINSY AND MOUTH AND THROAT AND LUNG DISEASES. Spray with " atomizer " having . no metal parts with which the liquid comes in contact. Use a solution of i part Meditrina and 3 or 4 parts water at least three times a day ; every hour or two would produce better results. The affected parts should be kept under the influence of the preparation at least iive minutes each time. When the throat is inflamed beyond the parts where the spray will reach, inhale or draw in the breath while spraying. Beside spraying, gargle, and rinse the mouth with same mixture. This treatment will be found efficacious in Tonsilitis, Glossitis, Sores or Ulcers in the Mouth or Throat. If any of these diseases have become chronic or seem stubborn, and do not yield to this treatment promptly, then, in addition, take a sip every 10 or 15 minutes of a mixture of I oz. Meditrina and 3 oz. of water, so that between arising in the morning and bed time the whole 4 oz. shall be used. Do not swallow this quickly, but let it run down the throat slowly. Mixture must be made fresh every day. 38 I At,,:- ■\N Figl FlgZ ;/ y i J Figs '^^ Fl4 6 r^: ■s, ^ ,-.y Pig 3 .Pig 4 -^y r. ^ Figr Fig B %'' ^\ FjgX), I '!^^__y^ FigJl Kg IS Fig. 13. — Bacillus Tuberculosis magmiied 1,200 diameters (Consumption). 39 FOR r u CHOLERA INFANTUM. Symptoms. Corresponds to cholera morbus and is characterized by severe vomiting, purging, rapid prostration and collapse in consequence of the rapid loss of fluids through the intestinal canal, and the consequent suppression of urine. Anemia and uremia soon result in symptoms, similar to hydroceph- alus. The child grows restless, utters plaintive cries, rolls its head, turns the eyes inward, and falls into stupor. Treatment. Make mixture of i oz. Electrozone and 7 oz. water. Of this mixture, inject 1 oz. after each passage. Mix i part Meditrina with 10 parts water. Administer 5 drops from small glass every half hour. Fig. 14. — Actinomycotic Abscess magnified 1,200 diameters. BOILS AND CARBUNCLES. Symptoms. Carbuncle commences with severe pains in the part affected which are mostly of a burning character and con- tinue to be so throughout the whole course. The painful spot commences to swell, harden and discolor. It gener- 40 FOR r u ally assumes a purplish hue. Its treatment should com- mence in its earhest stage, thus securing a more rapid cure, and if early enough, there are chances of preventing its development. .Treatment. Saturate and apply a piece of gauze or cheese cloth with Electrozone. Apply Electrozone every two or three hours. It will relieve the pain and effect a cure. Eat only fresh and easily digested food, and less than usual. Drink liberally of water between meals, but not with meals. When the boil or carbuncle empties, syringe out the cavity with Electrozone, using a glass or rubber syringe. If there is a recurrence, treat as before, and take Meditrina in doses as prescribed for Rheumatism. EPITHELIOMA, EPITHELIAL CANCER. Symptoms. It usually begins as a little tubercle, which sooner or later cracks and ulcerates, forming a roundish sore with indurated edges and a thin scanty secretion that sometimes covers the ulcer with a brownish or yellowish crust. At an advanced age the edge becomes undermined and bleeds easily. The base assumes a dirty or grayish aspect, secreting an offensive, pale yellowish fluid. At other times the epithelioma develops in the form of warts or cauliflower excrescences of various sizes, which ultimately break down and form irregularly shaped ulcerating exca- vations which bleed easily. This growth may infect any part of the face or head. It is, however, also found on the tongue and mucous membrane of the cheek's and may appear on any part of the body. The course of the epithe- lial cancer is sometimes slow, sometimes rapid. It sooner or later involves the lymphatic glands, and if left alone, destroys life by exhaustion. Treatment. A piece of gauze saturated with Electrozone should cover this growtih as often as opportunity affords. It would be preferable to do this continuously. 41 FOR r u CANCER. Treatment. Patients suffering from this terrible malady, which claims its thousands of victims annually, may be cured, provided the disease has not progres'sed too far in its growth inward, and whenever it so presents itself that it can be attacked by external treatment with Electrozone and con- current internal treatment with Meditrina. It is claimed that these little germs or protozoa which cause cancer are the lowest of the grand divisions of animal life. Each, while contained in a cell by itself (very much resembling fat cells), reproduces by fission, and in the breaking up of the cell divisions becomes a separate and independent organism, and may again become subdivided, each division becoming in its turn an individual germ again. This germ is not developed from the true egg, but by a method of asexual reproduction, a process of self-division. Where this germ can be reached by Electrozone, every part of the cancerous surface should be thoroughly treated with undiluted Elec- trozone. The concurrent treatment should consist of rectal injections, composed of one ounce of Meditrina to two ounces of warm water. This enema should be re- tained by the patient, and this treatment should be given morning and night, preferably after a movement of the bowels. The speedy absorption by the patient of this small quantity will remove the desire to void it. In very severely malignant cases, subcutaneous injec- tions of Electrozone should be resorted to, and for such purpose specially prepared Electrozone must be used, and the application made by a specially constructed syringe, both of which are obtainable at the office of The Chemical and Electrical Company. ERYSIPELAS OF SCALP AND FACE. Symptoms. Erysipelas is an acute febrile disease characterized by a peculiar inflammation of the skin and enlargement of the neighboring lymph gland, which is accompanied by more 42 FOR T U or less severe general symptoms. It is contagious and inoculable and arises spontaneously under conditions not accurately determined. When spread by its own contagion, which diffuses itself through the air, or when it is carried by linen or instruments previously used for dressing patients with erysipelas, or when communicated by means of flies, it is called Traumatic and is mostly found in the surgical wards of hospitals. As the slightest scratch may be the recipient of the poison, the disease is often communicated to nurses and physicians. There are a number of cases especially on the face and scalp which arise without any scratch or wound and under conditions where infection is entirely out of the question — in fact, the more complex symptoms show that it is not a local but a constitutional disease in no less degree than measles, scarlatina and other febrile diseases. Fig. 15. — Section of Skin m Erysipelas magnified 600 diameters. Its local symptoms are frequently preceded for a day or two by a feelmg of languor, chilliness and feverishness; then the part affected begins to feel hot and tense, the skin reddens and swells and becomes very sensitive to the touch. At the same time, the adjacent lymphatic glands commence to swell, the inflamed portions assume a red, smooth, shmy appearance, which is, however, darker and duller on the' scalp than on other parts. The inflammation gradually creeps on until it reaches from side to side of the »calp 43 FOR YOU down into the face and even to the neck and shoulders. Unlike other infectious fevers, erysipelas leaves a very great susceptibility to renewed attacks, and not a few per- sons are subject to a periodically returning form, the so-called "habitual erysipelas," which mostly affects the face and lower extremities. Erysipelas is not dangerous, unless it spreads to internal organs. Treatment. Electrozone should be locally applied on gauze and Meditrina should be taken internally as follows : One ounce of Meditrina diluted with 3 oz. of water should be taken in sips at frequent intervals, so that each day the patient is taking I oz. of Meditrina diluted with water as above indicated. ACUTE CATARRH OF STOMACH, GASTRITIS. Symptoms. Primarily, catarrh of the stomach may be