 Eliadah Grand Lodge of Perfection, 
 
 The members of Ei<iadah lyODGE of Perfection, of the 
 Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, working in 
 the city of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and state of Ohio, 
 under authority of a warrant granted by the Supreme Coun- 
 cil of Sovereign Grand Inspectors General of the 33d degree for 
 the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, United States of America, 
 bearing date May 19th, 1866, corresponding to the fifth day of the 
 Hebrew month Sivan, 5626, do make and establish the following 
 by-laws for the government of said lodge. 
 
 ARTICI^E I. 
 
 officers. 
 
 The officers of this lodge shall, in accordance with ancient 
 usages, and the constitutions of the Supreme Council, be styled 
 and take rank as follows : 
 
 1. Thrice Potent Grand Master. 
 
 2. Hiram of Tyre, Deputy Grand Master. 
 
 3. Venerable Senior Grand Warden. 
 
 4. Venerable Junior Grand Warden.

 All of whom shall be elected annually at the stated meeting 
 on or next preceding the third day of the Hebrew month Adar, 
 and installed within one calendar month thereafter. 
 
 The duties of the officers respectively shall be such as are 
 required by the laws and usages of the Ancient Accepted 
 Scottish Rite. 
 
 ARTICI.E II. 
 
 MEETINGS. 
 
 The stated meetings of this lodge shall be the first and fourth 
 Fridays of each month, and from October to April shall convene 
 at 7:30 o'clock, and from April to October at 8 o'clock, p. m. 
 
 All meetings designated as Re-unions, due notice of which 
 shall have been given, shall be deemed regular meetings for the 
 transaction of any business regularly brought before them. 
 Special meetings may be called for the transaction of business 
 at the pleasure of the Thrice Potent Grand Master, or, in his 
 absence, by the Deputy Grand Master, due notice of which shall 
 be given by mail or otherwise to all resident members, and to 
 non-residents should the business be of more than ordinary or 
 usual importance. 
 
 ARTICI^E III.

 The order of business at regular meetings should be : 
 
 ist. Reading the minutes. 
 
 2d. Reading and referring petitions. 
 
 3d. Reports of committees. 
 
 4th. Balloting for candidates.

 ARTICLK IV. 
 
 DEGREES AND MEMBERSHIP. 
 
 All applications for the degrees conferred in this lodge, or for 
 membership, shall be in the form prescribed by the Supreme 
 Council, signed by the applicant, and recommended by at least 
 one member of the lodge ; shall be presented at a stated meeting, 
 and, if received, be referred to a committee of three members for 
 inquiry and repprt, and shall lie over, at least until the next

 stated meeting before balloting thereon; provided, however, 
 that in such instances as may be considered cases of emergency, 
 by unanimous consent of the members present, and the proper 
 authority having been obtained from the Deputy of the Supreme 
 Council, petitions may be received and action had thereon at 
 any stated or called meeting of the lodge. 
 
 A unanimous vote shall be necessary to elect for degrees or 
 for membership ; and in no case shall a ballot be taken until the 
 required fee shall be in actual deposit. 
 
 In the event of the rejection of any applicant, the Secretary 
 shall draw an order upon the Treasurer for the amount of the 
 fee which accompanied the application without action being 
 taken by the lodge. 
 
 After an application has been received and referred, it shall 
 not be withdrawn without the consent of three-fourths of the 
 members present. 
 
 Any applicant for the degrees failing to present himself 
 within six months after his election and notification of the same 
 by the Secretary, shall be considered as having forfeited the fee 
 deposited, and all proceedings in his case become null and void ; 
 provided, however, that for good cause shown, the applicant 
 may, by unanimous consent of the members present, be restored 
 to his status at the time of his election. 
 
 ARTICI^E V. 
 
 FEES AND DUES. 
 
 The fee for the degrees conferred in this lodge shall be thirty 
 dollars {$30.00) and the fee for membership two dollars ($2.00), 
 which must accompany the application. 
 
 Every member shall, on or before the first meeting in Janu- 
 ary of each year, pay to the Secretary the sum of two dollars 
 ($2.00) as annual dues, and any member in arrears for more than 
 two years dues shall be liable to the penalty of suspension from 
 membership. 
 
 ARTICI.E VI. 
 
 finance. 
 
 A Committee on Finance, to consist of three members, shall 
 be appointed annually by the T .". P .'. Grand Master at the time

 of his installation, whose duty shall be to examine the books of 
 the Treasurer and Secretary, and make a report thereon at the 
 annual meeting. The books and accounts of the Treasurer and 
 Secretary shall at all times be at the disposal of this committee 
 upon their application for the same. 
 
 ARTICI^E VII. 
 
 AMENDMENTS. 
 
 These by-laws may be altered or amended at any stated 
 meeting, by a vote of three-fourths of the members present; 
 provided, such alteration or amendment shall have been pro- 
 posed in writing at a previous stated meeting, and shall be 
 approved by the Deputy of the Supreme Council. 
 
 All by-laws and parts of by-laws heretofore adopted by this 
 lodge are hereby repealed.

 HISTORICAL 
 
 Eliadah Grand Lodge of Perfection was organized 
 ■under the authority of the Supreme Council of Sovereign 
 Grand Inspectors General, 33°, for the Northern Jurisdiction, 
 U. S. A., on the fifteenth day of June, 1859; a dispensation 
 having been previously issued by Kilian H. Van Rensselaer, 33", 
 Deputy of the Supreme Council for Ohio and Pennsylvania. 
 
