In issuing the. first part of "The Aberdeen Printers," I embrace the opportunity of writing a few words of thanks to the large number of subscribers who replied to the Prospectus, ^nd rendered possible the publication of the work. Out of one hundred and twenty-eight titles of books given in this part, eighty-four have been examined by myself. They can be readily distinguished by the perpendicular bars which indicate the arrangement of the titlepages into lin^s. The Library in which these books are to be found is. invariably given at the end of each entry. The enti-ies in which bars do not occur are taken from Bibliographical Works, Library Catalogues, Sale Catalogues, or casual references in books, but in every case the authority for the title is acknowledged. I shall always regret that it was out of -my power to examine the large collection of " Rabans " in Dr. Laing's Library, and should this come under iv. Introductory Note. the notice of the present possessors of any of the books with the too frequent note, " Dr. David Laing's Sale , Catalogue," I shall be obliged if they will communicate with me. Any information regarding Aberdeen Printing or Printers will be gladly welcomed, and use will be made of such in the concluding part. In order to avoid the continual recurrence of the terms recto and verso in the collations, I have used small " superior " figures placed to the right above the larger figures that indicate the leaf of the sheet or signature, Thus — A I' = recto of A i j A i= = verso of A i. I reserve the acknowledgment of assistance from many kind friends until the conclusion of my labours. J. P. EDMOND, 64, Bon-Accord Street, Aberdeen. THE ABERDEEN PRINTERS. It may bee (Gentle Reader) that you thinke the Price of this Booke too much for so little a Volume ; yet if you will consider the Causes wherefore it must bee so, you will allow thereof the better, which bee foure : First, because hee who selleth it, intendeth, God willing, to bee readie and present, or one in his name,, whensoever it shall please you to inquire for the same : for it is better to sell in such sort, as he who selleth may Hue, and keepe the Town, nor at so low a rate, as he must leave the same, and disappoint you, when you aske for such a one as is not to bee found. Secondlie, if you reade this Booke orderlie, and diligentlie, from the beginning, unto this place, I hope you will not finde it deare neyther, but within the value. Thirdlie, though it were otherwise, it may not bee solde anie cheaper at this first Impression : because there is but a few Printed, for an essay, upon an haste, and by guesse, as it were ; partly since it is the Authors first Travels, and partly in respect of the tedious writing of so manie Characters, and much Writ, upon each Booke, after the Imprinting of the matter thereof. And fourthlie, because the Author maintayneth two or three daylie to fill up, and write in, all the foresayd Exemplare Letters and Words, in everie Extract, which is no small travell and charges, in comparison of those Bookes which have nothing in them, but such as is set downe, and printed all at ones, with one travell. But indeed within few yeares, God willing, when this Impression is solde, and newe Types bought, to supplie the travels nowe made with the Penne, and the Booke reformed, and Printed the seconde time, then it may perhaps bee solde at a farre lower rate, though much better of it selfe : to the which time, I entreate you to haue patience, and bee content with it as it is, and not Edward Raban, 1622. 7 only dispence with any apparent Dearth thereof now, but also excuse any fault you finde eyther in the Author in downe-setting, and correcting ; or in Mee, in the Imprinting : and then I hope we shall please you better both in Travels and Price. Instead of flowers and Grasse so green, The Earth hath got another hew ; Frost, snow, and durtie Dales are sceene Where pleasant plants most fruitfull grew ; Childhood, cold reume, and phlegmatic state Of winter's cold nature doeth best relate. . . . The inconveniences which most commonly attond this Winter Quarter are Shipwrackes and great Sicknesses, both on Sea and Land, proceeding of raw Phlegmaticke, and in-digested blood, or superfluitie of corrupt, rotten, and putrified humours, causing uncouth and strange- fitted Fevers, unmannerly Coghs, obstructions of the Lunges, and an unknowne paine in the Breast, Backe and Loynes. Where-fore, for to prevent such Griefs, Vse Meats both warm and drye ; Both Head and Feete see warm thou keepe ; Eate much ; drinke sparingly. Edward Raban, 162 j. 1 1 The Second Quarter called The Spring. Most welcome is the fruitful spring To creatures all that multiplie ; Both Beasts and Birds doe skip and sing, In flocking sorte aboundantlie. In sanguine men and youthfull yeares This seasons nature best appears. Now the beautifuU Sunne, having shaken off the dabling drops of the watry Winter from its glorious beams, cometh foorth, and up-on the nth of March maketh the day and night of equall length. This season is naturally bote and moist, like unto youth ; and is the most wholesome part of the Year ; nothing apt to breede anie diseases ; but will perhaps bring foorth such as are bred alreadie in the bodies of men and women, especiallie in the secret parts : there-fore, beware wee Leachers. . . Summer. — Bright Sol, having got its highest grade, Lookes downe on Earth with hot aspect ; Parching the Ground and Cornie Blade ; Rypning all things with good effect ; Fierce, cholericke men and middle age Of Summer's nature doe presage. Crooked olde Age, Humour, Melancholie Will Harvest's nature trulie verifie. . . . This is sayd to be an unwholesome season, and according to natures operation, is cold and dry. The diseases are lyke to be manyfolde ; but especiallie the Pennie-lesse paine in the Pursse, shall cause much Heart-ache, and many Widows to be left though their husbands alive, which the Germans call Onbestorveri Weduwen. The running title is The Historie of Bevis of Hampton. The only copy known of this edition is that in the Huth Library. It was purchased at the Sale of Edzvard Rabati, i6jo. 33 Mr. George Daniel's Library, in July, 1864, for the sum of ;£'2I, It bears the following MS. note