JOSEPH PENNEIvL, artist, illustrator ^ and author, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 4, 1860. He was a student at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Pennsylvania School of Industrial Art. In 1882 he went to New Orleans to il- lustrate some articles on that city by George W. Cable, and in the following year he went to Italy to make the illus- trations for "Tuscan Cities," by William Dean Howells. In 1884 he again went to Europe, where he has remained ever since, living for the greater part of the time in London. Among works of this early period were the illustrations for "The Sa6ne: a summer voyage," by Philip Gilbert Hamerton, and the series of illustrations for the "English Cathedrals" of Mrs. Schuyler van Rensselaer, which first ap- peared from 1887 to 1890 in the Century Magazine. Mrs. Pennell was the author of several of the earlier books and articles illustrated by Mr. Pennell. The 5 first of these was " Our Canterbury Pil- grimage," wliicli was published in 1885, and followed by other books from year to year, the most recent being " French Cathedrals" (1909). Marion Crawford's "Salve Venetia" (1905), and many other books. Mr. Pennell is author as well as illus- trator, and besides books written in collab- oration with his wife there have been several written entirely by Mr. Pennell. His works on illustration have proved a needed contribution to art literature. The most recent book written jointly by Mr. and Mrs. Pennell is the authorized " Life of James McNeill Whistler," which was published in 1908. Mr. Pennell is a member of the Inter- national Society of Painters, Sculptors and Gravers, the National Academy of Desigfn, National Institute of Arts and Letters, London Society of Illustrators, Architectural League of New York, and of etching societies in Europe and Amer- ica.
