They are valued by me, not only for what they contain, but because of the fact that they were written the first and second days after my birth, and that from Uncle Wilbur was the last letter that he ever wrote, having died of typhoid fever seventeen days after. E-. M. S. ' ' Steamer State op Maine, Fortress Monroe, Va., Aug. 14, 1862. Dear Father : — You will doubtless be surprised at the heading of this letter, but nevertheless it is so. I have been on board since the 31st of July. I had a good situation in the hospital in West Philadelphia, but like this better. We are now steaming up the James river at about fifteen miles an hour. We are now about three hours out of Fortress Monroe, where we took on 1,000 rebel prisoners from Fort Delaware, whom we will take up to Eakin's Landing and exchange them for Union prisoners. On our last trip among the exchanges were Miner Britton, a fellow by the name of Long, from Rcss twp. and another named Green. Among the rebel prisoners were Generals Petigrew and Mitchel. Among the Union prisoners there were 300 sick and wounded, which we took to Philadelphia. We will be at Harrison's Landing at three o'clock this P. M., if nothing happens, and there I expect to see all of the men from our place who enlisted in Harvey's Company. I was in their camp recently and saw J. B. Laycock, John Robinson, the Dodson boys, R. Buckalew, Oscar Buckalew, and all who enlisted from Huntington, Ross and Fairmount. I took supper with the Captain, Major, and Lieutenant John Robinson; also J. B. Laycock; I think he holds some ofiice. I also saw Charles Bowman, he is well and hearty as a woodchuck. If you pass Town Hill please leave word that I saw him. I expect to see him again in the course of the evening. Well we laid at the Landing all night, took on 541 sick men and are now steaming down the river again. I was so unwell that I did not go up to the camp. You will want to know about the war : There are few things that I can tell you, we are not let into the secrets and never know what is coming next. Sometimes they are marched for two or three days in succes- sion, not knowing where they are going until they come into the old camp again. This is called " hardening them for the service." This " hardening " makes many a widow and orphan. Father, you don't know anything about war, nor the effects of it. When I came to Phila. my heart sank when I saw the suffering of some of the poor fellows, but it prepared me for my present position. (He was ass't. surgeon.) 105 I wish I might have the time to tell you of all of the places of historic interest which I have visited down here, like the old church in Jamestown, where Pocohontas was baptized and married, Fort Powhattan, where Capt. Smith was taken prisoner, &c., &c.; but I haven't time for any more and if you can read what I have written since coming into rough water you can beat me. Ever your affectionate son, W. R. SANTEE." (i394-) Staten Island, Aug. 15, 1862. Dear Brother and Sister: — You will be somewhat surprised, I have no doubt, when you receive this and learn of my situation. I am somewhat surprised myself, but it is on account of the situation of affairs in our country. This is a trying time, and every single man should turn out and fight in our glorious cause. I left Dixon in company with a number of acquaint- ances to join an artillery company in Chicago. On arriving there we found the company full. We then joined the Burnside Expedition. This was on the nth day of Aug., and on the evening of the same day we started for the City of N. Y., and after a tiresome journey arrived there Thursday after- noon. We had to march some miles in the city. There was about one hun- dred men from Chicago with us who stole almost everything they could get their hands on and the poor old women with their store of fruit on some cor- ner could be heard yelling at the soldiers while barrels and boxes were tumbled into the street. I felt mortified to think that I had to pass through this great City to be gazed upon by thousands of people who, as a matter of course, would see little else of us than the tricks of the miserables. We ar- rived at the ferry at last arid a steamboat took us to this island. We were then marched into quarters in the camping ground. This camping ground is an elevated piece of land on the sea shore. The quarters is a large brick building four stories high with the eating room on the second and the sleeping room on the third floor. At supper time we were summoned to the table by the sound of the drum. Our table consisted of a pine floor with a dirt cover. The boys very unceremoniously seated themselves on the table with their legs spread out in the shape of a Pennsylvania stump drag. The supper, which consisted of bread and coffee, was then passed round and each fellow took his mess be- tween his legs and supped at will. It was a novel time to us all and each had his remark which was responded to by uproarious laughter. After eat- ing supper and having bapsoused ourselves in the ocean we betook ourselves to bed. The bed consists of an iron bedstead with a straw tick but no blank- ets, they being kept by themselves and dealt out every night. The whole garrison is called into line and then marched by twos, each couple receiving one blanket. This is on account of their scarcity. After we had our blank- ets we went to bed and a very noisy crew we were. On account of the noise continuing too long an ofiicer came up stairs and very angrily told us that if we did not stop our noise we would be sent to the guard house and double ironed. In a short time there was considerable snoring. This morning the breakfast was the same as supper. At dinner we had a greater variety. We stay here until Sunday next when we start for Newberne, North Caro- lina. We get $1.8 per month, and allowed $1.80 per month if we omit whiskey and $1.50 per month if we use no tobacco, making $21.30 per month and considerable bounty besides. I will write when I get to New- berne and give you my address. 'Till then adieu. Yours in heart, John and I^izzie and Emory. WILEARD. The following account of the Re-union is clipped from an Ohio paper, through the courtesy of 2805: The annual re-union of the Santee fam- ily and their connections was held Satur- day, Aug. s, 1899, at the residence of W. R. Santee, Snodes, O. Fifty-eight mem- bers were present. After serving an ex- cellent dinner a short program was gone through. The poem which follows was received and read to the delight of all. Several oiher communications from ab- sent m.'mbers were read by the Secretary. One of the interesting features of the day was the genealogy, published by Dr. Ellis .M. Sintee, of Cortland, N. Y. This contains, in a tabulated form, about 3000 names in the U. S. Dr. Kllis M. Santee WIS present and made some appropriate remarks. The book contained some er- rors which all aided in correcting. We cm not spc-ak in too high terms of the usefulness and pleasure this book affords. The society voteil him a vote of thanks and wished much success in the future ■perfection (jf the genealogy. Officers were elected for the following year as fo.llows: President, .^William Santee (2S36) Secretary. Eva Santee (wife of 2805) Treasurer, Leon B. Santee (2805.)