caused by taking cold or getting wet, but it is principally caused by either too cold or too hot food or drink ; or by certain kinds of food, like too fat or too old meat, and by fish, pork sausages, cheese, alcohdlic drink,' ice cream, ice water. Iced milk is still worse than ice water. Starvation is also a cause of it. Mental exertions and excitement, fright, grief, worriment and the like may cause it. The heat of the summer is most favorable for its development, no doubt on account of the free use of ice water, but it also frequently occurs in spring and fall. This sickness is indicated by the patient getting morose, feeling weak and chilly, with paleness of the face and cold extremities. The chilliness alternates with flashes of heat, red face and febrile motions. The pit of the stomach feels full and sore to the touch, so that even the pressure of a garment feels uncomfortable. The appetite is gone — the thirst, however, is generally present. At the same time, the patient feels nauseated, frequently gulps up a sour or flat tasting fluid. The generating of gas in the stomach swells the region of the stomach and causes belching. At 44 FOR r u the commencement of the disease, the bowels are mostly constipated. In some cases, gastritis is attended with a greater or less degree of fever and is then called gastric fever. The diet and bowels of the patient should be reg- ulated — easily digestible, principally hquid foods should be administered in limited quantities. Treatment. Two ounces of Meditrina diluted with 4 oz. of water should be administered each day at frequent intervals in proportionate doses. CHRONIC DIARRHEA OR TUBERCULOSIS OF THE RECTUM. For adults, inject after each passage a solution of i oz. of Electrozone to 3 oz. of hot water. This injection should be retained. Fig. 16. — Amoeba Coli in dysentery, highly magnified. CHILLS AND FEVER. Take 2 oz. of Meditrina, diluted with 3 oz. of water in sips, at frequent intervals. This 5 oz. mixture should be wholly taken each day. 4S FOR r u SOUR STOMACH. A quarter wineglassful of Meditrina in half a glass of warm water will give immediate relief. SICK HEADACHE. A quarter of a wineglassful, of Meditrina in a half glass of warm water will relieve sick headache ; and will prevent sick headache if taken when there is a feeling of distress following an excess of eating or drinking. STOMACH CATARRH, DYSPEPSIA AND INDI- GESTION. A quarter of a wineglassful of Meditrina in a half glass of warm water will stop the distress at once. When the trouble has existed for some time, from i oz. to 2 oz. Meditrina in 3 oz. of water should be taken internally each day, a half wineglassful every hour or two. Regulate diet and bowels; masticate thoroughly all food, so that it is well mixed with saliva before swallowing. Eat sparingly easily digestible food. Drink little, if any, while eating. Discontinue the use of coffee, tea and all stimulants. NASAL CATARRH. Dilute Meditrina five or six times with water, then incline the head backward, so that the liquid will reach the throat through the nose; with a "medicine dropper" apply a few drops in each nostril. Repeat several times during the next seven minutes. The application should be made on arising in the morning, and just before retiring at night. The throat should be liberally gargled with this same mixture, which should be made fresh every day. GANGRENE OR SLOUGHING SURFACES. Wash thoroughly with Electrozone. Apply cheese cloth or gauze saturated with Electrozone every two or three hours. If there beany fever or sign of blood poison- ing, take internally 2 oz. of Meditrina, diluted with 4 oz. of water, to be sipped frequently from a bottle. This 6 oz. of solution should be taken each day. 46 FOR r u One fluid ounce equals 480 drops, or one half wine- glassful. One-half ounce equals 240 drops, or one tablespoonful. One dram equals 60 drops, or one teaspoonful. This method of arriving at quantities is given to avoid the use of metal spoons. LEUCORRHCEA AND OTHER DISCHARGES. Inject solution containing i part Electrozone to 6 parts hot wrater, night and morning, and oftener if convenient. Lie on back, using a rubber tipped " fountain syringe." DISAGREEABLE ODORS. Will be removed from every part of the body by wash- ing with Electrozone. SOFT CORNS. A piece of absorbent cotton, saturated with Electro- zone, and placed between the toes, will remove soft corns. SCARLET FEVER AND MEASLES. At first symptoms of the disease, spray the nose and throat well every hour or two with a mixture of one part of Meditrina to four parts of water, and gargle the throat fre- quently with the same mixture, diminishing the intervals of the application when the rash appears. The urine should be watched to guard against dropsy. The quantity of urine should not be less than a pint a day. Noiirish- ment should be light and in liquid form. All drafts and. strong lights should be kept from the room, and in case fever is high, the body should be sponged from the head downward, not exposing too much at a time. Dur- ing the time of peeling, the body should be sponged with a sponge dampened with Electrozone. If ■ the case is severe take Meditrina internally as follows : For adults, I oz. Meditrina diluted with 4 oz. of water; this 5 oz. mixture to be wholly taken each day, in doses at frequent intervals, say hourly. For young children, one-half this quantity, should be administered as directed above. 47 FOR r u CHILBLAINS AND FROST BITE. The affected parts should be well rubbed with Elec- trozone and bandaged with absorbent cotton saturated with Electrozone. INGROWING NAILS OR INFLAMMATIONS OF THE TOES AND FINGERS. Apply absorbent cotton saturated with Electrozone. Moisten often and keep applied till cause of- trouble dis- appears. FEVER BLISTERS, ERUPTIONS OR COLD SORES. Apply absorbent cotton saturated with Electrozone. CRAMPS IN THE LIMBS, STIFF JOINTS OR STIFF NECK. Rub well with Electrozone the parts where pain is felt, after which apply to the parts folded gauze saturated with Electrozone. MUMPS. If the disease appears, treat at once or both sides will be affected. Rub well and often with Electrozone, ten or fifteen minutes each time. Recommend liquid food ; milk and mutton broth being the best ; bowels should be kept free. SEASICKNESS. Three days before starting on a voyage take some simple cathartic ; then for two days before sailing take i oz. Meditrina with 3 oz. water. This mixture should be taken in sips at short intervals each day, so that the whole mixture is taken each day. Bowels should be kept regular. Aboard boat live moderately, avoiding fancy dishes and fatty foods. Masticate all food well. Don't overload the stomach. Avoid excesses of malt and spirituous liquors. After each meal drink about one-quarter glass of water, into which has been placed twenty or thirty drops of Medi- trina. If in rough weather there Is any indication of sea- sickness or stomach disturbance, lie on the back, and, 48 FOR r u using a goblet, sip from a mixture of one part Meditrina and seven parts of water. After a few sips all feeling of seasickness will disappear. When this feeling passes off, no fear of additional seasickness during the balance of the voyage' need be feared. GRANULATED EYELIDS, INFLAMED EYES OR LIDS AND SLOUGHING CORNEA. Will be cured by bathing the eyes with i part of Med- itrina to 15 to 20 parts warm water. The best way of making application for granulated eyelids is with an " eye cup," procurable at druggists. This held over the eye will allow the eyelid to open and close, thus assuring contact of the Meditrina with the affected parts. A continued regular treatment in this manner will effect a cure. For sloughing cornea, drop into the eye 2 drops of a mixture of I part Meditrina to 6 parts water. Do this three times a day. EARACHE. Remove wax, using warm water and castile soap. Saturate a piece of absorbent cotton with Electrozone, and insert in the ear. It will speedily remove the pain. Dis- charges from the ear may be arrested and cured by gently syringing (with glass syringe) the ear with Electrozone diluted one-half with warm water, so that the mixture is warm when applied. IVY POISON. Apply gauze saturated with Electrozone to affected parts. In chronic cases, take internally I oz. of Meditrina diluted with 3 oz. of water; this amount is to be taken daily in sips at frequent intervals. RINGWORMS, SHINGLES AND RASHES. Wash parts affected with castile soap and warm water. Apply Electrozone for 15 to 30 minutes, night and morn- ing, and oftener if desired. The itching and irritation should soon cease. 