by Mr. Daniel, written in 1838: — "An edition of extraordinary rarity of this ancient metrical Romance. I cannot trace another copy in any catalogue, nor have I found a collector or bookseller, who ever saw one . . . This copy was purchased by a Stationer's. Traveller in Aberdeen, and sold to me. " Through the kindness of Dr. Webster, M.P., I am permitted to print a letter to him from the late Dr. David Laing, relating to this very rare volume : — Signet Library. Edinburgh. Sept. 27, 1864. Dear Sir, On returning home from wandering about I received your letter of the 20th ult. It so happened I was in London during part of Daniel's Sale, but was too late to see either the Sir Bevis of Hampton, or the Black Letter Ballads sold. I also had cast a longing eye on the former, but knowing that it was all but hopeless the chance of getting it, I wrote to ascertain how far it cor- responded with the English Version, of which a copy was in the same sale. As Raban's edition proved to be a modernized copy of the old English Metrical Romance, it had little intrinsic value. I had seen the book many years ago in Mr. Daniel's possession, and as a typographical curiosity, it would have been a desirable acquisition, and no other copy is known. If I remember, he told me it cost him a guinea, having been picked up at Aberdeen for one shilling. The books at that sale have fetched most preposterous prices. Yours very truly, D. The Psalter to which they belonged formed part of the Montague bequest. In Lea Wilson's Catalogue, p. 249, a copy is described as 18°, which I have little doubt is the same edition as this. Bodleian Library, Oxford. WEDDERBURNE, David. A Short Introduction to Grammar. Aberdeen. 1632. 8°. Dr. Joseph Robertson in his sketch of Wedderburne's Life and Writings in the " Collections for a History of the Shires of Aberdeen and Banff," p. 62, gives the above on the authority of Ruddiman's Bibliotheca Romana, Edinb., 1757, 8°., p. 62. This is an earlier edition of the one described below, printed in 1637, but as yet I have failed to trace a copy dated 1632. Edward Raban, i6j2. 43 The great trouble Wedderbume experienced in the publication of his grammar, as will be seen from the following extracts, arose out of, an order of certain commissioners appointed by Parliament. In l6l2 it was ordained by these commissioners that the Grammatica Nova of Alexander Hume be used exclusively in the schools of Scotland. In consequence of this, we find in the Council Register of Aberdeen, that on the fourteenth of July, 1630, "the prouest, baillies, and counsall ordaines the soume of fourtie pundis to be given to Mr. Dauid Wedderbume, maister of the Grammer schole, for making his chairges to Edinburgh, being chairgeit to compeir befor the Lordis of Privie Counsall, anent the new grammer , set out be Mr. Alexander Hume, quhilk soume they ordaine to be peyit to the said Mr. Dauid, be Robert Skeine, thesaurer, and the same to be allowit to him in his comptis." [Extracts from the Records of the Burgh of Aberdeen, 1625-1642, p. 29.] Wedderbume on that occasion requested permission to print his own Grammar, but it does not appear to have been granted, for, on the first of December, 1630, "the prouest, baillies, and counsell haveand con- sideratioun that the new grammer laitlie reformed be Mr. David Wedderbume, maister of the grammer schuile of this burghe, can nather be printit nor publishit for the vse of yong sholares, whome the same concernis, vnto the tyme the same resaive approbatioune from the Lordis of Counsall : thairfoir thay have fhocht meit and expedient that the said Mr. David address himself with the said wark to Edinburgh, in all convenient diligence for procuring the saidis Lordis thair approbatioun thairto, and ordaines the soume of ane hundreth pundis money to be debursit to him be the tounes thesaurer for making of his expenssis in the said erand." [Extracts from the Records of the Burgh of Aberdeen, 1625-1642, p. 32.] The required approbation was difficult to "purches," for on the thirtieth of March, 1631, the town council "gives and grantis to Mr. David Wedderbume, maister of thair grammer schole, the soume of ane hundreth merkis money to help to defray the greit chairges quhairin he hes bein drawin be his long attendance in Edinburgh, Sanct- andrews, and Glasgow, in the purches and obteining of the councel and clergies of this kingdome, thair approbatioun and allowance to his new reformed grammer, to be payit to him be Alex. Stewart, thesaurer, quhilk soume they ordane to be allowit to the said thesaurer in his comptis. '' [Extracts from the Records of the Burgh of Aberdeen, 1625-1642, p. 35.] At last the book was printed and published, for we learn from another entry in the Council Register, that on the twelfth of September, 1632, "the prouest, baillies, and counsall, givis and grantis to Mr Dauid Wedderbume, maister of the grammer schole of this burghe, the soume 44 The Aberdeen Printers. of twa hundreth merkis Scottis money, for printing of the new grammer laitlie set out be him be resone of his dedicatioun of the same to the magistrattis and counsall, whilk soume they ordaine to be payit to the said Mr Dauid be George Moresone, deane of gild, and the same to be allowit to the said deane of gild in his comptis." [Extracts from the Records of the Burgh of Aberdeen, 1625-1642, p. 50.] Not contented with permission to use the Grammar in his native city, we find him trying to obtain the same monopoly for his work which had been granted to Hume's Grammar. On the twenty-eighth of June, 1633, the parliament referred to a committee of the lords of the privy council, "ane petitioun givin in be Maister Dauid Wedderbume Maister of the Grammer Skoole of Abirdeine.desyring that the Short and Facile Grammer drawn vp be him and his paines may be allowit and ordanit to be taucht vniuersallie through all the skooles of the kingdome of Scotland and all vthers grammers dischargit to be taught withine the samyne." [Acts of the Parliaments of Scotland, Vol. V., p. 48, Thomson's edition.] The following entries in the Accounts of the Burgh of Aberdeen refer to the orders of the Town Council quoted above. [Miscellany of the Spalding Club, Vol. V., pp. 148, 149, 104.] 1630-1631.
