MARTIN'S STREET, LONDON, W.C. MCMIII. Richard Clay and Sons, Limited, bread street hill, e.g., and bdngay, suffolk. INTBODUCTION The Library of the Hellenic Society began informally, soon after the birth of the Society itself, in the year 1879. Exchanges were then arranged of the Journal of Hellenic Studies with some of the principal archaeological journals, and a few back numbers of periodicals were purchased. In 1882 a Library Committee was appointed, and rules were drawn up for the use of the Library. It was determined, however, ' that the formation of a Library should be restricted in the main to books presented or received in exchange for the Joi,i/rnal, though the purchase of special books might from time to time be sanctioned.' Proceeding on these lines the progress of the collection was slow for several years. In 1885 the sole use of a small room was first secured for the use of members. In 1897 a definite income of £75 per annum was assigned to the service of the Library, and since that date the progress has been more rapid and uniform. A Catalogue of the Library as it stood in February 1888 was issued with Vol. VIII. of the Journal, and that is the only complete Catalogue that has hitherto been printed. Since that date the accessions have been printed year by year with the Annual Reports, and it had become necessary for a member at a distance to search through fourteen lists to discover if a book was in the Library. The present Catalogue represents the state of the collection at the end of February 1903. The chief means by which the Library has been formed have been by exchanges of periodicals ; by donations from authors and publishers ; by donations from the Trustees of the British Museum ; by purchase ; by exchanges of the Journal for booksellers' stock. The last named method has only been employed in Germany, and VI to this cause is largely due the apparent predominance of German literature in the present Catalogue. The Catalogue is for the most part a catalogue of authors. In the case of classical texts the principal entry is made under the name of the ancient author or group of authors (such as Mythographi) with cross references from the name of the modern editor, commentator or translator. In the case of Museums and collections, the principal entry is made under the heading of the Museum or collection, with cross references from the names of cataloguers. Private collec- tions are usually entered under the name of the owner. Public collections (except ' British Museum ' and ' Louvre ') are cata- logued under the name of the town in which they are placed. Periodical publications, and the transactions of Academies , and Public Bodies have been entered under the headings by which they are generally known to scholars. This has seemed to be the most convenient way of dealing with a small and special library. In order to prevent any difBculty which might arise from the inconsistencies thereby introduced, a list is annexed of such works grouped under their respective places of origin. Where a Learned Body has its seat in one town and issues its publications in another, preference has been given to the former. Extra, cts from Periodicals (principally in the Overbeck Collec- tion of tracts) are only included in the catalogue, if the volume in which they originally appeared is not in the Library. When possible, the name and volume of the periodical are given. The individual writers in collective works such as the ' His- toricorum Graecorum Fragmenta,' or the ' Strena Helbigiana ' are only included in a few instances. The old card catalogue of the Library will continue to serve as an index to such collections. In the case of substantive works, where no place of origin is given, London must be understood. A. H.
