The present collection shows the freshness of vision and intensity of expression of at least one branch of the modern school in China. The Chinese written charac- ters being essentially pictorial in origin, and not letters, writ- ing remains in a real sense illustration of objects seen rather than sjmibols of sound, — calligraphy, or beautiful writing, falls within the sphere of the artist quite as much as pictorial representation; and therefore, both are practiced and ap- preciated side by side in much the same spirit. 53.
