A GENEALOGY, Thomas Watson. NEW YORK: Printed for the U. Q. Club. 1865. PREFACE. The following records were collected and arranged in 1859, ^*- ^^^ request of Rev. John A. McKinstry, who wished to embody them in a History of the Town of 'Torrington, Conn., which he was then writing. The publication of that book having been abandoned, I have consented to the printing of the records, in their present form, in order that my labor may not be wholly lost. I wish to thank Hon. Origen S. Seymour, of Litch- field, Conn., Mr. Chauncy Watson, of New York City, and Mr. James Watson Williams, of Utica, N. y., for assistance received from them in collecting facts : and my special acknowledgments are due to my neighbor, Mr. D. Williams Patterson, for the use of his genealogical library, and the advice and encourage- ment he has given during the progress of the work. Any additions or corrections will be gratefully re- ceived, and recorded ; and, should enough be gathered to warrant it, will be printed in a supplement. West Winsted, Conn., Aug. 4, 1864. EXPLANATION The names of descendants in the male line are arranged in generations, the whole of one generation being given before any of the next; while those in the female line, bear- ing other names, are given in connection with the names of the parents, and the num- ber of the generation is noted by the small superior figure at the right of the name. One number, of a regular series, is given to each person named Watson, for conveni- ent reference, and if that person is named elsewhere, the same number follows his name^ in brackets, thus [ ], to identify him and refer to his record, but another number following his name in parenthesis, thus ( ), refers to the record of his eldest child. The Roman numerals before the names of the Watsons, and the Arabic figures be- fore those of other descendants, indicate their order in their respective households. ABBREVIATIONS. b, BORN. g. dau. GRANDDAUGHTER. bap. BAPTIZED, m. MARRIED. d. DIED. Unm. UNMARRIED. dau. DAUGHTER. b. p. siflC proU^ WITHOUT ISSUE. When frequently repeated in the same connection, names of towns are represented by their initials. GENEALOGY OF THE WATSON FAMILY. 1. JOHN WATSON'(2) is supposed to have been a native of England. A tradition among his de- scendants, says, that one of the passengers on the same vessel with him was Peggy Smith, a young woman who fell overboard, and that he saved her life, and on reaching New England they were married. We first find him in Hartford, Conn., in 1644, in which year he was a juror. In 1646, he was highway surveyor ; and, as shown by Mr. W. S. Porter, he lived on lot No. 9, South Main street, in 1646. He afterwards bought land of the original proprietors in the West Division, now West Hartford.* The exact date of his death does not appear, but the date of his will, and the date of its proof, show that it must have been between March 26 and June 4, 1650. * Robert Watson was in Windsor, Conn., in 1639, was a bellfounder from London, in England. He married Mary Roclcwell in 1646, died in 1689, and has numerous de- scendants in East Windsor at the present day. Thomas and John were in the Colony in 1644. Of Thomas we learn nothing further. Caleb, son of one John Watson, born in Roxbury, Mass., 1641, afterwards came to Hartford, Conn., and died there in 1725. He was a school-teacher for 25 years, and sometimes had the title of Rtv. pre- fixed to his name. His will dated Jan. 27, 1721, — his widow Mary, executrix, — estate £320. They left no issue. There is a vague tradition among the descendants of both Robert and John, that Ro- bert, Thomas and John, were brothers, and Caleb a relative ; but we find no positive proof of it on record. The fact that the names oi John, Thomas and Caleb, have been cherished and transmitted among the posterity of Robert and John, affords good ground for conjecture, but not conclusive evidence that they were relatives. WATSON FAMILY. The following copy of his will is taken from the second volume of the Records of the Particular Court, folio 26 : "March 26th, 1650. " Prifed by John White, John Bernard."