49 FOR r u INSECT BITES, HIVES, PRICKLY HEAT AND SUNBURN. Apply Electrozone freely. Repeat if necessary. CUTS, BURNS, SCALDS, BRUISES, ABRASIONS OR SPRAINS. Apply gauze saturated with Electrozone, frequently remoistening the gauze. BLOOD POISONING AND INFECTED WOUND. Fig. 17. — Micrococcus of sputum Septicsemra raagnifiea 1,000 diameters (Blood Poisoning). Apply Electrozone full strength to the affected parts, and renew application frequently. In severe cases, admin- ister internally i oz. Meditrina with 3 oz. water. Take this quantity daily, in equal doses every hour. SO FOR r u ECZEMA. Bathe with Electrozone for five minutes, or make five- minute application with gauze saturated with Electrozone every three hours. Dilute I oz. Meditrina with 3 oz. of water. Take sip doses frequently, so that the whole 4 qz. of mixture be taken each day. This is for adults ; diminish according to age. TOOTHACHE. If a lower tooth aches, and there is a cavity, insert a piece of' absorbent cotton well saturated with Meditrina. If there is no cavity, lay a piece of absorbent cotton, sat- urated with Meditrina, on the gum where the pain is felt, moistening the cotton with Meditrina from time to time. If the ache is in the upper jaw, the hollow of the tooth must be syringed, or the head held back so that a piece of cotton, saturated with Meditrina, when placed in the tooth will part with enough liquid to reach the germ attacking the nerve of the tooth. RUNNING SORES. Wash with castile soap and warm water. Apply Electrozone freely. Moisten a piece of gauze with Electro- zone and cover the affected part. Renew every three hours. PILES, HEMORRHOIDS AND INFLAMMATORY CONDITIONS. When the trouble can be reached, wash thoroughly with full strength Electrozone, and apply a cloth saturated with Electrozone diluted one-half with water before retir- ing, allowing it to remain in position during night. If the trouble is internal, use rubber syringe and inject about a pint of a solution containing 3 oz. Electrozone to 12 or 14 oz. of warm water after each passage. External washing night and morning is necessary under all conditions for external troubles of the rectum. Itching piles, though appearing to be external, are caused by internal conditions. Where external treatment does not effect a cure, take injection as above indicated. SI FOR T U One fluid ounce equals 480 drops, or one-half wine- glassful. One-half ounce equals 240 drops, or one tablespoonful. One dram equals 60 drops, or one teaspoonful. This method of arriving a: quantities is given to avoid the use of metal spoons. COLIC AND CRAMPS IN THE STOMACH. A quarter of a wineglassful of Meditrina, equivalent to a tablespoonful, in half glass hot water should stop the cramp. If it does not repeat in 10 or 15 minutes. TO THE OBSTETRICIAN. In confinement cases, when Electrozone is properly used, blood poisoning and childbed fever will be prevented. DANDRUFF OR FALLING HAIR AND ECZEMA. Wash the head with castile soap, rinse thoroughly, and apply Electrozone liberally. Rub in well, and keep up friction with hand or brush for ten minutes, after which wash out the Electrozone. Dry the hair, then rub thor- oughly with brush till active circulation in scalp is estab- lished. This process should be continued every day, till the hair ceases falling out, all dandruff is removed, and all itching stopped. The scalp should be treated as above about once or twice every month, to keep it in healthful condition. If the hair becomes too dry a little of any suit- able oil may be used. Abstinence from food may often cure many ailments which are produced from overeating or luxurious living. The system rebels against being overworked. Indigestion, giddiness, headache, mental depression, etc., are often the effects of greediness in eating and drinking. Omitting one, two or three meals allows the system to rest, to regain strength, and allows the clogged organs to dispose of their burdens. The practice of drug-taking to cleanse the stomach, though it may give the needed relief, always weakens the system, with ill effects, while abstinence often secures the same results and yet does no injury. S2 HELP IN CASE OF ACCIDENTS In every case of injury resulting in a scratch, cut or abrasion of the skin, the wound should be immediately bathed with Electrozone so as to destroy any germs of disease that may be present. By doing this, the soreness will be taken out and inflammation prevented, and it will afford a safeguard against tetanus, or lockjaw, the bacilli of which terrible disease is found in the earth, or in the dirt which may be present upon the knife, shell, splinter or other thing which caused the wound. ^ \ \ A Fig. 1 8 — Tetanus bacillus magnified 1,200 diameters (Lockjaw). Electrozone should be gotten into the wound thor- oughly to its full depth, so that it may come in contact with all germs that may have found a lodgment. It will certainly destroy all that it reaches. For this purpose, especially where there are children, who are more liable to such injuries than adults, a bottle of Electrozone should be always kept at hand. DROWNING. I. Loosen clothing, if any. 2. Empty lungs of water by laying body on its stomach and lifting it by the middle so that the head hangs down. Jerk the body a few 53 FOR r u times. 3. Pull tongue forward, using handkerchief, or pin with string, if necessary. 4. Imitate motion or respi- ration by alternately compressing and expanding the lower ribs, about twenty times a minute. Alternately raising and lowering the arms from the sides up above the head will stimulate the action of the lungs. Let it be done gently but persistently. 5. Apply warmth and friction to ex- tremities. 6. By holding tongue forward, closing the nostrils and pressing the " Adam's apple " back (so as to close entrance to stomach) direct inflation can be tried. Take a deep breath and breathe it forcibly into the mouth of the patient. Compress the chest to expel the air and repeat the operation. 7. DON'T GIVE UP! People have been saved after A»«rj of patient, vigorous effort. 8. When breathing begins, get patient into warm bed, give warm drinks, or spirits in teaspoonfuls, secure fresh air and quiet. TO STOP BLEEDING OF THE NOSE. Find the artery on both sides of the face where it crosses the jaw, some two or three inches above the point of the chin, press it closely against the bone with the thumb and forefinger; observe which nostril bleeds most freely, and press harder on that side. This gives speedy relief and is far more agreeable than rolls of paper pressed above the front teeth, or cold keys and cold water applied to the back of the neck. 54 EXPERIENCE OF AMERICAN PHYSICIANS IN HOSPITAL AND PRIVATE PRACTICE 6 1 West 51st Street, New York. The Chemical and Electrical Company, Gentlemen. — I have used Electrozone in both my hospital and private practice, with very gratifying results. In fact, I do not know of any better deodorizer or non-irritating antiseptic. Edw. G. Ttjttle, M. D. The Strathmore, New York City. I have used Electrozone with satisfaction in the treatment of suppurative diseases. I am using it in mastoid cases after opera- tion, and have not found that it causes any irritation of the mem- branes of the brain. George A. Shepard, M. D. 59 West 5zd Street, New York City. I approve highly of Electrozone. It has remarkable germ- destroying properties, and i.s most useful in surgical work of all kinds. L. L. Danforth, M. D. G. Lenox Curtis, M. D., New York, from a paper read before the American Medical Association, upon the " Resection and Reproduction of the Maxills ": "To facilitate cleansing of the wound and destruction of the pus, let rrie recommend to you Electrozone, the best of all agents I have found for the purpose." 