Part I. Flowers, and the sentiments which they represent,. II. Sentiments, and the Flowers which re¬ present them, , . . . . The Dial of Flowers, . Pago. C3 61 INTRODUCTION. The Language of Flora has been traced by its stu¬ dents to widely different sources, each presenting some true claim to the title, yet none so entirely sub¬ verting those of others, as to stand forth alone as its originator ; for truly the origin of this voice of the flowers is co-eval with their creation, and is still a tongue sufficiently simple and attractive to have a charm for every student of nature, and to suggest ap¬ propriate emblems, even to the illiterate rustic, who plucks the way-side daisy, or the blue Forget-me-not, to be presented to some village maiden as the readiest expression of his love. Doubtless, when in the pure and sinless state of our first parents, all living nature were assembled in the Garden of Eden, that the first man, fresh in life and intelligence from the hand of his Creator, should give to each its appropriate name; then also, each lovely flower of the garden received at his hand, the term that most aptly conveyed its nature and properties, and peculiar charm ; and could we now recover that nomenclature, and know each blossom of the field and garden by that name by which it first was known, we should have therein a complete vocabulary of a pure and virtuous floral tongue, such as might suit the state of that happy pair, who then walking fami¬ liarly in the garden adorned and beautified for their pleasure, heard there the voice of their Creator, and held fearless converse with his highest intelligences. It would indeed be wanting in all those emblems, which the sinful passions and feelings of later times iv INTRODUCTION. have called into use ; but whatever is indicative of love or joy, or purity, or unchangeable affection, may at once be referred to that joyous mom, when Adam gave to every new created thing its fitting name; un¬ less, indeed, we rather think that to the first woman, “herself a fairer flower,” was left this graceful and womanly task, and that while Adam gave to the help- mete that was found for him the name of Eve; and she stood admiring by, while in succession, the Lion and Panther, the Leopard and Lamb, each owned his au¬ thority, and received its title; to the naming of the fragrant blossoms, more peculiarly her care, he would call in the aid of his fair partner, and yield to her sug¬ gestions in their emblematical names. But the voca¬ bulary of Eden, we have said, would be wanting in all the symbols of our angry passions—to later times, alas! must be referred the emblems of jealousy, fear, and the like evil emotions which have been the fruitful experience of successive ages, and have marred, like a canker-worm in the rosebud, the sweet blossoms of affection springing up in the human breast. We would thus trace the origin of this sweet natural poetry to the purity of primeval times; nor is it as a mere fanciful conceit that we do so. The language is, in truth, no creature of modem art, but the free-bom child of unsophisticated nature. “ Lovely as the rose,” “ fair as the lily,” or “ modest as the violet,” are phrases that seem to come naturally into use, without thought that in this emblematic employment lies the germ of true poetry, and the symbolic language of Flora; j and though to these will be found added, in the pre- | sent volume, many wherein the object seems less sug¬ gestive of the sense, and where the idea sought to be con¬ veyed is more complex and difficult intelligently to JNTROPI/CTION. symbolize, yet in this is only presented the floral tongue, passing through the same progressive stages that have characterized the annals of every spoken language. In a rude and primitive state, the words are few and simple that suffice to clothe in language the thoughts and de¬ sires of an untutored race of men ; but with every in¬ creasing want, and every new desire, names and forms of thought must be created, until the brief vocabulary of the savage tribe swells into the complex dictionary of an intelligent and civilized people. And so has it been with this universal language. “ He cometh forth as a flower and is cut down,” is the expressive and universally intelligent language of Scripture; and no less does it early prefigure hope than frailty. We strew them over the shroud of departed love, and plant them to bloom brightly above the grave, that they may speak in Spring of a brighter season of hope, and in Sum* mer of that heavenly clime that knows only of an eternal summer and a cloudless sky, and in all sea¬ sons, of love, and purity, and peace. To these the simple expressions of natural feeling, have been added from time to time, from the pages of classic poetry, and the more complex fancies of later writers, a series of ideas attached to every flower, by means of which the nosegay iftay be made to take the place of more formal epistles, and spread forth its lovely blossoms, and breathe out its fragrant odour, to whisper the sweet tale of the lover, and plead his cause to his mistress’s ear ; while, should clouds mar the sunshine of his young passion, and demand other tokens than the gentle ones of love to express his feelings, he may still have recourse to the same sweet petals, and renew again, in different guise, the ancient strife of the “ wars of the roses. * VI INTRODUCTION. For the more complicated uses of this beautiful lan¬ guage, a few hints may be necessary to shew how ex¬ tensive is the range of thought its alphabet may communicate. For example, if a flower be given reversed, it implies the opposite of that thought or senti¬ ment which it is ordinarily understood to express ; again, a rosebud, from which the thorns have been removed, but which has still its leaves, conveys the sentiment, “ I fear, but I hope,”—the thorns implying fear, as the leaves hope; remove the leaves and thorns, and then it signifies that “ there may be neither hope nor fear while, again, a single flower may be made emblematical of a variety of ideas ; a rosebud that has been already used and deprived of its thorns, says, “ There is much to hope,” but stript of its leaves also, it tells “ There is every thing to fear.” The expression also of almost any flower may be varied by changing its position. Place the marigold upon the head, for in¬ stance, and it signifies “ distress of mind”—on the heart, “ the pangs of love”—on the bosom, “ listlessness.” And, it may be added, when a flower is given, the pro¬ noun I is understood by changing it to the right, thou by inclining it to the left. To the intelligent reader, these suggestions may suf¬ fice, and we shall therefore conclude our introduction, with the hope, that under the guidance of this little volume, many a bright nosegay may exchange hands, and tell in its fitting and intelligent language, “ a wel¬ come message to fair lady’s ear.” Castle Bams , July 1845. By the opening and the folding flowers. That laugh to the summer’s day. Thus had each moment its own rich hue, And its graceful cup and bell. In whose coloured vase might sleep the dew. Like the pearl in an ocean-shell. To such sweet signs might the time have flowed In a golden current on. Ere from the garden, man’s first abode. The glorious guests were gone. So might the days have been brightly told— Those days of songs and dreams,— When shepherds gathered their flocks of old By the blue Arcadian streams. So in those isles of delight, that rest Far off in a breezeless main. Which many a bark, with a weary guest. Has sought, but still in vain. 52 THE FLOWER-DIAL. Yet is not life, in its real flight, Marked thus—even thus—on earth. By the closing of one hope’s delight, And another’s gentle birth ? Oh! let us live, so that flower by flower, Shutting in turn, may leave A lingerer still for the sun-set hour— A charm for the shaded eve. HEMAN8. DIAL OF FLOWERS, TIME OF OPENING. H. M.
