L. Olmsted, Sr., and the "Landscape Architecture as Applied to the Wants of the West" of H. W. S. Cleveland, in France from the "Promenades" of Alphand^ in Germany from the "Stad^e^ei^eijun^pn" of Baumeister, and in England at a considerably later period from Howard's "To-morrow.',' And the great mass of the literature of city planning has been the product of the last twenty years. To compile a comprehensive bibliography of this extensive literature, which is in many languages and comprises material both popular and technical, will be a work of time. The School of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University with the cooperation of the Library of Congress is assembling such a bibliography, of which a preliminary check list was issued in 1912. Since that date several lists have been issued, notably by the New York Public Library at the time of the City-planning exhibition to make a popular appeal, and by the Boston I*ublic Library as an appendix to its monumental Catalogue- of Architecture. Both lists are classified only broadly and neither has gone far in the analysis of special material. The present list has been compiled by the writer especially to meet the n^eds of students and practitioners of city plan- ning, to whom a list thoroughly classified according to a comprehensive scheme must be of the greatest technical value. Practically all of the titles given refer to material which has actually been examined, much of it in the Library of the Harvard School of Landscape Architecture, which contains an excep- tional amount of material, both printed and graphic, collected in connection with the School's instruction in City Planning. These titles have been selected from several times their number because the material to which they refer is useful and available, representative, well illustrated, or suggestive of further references or particular points of view. It has been impossible to include more than a few references of principally historic or local interest from the many showing the progress of the City-planning movement or from the many local publications, which form a body of data of constantly increasing importance. A list of these, local reports for the United States and Canada was published by the "American City" in December, 1914, in which the writer cooperated and to which cross-references have here been made in many cases. 4 CITY PLANNING In the present list, the references are arranged according to the system contained in "City Planning; a Comprehensive Analysis," published in 1913 by the Harvard University Press and prepared by the writer in collaboration with Professor James Sturgis Pray, Chairman of the Harvard School of Land- scape Architecture. The numbers at the left of each reference in this list refer to the classification number according to the Analysis, the alphabetic index to which will serve as a topic index to such headings as are included in this list. The letter L at the right indicates that the material may be found in the Library of the Harvard School of Landscape Architecture ; if not, other abbreviations indicate an available source.
