S. PIONEER GOLD COINS U. S. 1 PATTERN PIECES POLITICAL MEDALS INDIAN PEACE MEDALS ASSAY MEDALS EXTREMELY FINE CENTS AND HALF CENTS OF CAPTAIN ANDREW C. ZABRISKIE NEW YORK CITY* CATALOGUED BY HENRY CHAPMAN NUMISMATIST NO. 1348 PINE STREET PHILADELPHIA AND TO BE SOLD BY MESSRS. DAVIS & HARVEY AUCTIONEERS NO. I 1 12 WALNUT STREET PHILADELPHIA THURSDAY AND FRIDAY JUNE 3 AND 4. 1909 COMMENCING EACH DAY AT 2 O'CLOCK. P. M. PREFACE Captain Andrew C. Zabriskie, Ex-President of the American Numismatic Society of New York City, is probably one of the oldest, in point of years interested, collectors in the United States, and it was an honor to be commissioned by him to disperse his fine collection — and that at public auction to the highest bidder. In pursuance of this order I have endeavored to prepare a catalogue fairly describing the coins in the collection, setting forth their devices, condition of preservation and rarity, as it appears to me, and I trust those who favor the sale by their presence, or who buy through agents, will agree with me in the statements set forth. There will be found, on a careful perusal of the following pages, that many extraordinary coins are here offered ; for see the rarities to be sold. Firstly, of paramount importance, is the magnificent 1787 NEW YORK BRASHER DOUBLOON, almost as fine as the one which made the world's record price for a single coin, either at public or private sale ! Think of it ! and I am glad to say it was in the United States. Then, the Granby Coppers (9), the great rarities of New York Cents, 1786 ; Non Vi Virtute Vici, 1787 ; Lib- ernatus Libertatum Defendo; the 1792 Washington Half Dollar in its right metal, silver; rare Washington Medals; fine line of Pattern Pieces. Capt. Zabriskie some years ago had the good fortune to purchase from his executors the collection of coins left by Mr. Humbert, the California Assayer, and from which collection he derived many of the most remarkable of his Pioneer Gold Coins, which, added to his collection that had been forming for many years, makes his Pioneer Gold the best ever offered at public sale, containing some of the greatest rarities, as well as many but seldom obtainable. Note the Cincinnati Mining & IV PREFACE. Trading Co., flO; J. S. Ormsby, $10; Kellogg & Co., 1855 $50, round; Wass, Molitor & Co., $50, round; Moffat $16 ingot; Oregon $10; Bechtler $5; with assayer; Pelican $2^; Bowie $1; superb $50's; Mormon Coins, complete set; Clark, Gruber & Co., $20; 1860 Pikes Peak, etc., etc. In fact, to enumerate all the rare and desirable coins would take up too much space for a Preface, and I respectfully request Collectors receiving this Catalogue to peruse it carefully, send in their bids early, and, if possible, at- tend the sale personally. Thanking you for your support in the past, and trusting I may merit a continuance of your orders, I remain, Very respectfully, HENKY CHAPMAN, Numismatist. No. 1348 Pine Street, Philadelphia. TERMS OF SALE, NOTICE. AND INFORMATION TO BIDDERS Coins, etc., for the day's sale are on exhibition in the Art Gal- lery, second floor, from 9.30 A. M. to 1 P. M. No coins are shown during progress of the sale, except by courtesy of the Auction- eer. It is particularly requested that would-be purchasers examine the several lots during the Exhibition, mark in their catalogue what they are willing to pay, and when sale begins they are pre- pared to make their offers — this is almost necessary, for there is little time when the lot is up, selling, as we do, some 200 to 250 lots per hour. Mr. Nirnrod Harvey is an excellent auctioneer, and if you want a lot, attract his attention and he will take the bid offered. He allows time on each lot, but no time is wasted — it is business from the start, and the sale progresses rapidly and satisfactorily to all. Sale begins each day at 2 P. M. Terms of the sale are cash before delivery, but collectors bidding through me, who have established their credit and responsibility, will have their goods forwarded quickly after the sale, and from such prompt settlement is requested. I make the regular and usual charge of 10% for executing bids. No charge is made unless goods are bought. Postage or expressage is paid by the purchaser. No lot is divided. Sold so much per piece, except proof sets, which are sold by lot. Coins, etc., are guaranteed genuine, and this holds good in- definitely. The auctioneer reserves the right to require a deposit from a bidder if he deems it advisable. The highest bidder to be the buyer, and should a dispute arise between bidders, said lot in dispute is to be immediately resold; provided the contesting bidder has a voucher as to his having made his bid prior to its being knocked down; and, also, that he starts the new bidding by advancing the price for which it had just been knocked down. Mr. Harvey takes care to get the bids in, but it is sometimes difficult for any one to clearly dis- VI NOTICE AND INFORMATION. tinguish secret or silent signal given. It is therefore desirable that persons making a bid do so in an audible voice. Carefully compare and revise your bid sheet before dispatching. Bids on wrong numbers are not the seller's fault, and are not returnable on this account. It is my wish to please and treat fairly everybody, and I believe my descriptions will be found cor- rect, the coins fully meet the catalogue; but here permit me to say that "fine" is not "extremely fine"; some bidders have re- turned lots saying "I wanted it uncirculated", "extremely fine", etc., when no such state of preservation was quoted in the cat- alogue — so bid on the lots as they are described — they will meet the qualifications given, but in justice to all I endeavor not to under or over-describe — the seller's and buyer's rights are equal in my eyes. Of the greatest rarity, about three known like this and the one in my sale of June 17- 18, 1908, sold for $3,000, but it had a plain edge and was unique with that edge. The present specimen came from a sale held by Woodward some twenty-five years ago. See plate. KELLOGG & CO., SAN FRANCISCO. 336 1854 $20. Edge, milled. Uncirculated, brilliant, practically a proof. Struck under an Act of Congress passed in 1850, authorizing the Secretary of the Treasury to arrange with a well established as- sayer of San Francisco to refine the gold, run it into ingots, plac- ing thereon the fineness and value in dollars and cents. This to be done under the supervision of a Government official, who was to place his official stamp upon said ingots. The assaying establishment of Moffatt & Co. was selected, and a contract entered into with them by the Secretary. Augustus Humbert was appointed U. S. Assayer to place his stamp on all the ingots issued. The placing of the assayer's name on the die, thus each coin struck having his name, obviated his "placing his stamp on all ingots issued." U. S. PIONEER GOLD COINS — AUGUSTUS HUMBERT. 37 Early in 1852, Moffatt & Co. dissolved, the other members of the firm, reorganized under the title of Curtis, Perry & Ward, succeeding to the Government contract, Augustus Humbert re- maining with them in the capacity of U. S. Assayer, and the change of the wording from the individual to the United States Assayer took place, and Humbert remained with them until 1853, when the office closed, the latter part of the year, after which he became a member of one of the most important of the California private coining firms. 352 1851 $50.