130 West 48th Street, New York. The Chemical and Electrical Company, New: York City. Gentlemen. — Answering your questions as to Electrozone, I will say that I use it in my practice, and consider it a valuable prepa- ration. F. W. Hamlin, M. D. 55 FOR r u 778 Madison Avenue, New York City. Electrozone is the best disinfectant known to me. My pro- fessional position would not allow me to use one drop of it or extol its virtues, which I have so frequently done in my clinics, had I not made a most carefiil analysis and a most searching inves- tigation as to its properties and uses, thus verifying its efficiency by experiment for an extended period. So thoroughly am I con- vinced of its potency that I use it in my work to the exclusion of other disinfectants. Wilfred G. Fralick, M. D. Katonah, March zzd, 1901. The Chemical and Electrical Company, 415 Lexington Ave., N. Y. Received your booklets last night. Mrs. Wood (my wife) used your Electrozone for chronic sciatica, and it helped her at once. I have used it for neuralgia in lowest part of the spine, and it had a remarkable eiFect. Used Meditrina also for chronic catarrh, dyspepsia and Grippe, and it worked wonders. I also find it to be a splendid mouth wash. In Grippe I find Electrozone and Meditrina to be specifics, clearing out the nose, mouth, throat, stomach and bowels. J. G. Wood, M. D. New York City. Gentlemen. — With reference to my experience with Electro- zone, I can say that I have known it in Hospital, Dispensary and other work. It is very effective as an antiseptic, for application to cuts, sores, or any raw or inflamed surface. It is very cleans- ing, keeping the parts sweet and pure, and is active in the reduc- tion of pus. As a disinfectant and deodorizer it is especially good. Very truly yours. Dr. Pettet. George Clinton Jeffery, M. D., of Brooklyn, says: "Electrozone has become a most important factor in my surgi- cal practice. I consider it as essential to a successful result as the scalpel or artery clip." 56 TESTIMONIALS New York City. Electrozone is my stand-by and I cling to it like a leech. The cloth bandage has the most soothing effect of anything used yet, and I apply it freely and constantly. F. Hamilton, M. D. 38 Clinton Street, Brooklyn, N. Y. I am much gratified with the use of Meditrina as an antiseptic as well as a corrective in acid stomachs. It is valuable as a puri- fier of the bad drinking water in Brooklyn. L. C. D'HOMERGUE, M. D. 1 38 1 Boston Road, New York. The Chemical and Electrical Company, Gentlemen. — I use Electrozone with entire success in my practice generally, especially as a wash and compress wherever there is pus, old sores of many months' standing, also in varicose and venereal conditions, and those succeeding bruises. I cleanse the ulcer and then apply a compress of Electrozone, keeping it wet, that being the only, external treatment. In a recent case where the great toe was bruised severely in a machine and pus supervened so that the joint was open, pain was relieved at once and healing followed rapidly by this treatment. Yours sincerely, Anne L. Langworthy, M. D. Office of the Association for Befriending Children and Young Girls, House of the Holy Family, 1 36 Second Avenue, New York City. The Chemical and Electrical Company, 415 Lexington Avenue, New York City. In diphtheria, scarlet fever, skin diseases, and for leucorrhoea 57 FOR YOU and diseases of women and children, especially where marked by acute inflammatory conditions, I have found that the proper use of Electrozone and Meditrina has been invariably efficacious. I do not feel that I can recommend these two commodities too strongly. Yours truly, H. L. Beyea, M. D. 214 East 53d Street, New York. The Chemical and Electrical Company, New York City. Gentlemen. — Responding to your inquiry, I would say that I have found the use of Electrozone most advantageous when applied to fresh cuts or wounds, especii^lly in operations on the urethra, vagina and uterus, and in curetting, etc. My experience with Electrozone in such cases has shown it to be very efficacious and the best and safest material to use. Yours, J. OscoE Chase, M. D. 1 59 West 1 26th Street, New York. The Chemical and Electrical Company, New York, N. Y. Gentlemen. — Although absolutely contrary to my custom in such matters, I have decided to reply to your inquiries as to my experience with Electrozone. I am using it constantly for many purposes, and invariably find it to be most effective. It is particularly valuable in all maternity work, where I always employ it. Its antiseptic and disinfecting qualities are unsurpassed, for cleansing the hands during labor, for bathing my patient afterward and during convalescence, for keep- ing the nipples and breasts clean, and if artificial feeding is used, to keep the bottle and nipple perfectly aseptic. For these and many other uses I rely on Electrozone. Sincerely yours, J. H. Demarest, M. D. S8 T E S T I M N I A L S Chas. F. Newman, M. D., 146)^ Java Street, Brooklyn, N. Her leg is in better condition to-day than I have seen it during the past two years. It has been a God-send to myself. Last week I had a very severe attack of hives. I used it only once, externally. The itch disappeared as if by magic. So much for myself. One of the children had mumps on both sides of his neck. My wife and myself took turns in rubbing his neck about once an hour. The swelling was entirely gone inside of twenty-four hours." Dr. Franklin J. Vose, 1050 Greene Avenue, Brooklyn, N. Y., says : "I have used your Electrozone with entire satisfaction in cases of puerperal septicemia, vaginitis, abscesses, indolent ulcers, es- pecially where there was a tendency to gangrene. I have found it also valuable as a spray in severe cases of tonsil- itis, also in chronic inflammation of the mucous membrane of the throat and mouth caused by excessive smoking. In fact, it is the most perfect disinfectant that I have ever used." 513 Locust Street, Des Moines, Iowa. The Electrozone you sent me I used in a severe case of kron- chorrhcea during typhoid. The odor was distracting in its inten- sity and ofFensiveness. The Electrozone was a successful deodor- izer, and was continued through the case. I have recommended it to patients. Lucy M. Busenbark-Harbagh, M. D. Lamar Bath House, Mineral Wells, Texas. I used the Electrozone purchased of you, with the very finest results in many kinds of troubles. This solution has decided germicidal pow- ers, which I have proved by experiment, and I prefer it to peroxide of hydrogen." 114 Chestnut Street, Harrisburg, Pa. I have used Electrozone in cases of extensive scalds and burns. For raw surfaces, scalds, burns, ulcers, etc., I know of no appli- cation to equal it. It is simply wonderful in its therapeutic action. I h.ive one case of open surface so extensive that I fully expected to do skin grafting. I used no application but full strength Electro- zone, and discharge the patient to-day cured with very little cica- tricial tissue. I am more than pleased with its use in all of my cases T. L. However, I am convinced that Electrozone is a prompt, radical and efficient antiseptic germicide, deodorizer and disinfec- tant. In St. Joseph's Foundling Home, at which I am the attend- ing physician, it is giving the most eminent satisfaction. I have also tested it in my outdoor practice as a spray in diphtheria, and have found a lowering of the temperature and a destruction of the membraneous canker after a few applications. Having been Health Officer of this city for a term of years, I can readily per- ceive how Electrozone may become a boon to Boards of Health as well as physicians everywhere. I have spoken warmly of its efficacy to many physicians and druggists in this city and county." 