 The petitioners were Peter Thatcher, Jr., Edward R. Gris- 
 wold, Albert C. McNairy, Theodore Ross, Richard Creighton, 
 and David E. Field, all of whom, except Theodore Ross, were 
 present at the organization. 
 
 There not being a sufficient number of members to fill the 
 various offices it became necessary for some to act in dual capac- 
 ities, and the first election of officers, on the date of organiza- 
 tion, resulted as follows :

 charter which was granted subsequently. 
 
 The 111.'. Deputy, H. K. Van Rensselaer, being present, 
 installed the officers elect, and the lodge was closed without 
 transacting further business. 
 
 The next meeting of the lodge was held on August 26th, 
 1859, when the petitions of brothers George H. Adams and 
 George H. Burt were received and referred to committees, and 
 a code of by-laws adopted. Sections 6 and 7 of the by-laws then 
 adopted provided that the Secretary should, within 24 hours 
 after receipt of petition for degrees or membership, inform each 
 member, either in person or by mail, of the time when the

 report of the committee would be in order ; and it was made the 
 duty of every member not able to be present, to mail his vote or 
 hand the same in writing to the Secretary previous to the time 
 when action was to be taken. Such requirements at the present 
 time could hardly be complied with, and in fact the by-law 
 became, obsolete long previous to its repeal by the adoption of 
 a revised code. 
 
 About the beginning of the year i86l there appears by the 
 "records" to have been a "speck of war," or something akin 
 thereto, in the Supreme Council, which called for some resolu- 
 tions on the subject, and which are entered at large on the 
 minutes, " unanimously endorsing their proceedings," renewing 
 " our allegiance and pledge fealty to said Supreme Council in all 
 matters pertaining to the work and government of bodies of the 
 Ancient and Accepted Rite." 
 
 Some fire works were let ofiF in honor of the elevation of 
 " Father " Van Rensselaer to the office of I,ieut. Grand Com- 
 mander of the Supreme Council, and in the words of the com- 
 mittee on resolutions " feeling — without disparaging the claims 
 of any one — that it could not be placed in better hands." 
 
 Shortly after this (May 20, 1861) Edward A. Raymond, 33°, 
 was deposed from the office of Sov.'.Gr.'.Com.'. and 111.". K." H.'. 
 Van Rensselaer, 33°, was placed in Supreme command. On the 
 eighth of January, 1864, annual dues in Eliadah Lodge were 
 "discontinued until further orders," and were not again collected 
 until the year 1888.

 Although the history of the lodge is practically a history of 
 the other bodies of the Rite, which were organized at about the 
 same time, the following notes culled from the records of these 
 bodies may not be devoid of interest. 
 
 Bahurim Council Princes of Jerusalem 
 
 Dispensation for Bahurim Council was issued by Ili<.'. Gii,es 
 Fonda Yates, 33°, Act.'.M/.P.\Sov.".Gr.-.Com.". of the Supreme 
 Council, to Peter Thatcher, Albert C. McNairy, Richard 
 Creighton, Edward R. Griswoi^d, and Theodore Ross, 
 under date May 27, 1859, and was organized by 111.'. Kilian H. 
 Van Rensselaer, 33°, Deputy of the Supreme Council for this 
 District, on the fifteenth day of June, 1859. The first officers 
 elected were :

 The process of election of initiates was the same as in the 
 I/odge of Perfection, and the dues were fixed at one dollar 
 per year. 
 
 Meetings were held at irregular intervals, and from Decem- 
 ber 25, 1 86 1, to April 25, 1862, no convocations were held; then 
 occurred another hiatus until January 28, 1863, this being fol- 
 lowed by infrequent meetings during all the period of the " War 
 of the Rebellion."

 Many tales have been told of the annoyances and difiBculties 
 which beset the " fathers of the guild " in their efforts to estab- 
 lish the Rite in this city. The frequent visits of encouragement 
 made by 111.". Bro.'. Van Refasselaer, who personally conducted 
 the work on many occasions, gave impetus to the craft, and the 
 records bear evidence of the number of times the brethren were 
 obliged to "feel in their pockets" for the "needful" to replenish 
 " Uncle Peter's " treasury. The accessories and paraphernalia 
 were not imported. Theodore Ross, a genius in his way, created 
 many of the moveables. George H. Adams' master hand illu- 
 minated the canvas and perfected many of the striking scenes 
 which entranced the novice, as step by step he progressed 
 onward toward the summit of Ancient Craft Masonry. 
 
 "The writer remembers — as do many others — many of the 
 crudities which were in use before the Rite was transferred to 
 the present Temple. However, we may criticise and smile at 
 the ancient belongings it is quite evident that the heart of the 
 builder was in his work, and that peace, harmony and absolute 
 fraternity prevailed in their councils, and in their lives.

 will show how these early efforts have borne fruit.

 After many years of mild attempt and patient waiting, a dis- 
 pensation was issued May 2, 1889, by 111.'. Henry L. Palmer, 33°, 
 Sov.'.Gr.". Commander, for the establishment of a consistory at 
 Cleveland, Ohio, under the title of 
 
 The Consistory of Northern Ohio. 
 
 The petition was signed hy four hundred a7id fifty Princes of 
 the Royal Secret, and was undoubtedly the most numerously 
 signed petition ever presented for the institution of a Masonic 
 body.

 to the petitioners, and the style changed to that of " Lake EriE
