Catalogue of the Carlyle Collection DR. SAMUEL A. JONES UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN A Catalogue of The Dr. Samuel A. Jones Carlyle Collection With Additions From the General Library COMPILED BT MARY EUNICE WEAD Assistant Curator of Rare Books W'idr\io,ou^ , V\r\uevs(Tj • ^-^ n/q ^-m UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN ANN ARBOR 1919 /v^^nn PREFATORY NOTE Dr. Samuel A. Jones . Samuel Arthur Jones was born of Welsh ancestry in Manchester, England, June 11, 1834. His parents emi- grated to America in 1842 and settled in Central New York. The boy was prepared for college at the Utica Free Academy, and, later, read Medicine in Utica with Dr. W. H. Watson. In 1860 he was graduated M.D. from the Missouri Homoeopathic Medical College, at St. Louis. He then proceeded to Philadelphia and in 1861 was graduated at the Homoeopathic Medical College of Pennsylvania. In 1862 he entered the United States Service as First Assistant Surgeon of the Twenty-second New Jersey Infantry. Later, he was Assistant Surgeon of the Twenty-second Regiment of the New York State National Guard. In 1865 he was Secretary of the Ameri- can Microscopical Society of New York. In 1870 he became Professor of Histology in the New York Homoeo- pathic Medical College and in 1872 a member of the New York State Board of Medical Examiners. In 1875 he was called to Ann Arbor to organize the newly founded Homoeopathic Medical College of the University of Mich- igan, where he served as Dean and Professor for the next five years. On his resignation of this position, he took up the active practice of medicine in Ann Arbor, where he continued to reside for the remainder of his life— a period of more than thirty years. It was during this final period that he found leisure for enriching his private library and indulging in the literary Vi CATALOGUE OF THE CARLYLE COLLECTION activities so dear to him. The subjects most congenial to his mind were those which had to do with the great issues of life— ethical, social, religious. Of an ardent and sympathetic temperament, and an independent and ag- gressive spirit, he was instinctively drawn to those au- thors who gave voice to his own soul in a great way. For a number of years Carlyle took the first place; then by a natural transition, Emerson, Thoreau, Lowell, Whittier, and others. In the later years Thoreau perhaps more than any other engrossed him, and his published work had chiefly to do with the elucidation and defence of that singular genius. Along with his passion for great writings that lifted him above the sordid earth, and gave him comfort and hope in life, went the passion of a book lover. And so he became a book collector. He delighted in bringing to- gether on his own shelves the original editions of his fav- orite authors and all illustrative matter bearing on them. The successful quest of these treasures gave him exquisite pleasure. The fly leaves of his books contain many valu- able bibliographical notes on the history of these "finds." He loved to entertain his friends with accounts of his triumphs in this field, and on occasion would set out a friendly glass in celebration of some special event. He was a captivating raconteur, and his library was a privi- leged resort of the lovers of books, old and young. He specially welcomed the visits of the young people of the University who sought his aid and advice in their liter- ary researches. By special invitation he gave many talks before the Literary societies of the University and the classes in literature. After his death (March 9, 1912) the University made overtures to the family for the purchase of the Carlyle Collection en bloc. Dr. Jones's wish that this particular collection, which had cost so much patient labor, should PREFATORY NOTE VU not be dispersed, was well known; and satisfactory terms were readily agreed upon. The entire collection now rests securely upon the shelves of the General Library, where it will be open for the use of scholars for the genera- tions to come — in perpetuum. Isaac N. Dear Sir, Unless Dell is mentioned in Calamy's Abridgement (Cat- alogue of Divines ejected in 1662), I rather think there will be no express Life of him anywhere discoverable. But he appears frequently in the old Pamphlets; in Baxter's Life are two notices of him, two in Wood's Fasti; and old Sermons of his, preached before the House of Commons, are still to bG met with on the Book-stalls, and doubtless in much better condition in the Bodleian Library. I have got one here, — for Monthly Fast-day 26 Nov r 1646,— on "Reformation of the Church;" which, if at any time you cared to take so much trouble, I could very willingly lend you. I remain always Yours sincerely T. Carlyle. (J) Mr Miller, who is now about removing to a better post, has served, these last Eight years, in the London Library, as one of the Clerks there; and, I have reason to believe, has proved himself uniformly an amiable, punctual, polite, diligent and intelligent young man; giving great satisfaction to his Employers. Whatever I, for my part, have happened to know of him is to his ad- vantage. T. Carlyle. 5 Gr* Cheyne Row, Chelsea, 6 Feb* 1860. Envelope addressed Mr Miller London Library 12. St James's Square (J)