209 Locust Street, Evansville, Ind. I cannot speak too highly of Meditrina. It is an excellent wash to clean a surface to be op- erated on. For washing the hands prior to an operation, or before making a vaginal examination, it is equal if not far superior to corrosive sublimate, and has the advantage of being non-poisonous and of not affecting the skin. The Chemical and Electrical Company, New York City. Gentlemen. — You will remember that I called at your office some time ago and obtained information with reference to the use of Electrozone for a certain rectal trouble. The case was that of a relative of mine, and proved so serious that an operation became necessary. This was decided upon, and performed very shortly after my call. Electrozone was applied for a fsvf days prior to the operation, and was also used during the operation itself, and constantly for cleansing and dressing the wound during the time of healing. In this use, it proved to be exceedingly beneficial, as is definitely shown by the fact that the wound healed splendidly, and everything is now in perfectly healthful condition. I write you the above, as I promised to let you know the results in this case. Yours truly, A. J. Atkinson. Madison Square Garden, N. Y. My distresses ceased after I had com- menced using your preparations, which are Icept constantly in our house. The value of Electrozone and Meditrina is appreciated by my wife as much as myself, and our appreciation cannot be better told than by the confidence with which we avail ourselves of them, when necessity occasions the use of medicine. My attention was first called to Electrozone at the time your company disinfected the Garden when we had an animal show. The work done was certainly marvelous. The Chemical and Electrical Company, Gentlemen. — I take pleasure in informing you that the Medi- trina recommended to me did more than you promised, for in addition to curing me of the catarrh and dyspepsia, it also created a ravenous appetite, and I felt no inconvenience after a few days in satisfying my appetite, whereas before, great distress followed eating. After taking the medicine for a short time I gained eight pounds, whereas I was losing flesh before commencing with the Meditrina. I am anxious for you to know also that it cured a sore throat and a gathering on my finger which seemed as though it had been poisoned. The Chemical and Electrical Company, Gentlemen. — Answering your question, I have to say that I have used Electrozone for disinfecting and deodorizing purposes. It has given excellent results, and I cannot speak too highly of the material. Very truly yours, John C. Lowe. Mike Murphy, Instructor in Athletics, University of Pennsyl- vania: "After an external use of Electrozone I have reached the follow- ing conclusions: 69 FOR YOU As a rubbing-down fluid, after exercise in any sport, I believe Electrozone to be without peer among competitors. This supe- riority is due to the following reasons: First. — Being an antiseptic solution, it completely cleanses and disinfects the pores in a manner which cannot be approached by any other fluid. Second. — Those exercises which occasion profuse perspiration sometimes cause skin eruptions. Electrozone kills the germs which cause these various diseases of the skin, destroys all fetid odors, and leaves the parts sweet and clean. Third. — Worn-out tissues are instantly destroyed. Thus the medicine aids the trainer in getting his man into the condition where all his tissues are vital. This • vital stage ' is reached when a man, to use a sporting phrase, is ' on edge ' or ' fine as silk.' Fourth. — Being a stimulant, Electrozone brings blood to the part where it is applied, and in its prior use prevents, and in its subsequent use cures, stiffness. Fifth. — It primarily produces a healthy action of the pores, so that the waste tissues are readily thrown off, and the entire system benefited and strengthened." 230 East zyth Street, New York. Having been detailed as Head Nurse on "Swinburne Island" during the Cholera Epidemic of '93, I can speak with some authority of the merits of Woolf's Electrozone as a disinfectant and enteroclysis. Out of 30 cases I used the Electrozone on 20, with splendid results; only one patient died, and in that one case the cause of death was due to complications of kidney and lung troubles. The autopsy sustained the diagnosis of the doctors as to the presence of cholera. I think the Electrozone better than all other disinfectants. I have tried them all, and am in a posi- tion to say that your Electrozone is far ahead of everything I have ever used. Resp'y, Irving F. Robert Bloomsburg, Superintendent Ferries, Pennsylvania Rail- way Company: " I have thoroughly tested the deodorizing qualities of the sam- ple of Electrozone in our ferry water-closets at Jersey City, which, owing to the large number of people who use them, are pretty hard places to deodorize; but I find on using your Electro- zone, about a pint each morning and night, we have been able to keep them in first-class shape. I think it is one of the best de- odorizers for water-closets that I ever saw." S. E. C. Ackerman, Professional Nurse, 230 East 27th Street, New York City. " I had the pleasure of testing the value of your Electrozone as a disinfectant in typhoid-pneumonia, and I am pleased to state that I have never seen its equal in any sick-room. Certificates of Brewster Officials. IRK, I r ss. : 1, > State of New York, County of Putnam, This is to certify that I, Dr. J. G. Wood, Health Officer of the Town of Southeast, which includes the Village of Brewster, have watched with care and studied the working of the Woolf Electric System of disinfecting, as constructed at Brewster ; that before the introduction of the system in said town, scarlet fever pre- vailed as an epidemic, and has been the cause of temporarily closing the public school ; that malarial diseases, such as intermittent fever, remittent, typho-malaria and typhoid fevers, were at times epidemic, I losing in one of th6 epidemics my wife, also nearly losing my son ; that since the introduction of the Woolf System of disinfect- ing there has been no epidemic nor outbreak of any of the diseases existing heretofore. The village has never been, to my know- ledge, in such a healthful condition. I have, in my professional duty, constantly watched the effect of the plant, and found its work as a disinfectant to be most complete. I have ceased to receive complaints since its construction, many of which I had before the plant was introduced into the village, and the benefits to the vil- lage are universally acknowledged. I have frequently visited the dikes into which the sewage empties, while under treatment with the electrical disinfectant, and have always found them to be de- 72 TESTIMONIALS odorized and disinfected and in a condition positively not detri- mental to health. Tonnetta Brook was selected as containing a very much larger amount of impurities than the Croton River. The analyses have been of two kinds : First, chemical. Second, bacteriological. The Electrozone was sprayed into Tonnetta Brook at a point about 300 feet from its mouth. Electrozone equivalent to one part of the contained hypochlorites to 100,000 of water was used in the experiment. First: Chemical. — The comparison of the results of the analy- ses of the sample taken before and after the addition of the Elec- trozone and on different days and before and after heavy rains shows that the nitrogenous matter was very largely oxidized into nitrates. These results showed that the action of the Electrozone is to render the water, which is contaminated before treatment, pure and suitable for domestic use. Second: Bacteriological. — Samples were taken at the same time and place as those for the chemical analyses, examined as to the number of bacteria contained, before and after the reaction of the Electrozone, with the following results. Number of bacteria per cubic centimeters in samples taken : Before Treatment: After Treatment: 32,600 8 22, 000 4.2 2.3S5 12 4.134 o 7,000 o In other words, the water seems to be rendered sterile by the addition of the Electrozone. 