SHREWSBURY: L. WILDING, PRINTER AND' STATIONER, 33 CASTLE STREET. h.!Lt^$\$ PREFACE. J HE following Calendar of the Muniments and Kecords of the Borough of Shrewsbury has been compiled by a Special Committee appointed by the Finance Committee of the Corporation at a Meeting held 5th February, 1889. The constitution of this Committee afterwards underwent several changes owing to the retirement of some members and the addition of others. The Committee met at the Guildhall every Tuesday, with few intermissions, for a period of upwards of five years, until the Calendar was finally completed. They carefully examined the whole of the Eecords prior to the year 1837, and cleaned them, tied them up in brown paper packages, sorted and classified them, attaching a label of contents and date to each package. They also arranged them in 78 tin boxes, and made the Calendar of the whole, which is now printed. It may, perhaps, be mentioned, that soon after the rough draft of the Calendar was completed, it was submitted, unofficially, to some members of the Royal Archaeological Institute of Great Britain, which met in July, 1894, at Shrewsbury, and that the principle of arrangement received their approval. On the 16th of June, 1894, the Committee presented a Report of their work to the Mayor and Corporation, and suggested, among other things that the MS. Calendar they had prepared should be printed, that additional iron frame-work to hold the boxes should be made, and the contents of each box be plainly painted on its front. The Report was in due course adopted by the Corporation, and the suggestions of the Committee were ordered to be carried out. At the invitation of the Corporation, the Historical MSS. Commissioners sent down the Eev. W. D. Macray, of Oxford, to examine and report upon the Records. Mr. Macray commenced his work on the 30th of April, 1895, but his Report has not yet been printed by the Commissioners. The Committee can scarcely hope that the Calendar is absolutely free from mistakes. And being the work of several, documents of the same class are sometimes variously described : e.g. Bailiffs' Accounts are in some instances simply so called, and in others " Stallage and Murage, etc." ; and under Court Rolls the same class of documents are described as " Curia Magna," " Great Court," " Rot. Mag. Cur. etc." according to the judgment of the individual worker. But the Committee believe that their classification is in the main correct, and that there will be now no difficulty in getting a clue to the contents of each document. Since the preparation of the Calendar, the packages have all been numbered consecutively from 1 to 2798, by two of the Com- mittee, in order to facilitate readiness of access to the Records. Any document can now be found in a few minutes, by simply giving the number it bears. The power of giving permission to see the Records rests with the Town Clerk alone, to whom application must in every case be made. W. PHILLIPS, f.l.s. v E. CALVERT, ll.b. For ^ T. AUDEN, f.b.a.
