'"T^HIS VOLUME is issued to commemorate the Fiftieth Anniversary of the founding of the firm. It is not the intention to show everything which has been done, but selections have been made which illustrate the growth and character of the work. ITH ARCHITECTURE and with the building industry of this country no one name is more intimately associated than the name of Eidlitz. The building branch of the family was founded by the late Marc Eidlitz. He was born in Prague on January 31, 1826, and at his father's death, in 1847, came to New York. Here he was apprenticed to a builder for four years and applied himself with such energy and ability that before the term of his apprenticeship had expired he was placed in charge of the work. On April 23, 1854, he established the present business, and as early as 1857 undertook the building of the Broadway Tabernacle, one of the largest churches in the city, and in 1858-9 the store for Lord & Taylor at Grand and Chrystie Streets. Soon thereafter he built the Steinway Ware- house and later Steinway Hall, which was for years the most famous hall of its kind in the country. For over a quarter of a century Marc Eidlitz directed the business alone, erecting structures which were among the important ones of the city, and leaving his mark during his generation, upon the great metropolis. He devoted much time to the betterment of labor con- ditions and was director from New York to the National Association of Builders from its inception and up to the time of his death President of the Building Trades Club. He retained his active interest in the lirm until 1888, when he was elected President of the Germania Bank, a position he held until April 15, 1892, when he passed away, beloved and regretted by all who knew him. It was by his ability and sterling worth that the reputation of the lirm was created. In 1876 his oldest son, Alfred Francis, a graduate in Civil Engineering at Cornell University, was apprenticed to learn the trade, hut contracted a cold during the winter and died in the spring of the following year. Otto Marc, having graduated in the course of Civil Engineering at Cornell University in 1881, began to assist in the administration of the business in that year, and became a partner January i, 1884. Robert James studied architecture at Cornell University and the Royal Polytechnic at Berlin, became associated with the business in 1889, and has been a member ot the firm since 1891. From the beginning quality has been the first requisite. In later years, the firm meeting the newer requirements as general contractors, assisted by an efincient staff, has main- tained its position in the building industry.