74 T E S T I M N I A L S The germicidal action of this weaic solution of Electrozone is so marked, and so much greater than has generally been supposed, the process and idea of purifying water in this way is so novel, and the importance — should this prove a success — to a community so great, that while every care was taken in making the bacteriological tests, yet, a verification would, in my opinion, be very desirable. I respectfully recommend that a specialist in bacteriology be em- ployed to go over the same ground that I have been over, so that my results can be checked and verified." Report of Health Commissioner New York Board of Health: "I have the honor to forward herewith reports of Dr. Herman M. Biggs, Chief Inspector in charge of disinfection and bacteri- ology, and E. W. Martin, Chemist of the Department, on the subject of that disinfecting solution. The process affecting this has been discovered by Mr. Albert E. Woolf. I visited him for the purpose of investigating the manner in which he makes the Electrozone Disinfectant, as he terms it. The report of the Chemist shows from analyses of the disin- fectant that effective germicidal and deodorant compounds are present in the solution. The exhaustive experiments of Dr. Biggs proved that the rea- soning based on the results obtained by the Chemist is correct, and that the Electrozone disinfectant in question is one of extraordinary power. It is also of great value as m deodorizer. There is no doubt, however, that the efficacy of the Electro- zone is due, not alone to the chlorine and bromine and their com- pounds (hypochlorites), but also to the presence of ozone, which is formed by the decomposition of the hypochlorites in the pres- ence of organic matter. We have in this liquor, in my opinion, a unique disinfectant, combining powerful disinfecting and deodorizing properties with low cost, to be made at any time, in any quantity. A disinfectant that in consequence of its cheapness and non-poisonous quality can be 75 * FOR YOU so freely and universally used as to make its discovery one of the most important, from a sanitary standpoint, that has ever been made. The deodorant properties of the Electrical Disinfectant will give it a vifide applicability in the abatement of nuisances caused by the so-called • offensive trades.' During the prevalence of such diseases as Asiatic Cholera, Yel- low Fever and other contagious diseases, it would be of inestimable value. Tests made under the direction of the New York Board of Health, by its bacteriologist, showed that the spirillje (or germs) of Asiatic cholera were destroyed by Electrozone in 30 seconds. It also destroyed the germs of typhoid and the anthrax spores. It is proven to be equally effective for the destruction of every known disease germ whenever it is brought into contact with them." WHAT IS SAID OF ELECTROZONE IN ENGLAND. The demonstrations were reported upon by Professor Henry Robinson, M. Inst., C. E., M. Inst., E. E., Professor A. A. Kanthack, M. A., M. D., F. R., C. P., R-. C. S., Professor of Pathology, Cambridge University, and Dr. Samuel Rideal, D. Sc, land, F. I. C. The plant was near the sewage outfall works. Professor Kan- thack shows that the amount of available chlorine in the Electro- zone (as indicated by the arsenious acid test) necessary to sterilize the tank effluent, or the filtered effluent, was only about one fifth 76 <'^=. •"■^i^j / Fig 2. Fig3. Fig. XIX. — Bacillus anthiax, as shown on the' above plate, 77 FOR r u of a grain per gallon of effluent, whereupon Professor Robinson says: " This is a remarkable result, inasmuch as it had been pre- viously estimated that a very much larger quantity would be re- quired." Professor Robinson adds: " The addition of this extremely small quantity oi chlorine succeeds in destroying practically all the bacteria, only I in loo,- ooo, or even less, being found in the effluent after a minute's con- tact with Electrozone. In other words, out of every million bacteria in the sewage only ten survive the treatment, and the resulting effluent contains less bacteria than most of the water sup- plies to large towns. Electrozone is also a most effective de- odorant on account of its action in destroying gas-producing organisms." The conclusions of Professor Kanthack's report are: "These results are surprisingly good, and have not been reached by any system of sewage treatment hitherto attempted. ' ' As to the economy of the process. Professor Robinson says: "These figures compare very favorably with the cost of any combined chemical precipitation process with filtration of effluent, while the resulting effluent would be absolutely pure beyond doubt." Professor Robinson adds: «'If an effluent is pure enough to comply with the usual tests of chemists and is then treated with Electrozone to the extent of one fifth of a grain of chlorine per gallon, the result will be an immense advance on the best processes of sewage treatment now in use." And further: " The effluent from the bacterial beds can in all cases be steril- ized by Electrozone, and an effluent produced of a standard ad- 78 T E S T I M N I A L S mitting of being discharged, not only into ordinary streams, but to those which contribute to sources of water supply." Professor Kanthack says, with reference to his experiments made in January and February, '98: " There can be no doubt that the bactericidal action of Elec- trozone in its purification of a sewage efiluent is not only consid- erable, but even surprising. As far as the bacteria are concerned, it must be conceded that after treatment with Electrozone the effluent is harmless." Report of the Public Analyst, Palmerston Building, 34 Old Broad Street, E. C, London, England, November 4, '96: "I beg to report to you on my analyses of Electrozone and Medi- trina, and at the same time beg to furnish you with the results of some of the experiments I have made with these products. The following were the analytical results I obtained: Specific Gravity, 1018.6. Reaction, Very slightly alkaline. Total Solids, 1745 Grains per gallon. Combined Chlorine as Chlorides, 670.9 " Equal as Chloride of Sodium, 1 105-7 " Chlorine existing as Hy- pochlorites and capa- ble of being attended by action of acids, 375 " " " Electrozone is thus what it is represented to be, and contains a large proportion of the original chlorine with small quantities of iodine and bromine in a condition in which the well-known deo- dorizing effect of these bodies can be exerted upon any organic sub- stance with which the liquid is brought in contact. Its action is practically an oxidizing one, for the chlorine as it is liberated by 79 FOR r u the action of acids, and even to some extent by the carbonic acid in the atmosphere, reacts on water and evolves oxygen, which, in its nascent condition, has a most powerful effect on all organic bodies, especially such as are in the incipient state of putrefaction. The quantity of available chlorine is equivalent to 175 grains of oxygen per gallon, so that every gallon of Electrozone is capable of liberating nearly twice its own volume of oxygen gas in its most active condition. It was not, therefore, surprising to find that Electrozone exerts a most powerful action on all animal and vegetable substances. It possesses, in fact, antiseptic, germicidal and disinfecting properties to a remarkable degree, and these are manifested directly when the fluid is applied to any decomposing organic substance, with the result that all living organisms cease to exist and putrefaction is at once arrested. I have tried the effect of Electrozone on various substances, and have found that the evolu- tion of fetid odors is immediately checked. It appears to me, there- fore, that this product will be found most efficacious in deodorizing the sewage of towns and checking those putrefactive changes which are detrimental to public health. I have, in addition, made some experiments on the action of Electrozone on polluted water supplies, and found that when applied in the proportion of one part to 10,000 parts of water, it oxidized nearly the whole of the organic matter, so that only traces of albuminoid ammonia were left. I further noticed that Electrozone immediately destroys the vitality of any living organ- isms which such polluted water contains." Speech of A. B. Fripp, M. D., M. S., F. R., C. S., Consulting Physician of Guy's Hospital, London, from the " Maidenhead Advertiser," May 13, 1896: At a dinner given at the town of Maidenhead, on the Thames River, on May 1 2, 1 896, on the completion of an Electrozone plant, constructed to disinfect the sewage of the town, the Mayor, who presided at the dinner, remarked as follows: 80 T E S T I M N I A L S " Before I sit down I would like to call attention to the fact that there is a gentleman present who has conducted tests of his own, and I would like to propose the health of Dr. Fripp, whose name is well known at Guy's Hospital, and who for the last seven months has conducted experiments with Electrozone." Dr. Fripp in response said the experiments he had made were very many, and the Corporation had from the very first, with Lord Warwick, their Chairman, gone to the highest authorities for con- firmation of those experiments, including the official analyst at the Home Office and two of the most eminent bacteriologists in. the country. In every case they had had favorable reports, and rhey had not yet received an unfavorable one. Had there been one, he would have drawn attention to it, because he believed it to be the duty of a scientist to do so. One gentleman said that the chief difficulty they would have to contend against was that the sanitary question was being grappled in a thoroughly successful manner, in the opinion of the promoters of the various other schemes, at least twice a week. He (Dr. Fripp) thought, however, that they had good reasons to feel confident in the Electrozone process. He should like to mention that the investigation that day was a thoroughly extemporary affair, and grew out of an invitation to one or two members of the Surveyors' Institute. In his own science, he had tried this Electrozone on many diseases, and had found that in every case it was a good deodorant. The more stinking the disease, the more difficult the case was to treat, and however bad the sores, whether about the mouth or on other parts of the body, the disease was attacked better by Electrozone than by any other antiseptic; it was more powerful than any other disinfectant he had ever met with. The number of the bacteria in the effluent they had seen that day was between fifty and sixty thousand per cubic centi- meter, but by. the application of Electrozone all bacteria had been completely destroyed, and when they attempted to cultivate them on a gelatine plate, the best-known method of cultivating bacteria. 8l FOR r u they were unable to make them grow at all. As a matter of fact, eight were afterward found in the effluent he had mentioned, but anything under a hundred bacteria in that quantity of effluent was regarded as a sterilization of that fluid. What is said of Electrozone in Guatemala. Dr. Ernesto Mancas, Director Board of Health, Guatemala, Guatemala : "In regard to the powerful disinfectant Electrozone, I have made experiments with the four bottles you sent me in cases of Yellow and Typhoid fever. I have had very good results, and am very glad you had such a good specific." HAVANA PURIFIED BY ELECTROZONE. The United States Government officials. Department of Havana, have been and are using Electrozone in the purification of Havana. The death-rate there in February, 1901, was 19.32 per thousand, less than one fourth what it was when the United States took pos- session, and by several per cent, less than the rate in New York City for the same period.. Havana has become one of the most healthful cities in the world. This has been brought about in a very large degree by the use of Electrozone. The Government manufactures and uses many thousand gallons of Electrozone per day; the streets have been sprinkled with it; buildings and sewers have been disinfected by it; and contagious disease has been practically stamped out. The " Havana Herald^' says: " General Ludlow and Colonel Black express the highest degree of confidence in Electrozone as a preventive of infectious disease." And the "New York World''' of April 1 1 says: "Havana began April, 1 90 1, without a case of yellow fever." 82 TE S T I M N I A L S John G. Davis, Major and Brigade Surgeon, U. S. V., Headquarters Department of Havana, Office of the Acting Chief Surgeon, Havana, Cuba: To the Adjutant-General, Department of Havana: "\ have the honor to submit the following report on Electro- zone. I have witnessed the manufacturing by the Woolf system of electrolysis; I have supplied the water, and witnessed its manu- facture and saw the demonstration exhibiting its action on organic matter. I have made calculations and had the material I have seen made tested on putrescent matter; have seen matter in a state of decom- position and have witnessed the immediate arrest of decay. I have seen comparative tests made, and am convinced of the potency of the so-called Electrozone. I know of no germicide as potent, and certainly none so cheaply procured. From a thorough investigation in detail I have concluded that the Woolf system produces the most effective disinfectant at a smaller price than any with which I am familiar. I had already arrived at this conclusion when endorsements were presented to me. After seeing the endorsements I find my opinion backed up, as its use is advocated by: The New York Board of Health, The Philadelphia Board of Health, The Home of Consumptives of Philadelphia, Will's Hospital, Philadelphia, Dean, Metropolitan's Post-Graduate School of Medicine, New York, Samuel Rideal, D. Sec, acknowledged expert on sanitation. Professor A. A. Kanthack, of Cambridge University, Professor Tucker, Bacteriologist of the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy, Dr. Fripp, Head Visiting Surgeon, Guy's Hospital, London, recently decorated, all of whom endorse the product of the Woolf system as superior to all other germicides. 83 FOR YOU The work accomplished by this system since its discovery ex- ceeds by far anything T can find any record of. I have had per- sonal demonstrations made which convince me I can conscientiously report that a liberal use of this product would relieve, to a great extent, the dangerous condition existing in Havana during the rainy season, when epidemics jeopardize the lives of so many of the residents, and I feel, since the investigation has been made, that, with the knowledge we possess, we would be negligent in our duty did we fail to take advantage of the advance in science. I am convinced that the amount of sickness prevented is merely dependent upon the amount of Electrozone material used. In my opinion, all of the streets should be sprinkled with Elec- trozone, and especially those which are not paved. I am also in favor of using it to flush the sewers and to disinfect the houses. The amount to be used in the way I have indicated would require at least 100,000 gallons of Electrozone daily. If we can do this, I am fairly convinced that the germs of disease which are dormant in the soil, and which will spring into life and activity at the first opportune moment, will be entirely destroyed, and that dread scourge yellow fever will forever disappear." Major Davis' Report was Indeed Prophetic Note. — The United States Government ofiicials. Department of Havana, reported the death-rate in Havana for month of February, 1 901, to have been 19.32 per thousand, as above stated, or much less than one fourth what it was when the United States took possession, and by several per cent, less than the death- rate of the City of New York for the same period, making Havana, as said, one of the most healthful cities in the world. The Government manufactured and used over 5,000,000 gallons of Electrozone in ten months. The Mutual Life Insurance Company of New Vork Jerry J. Warren, Agente General Havana. This is to certify that, in my opinion, Electrozone is one of the best disinfectants, and from my observation of its use in Havana, believe that it has proved a success. Jerry J. Very truly, Cazetano Perez, NO URISHMENT FOR THE SICK FARINA GRUEL. Stir two tablespoonfuls of farina in three of milk, pour it in a pint of boiling water, and boil until thoroughly cooked, stirring often to keep it smooth ; when done add a pinch of salt and two gills of cream. INDIAN MEAL GRUEL. Make a thin paste with cold water of two tablespoon- fuls of white Indian meal ; stir this into a quart of boiling water salted ; boil it four hours or longer, make a thin paste of a teaspoonful of wheat flour, stir it into a large teacupful of boiling milk, let it boil up once, then add this to the Indian meal, and let it boil up once. This can be made thicker or thinner to suit the taste. When made rather thick, it is very nice thinned with a little cream or otherwise to suit the taste. THICKENED MILK. Scald one pint of milk over boiling water, and pour it on two even tablespoonfuls of flour mixed smooth in two tablespoonfuls of cold milk, return it to the boiling water, stir well and let it cook thoroughly, season to the taste with salt, and sugar, if liked. Beat the white of an egg to a dry froth, pour the gruel on it, mixing thoroughly, then serve. SOAKED CRACKER. Cover a hard pilot biscuit with cold water, and when the water is absorbed cover it again, and place it in the oven ; when thoroughly heated and puffed, serve it with a little salt and a few spoonfuls of sweet, rich cream. CREAM TOAST. Toast a slice of bread evenly and quickly, not allowing it to become hard ; barely dip it in boiling water, then sprinkle some salt over it, and cover it with a few spoon- fuls of sweet, rich cream. 91 FOR YOU TOAST WATER. Toast two slices of bread thoroughly, but without the least burning ; put them in a quart pitcher ; while hot, pour cold water over them. This takes the chill from the water and gives it an agreeable flavor. Slices of toast nicely browned, enough of boiling water to cover, cover and let steep until cold, then strain the water and sweeten to taste. A piece of ice or lemon-juice may be added to each glass. CRUST COFFEE. Toast the bread slowly, as brown as possible without burning, pour boiling water on it, cover, and let it steep awhile, to draw the flavor and nourishment from the bread. It may then be prepared with sugar and cream, or not, as preferred. Graham and Boston brown-bread, toasted slowly and thoroughly, make excellent coffee. CORN COFFEE. Shell ripe, dry corn, and roast it like coffee, evenly, and of a deep brown ; fill the coffee-boiler half full of coffee, and nearly fill it with boihng water, cover, and let it steep two hours ; more water may be added to the corn for a second making. It is highly nutritious, and with sugar and cream is very much liked. Carrots cut fine, dried, and roasted, are also used, and improve the taste. CHICKEN BROTH. Wash half the breast and one wing of a tender chicken ; put it in a saucepan with one and a half pints of water, a tablespoonful of rice or pearl barley ; let it simmer slowly, and skim; season to the taste. When the chicken is thoroughly cooked, take it out, and serve the broth in a bowl, with a bit of dry toast. If barley is used it should be first soaked for several hours. CHICKEN JELLY. Cut a chicken for a fricassee, and to two and a half pounds add one quart of water ; boil and skim, then simmer FOR r u slowly until the water is reduced to one pint ; strain through a cloth ; when cold, stir in the crushed and beaten white of an egg, a little salt and pepper, and let boil (without stir- ring) five minutes or until clear; then strain it into a mould that has been rinsed with cold water. EGG AND MILK. Beat the egg separately, and stir the yolk and white together ; fill the tumbler with milk, add loaf sugar to the taste. BEEF JUICE. Put a piece of thick steak on a gridiron over the coals, and when heated sufficiently to free the juice, squeeze it in a lemon squeezer. This is excellent for an invalid. BEEF TEA. One pound of beef. One pint of cold water. Two even teaspoonfuls of salt. The beefshould.be juicy, and free from fat; cut it in bits about an inch square, cover it with the cold water, and let it stand one hour. Put it on the fire, let it heat slowly, and reach the boiling point, then strain, and season to taste. ANOTHER RECIPE.— Cut a pound of tender, juicy beef into small pieces and put it in a wide-mouthed bottle ; cork tight and place it over a slow fire in a kettle of cold water ; heat gradually until it boils ; continue the boiling for several hours until the juice is well drawn from the beef; strain, season with salt, and serve either hot or cold. ARROWROOT. Put a pint of milk over boiling water, reserving a little in which to mix two ounces of arrowroot ; when the milk is scalding add the arrowroot, two and a half ounces of sugar, and a pinch of salt ; stir often, until it is thick as mush, then pour it in a mold. A gruel may be made in ■ the same way with half the quantity of arrowroot, and with or without, sugar. 93 FOR r u IRISH MOSS. Wash two handfuls of carragreen through two or three waters, drain, and pour on it three pints of boiling water ; let it simmer until the moss becomes a pulp, then strain, sweeten to taste, and add the juice of two lemons. To be eaten cold. Milk may be used instead of water. TAPIOCA PORRIDGE. Soak one gill of tapioca several hours, or over night, in two gills of cold water; add a pmt and a half of new milk and let it cook slowly for several hours, over boiling water. It may be seasoned with salt, or with sugar and wine, but it is excellent without either. BARLEY GRUEL. Bpil pearl barley to a pulp ; pass it through a sieve, and add water until of the right consistency ; boil fifteen min- utes and season to suit the taste. BARLEY WATER. Wash pearl barley ; put half an ounce into a quart of boiling water ; let it simmer an hour in a covered sauce- pan, then strain off the liquor ; add sugar and lemon-juice if allowed. RICE OR TAPIOCA JELLY. Wash thoroughly, and if tapioca is used let soak an hour, and boil either until they form a mass, pass through a sieve, season and mold as desired. MUTTON BROTH. A pound and a half of mutton, one quart of cold water, a little salt and two ounces of rice ; simmer for four hours, boil for a few minutes, strain and serve. MILK PUNCH. Beat one egg well with one tablespoonful of sugar, in a tumbler, pour over this one tablespoonful of brandy, fill the tumbler with milk. 94 FOR rot/ GRUEL AND BEEF-TEA. Mix two tablespoonfuls of oatmeal with three table - spoonfuls of cold water, and add a pint of strong beef tea; boil for five minutes, stirring well, to prevent the oatmeal from burning. TO THE HOUSEKEEPER. SPRAY ELECTROZONE with an atomizer having no metal parts. REFRIGERATORS.— Spray and wash the refriger- ator from time to time with Electrozone. It will keep it healthful and sweet. The food need not be removed when spraymg refrigerator. Electrozone contains nothing dangerous or injurious to health. CELLARS. — May be kept free from malaria and noxious gases by sprinkhng occasionally with Electrozone. ASH OR GARBAGE RECEPTACLES should be frequently sprinkled with Electrozone. Decayed vegeta- tion aids in propagating the germs of many diseases. SEWER GASES. — By pouring a little Electrozone in basins, bath tubs, etc., the gases arising from the traps will be entirely decomposed and much sickness prevented. FOR FETID ODORS IN ANY PLACE.— Dilute Electrozone 3 or 4 times with water, and use occasionally. It will instantly remove all foul or disagreeable odors. 95 JNTIDOTES FOR POISONS FIRST. — Send for a physician. It has already been brought to oiir notice that patients taking Meditrina for relief from one or more of the dis- eases mentioned in this book, have at the same time noticed a favorable change and very frequently a cure in some other existing complication previously pronounced chronic or incurable. Such suggestions as we may receive, if they prove to be reliable in all respects, will not only make the later edition of our book still more valuable than the present issue, but will show many sufferers new avenues of escape from con- ditions which have heretofore baffled medical science. Are we asking too much of those who have been bene- fited by the use of Electrozone and Meditrina, if we request them to send us a simple statement of their experience with Meditrina or Electrozone ? Such information as you may give may do much to alleviate or permanently cure the ills of fellow sufferers. If the patient should not find prompt relief in any par- ticular case, or should want more detailed information with regard to treatment or diet, we will gladly furnish such in- formation free of charge. All communications should be addressed to The Chem- ical and Electrical Company, 415 Lexington Avenue, New York City. To insure a prompt reply, enclose an en- velope, stamped, and plainly bearing the address to which the answer should be sent.
