Introductory Notice to the Greek New Testament, by Tregelles. CORNELL UNIVERSITY LIBRARY Mai. iii. 1. Is. xl. 3, THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MARK. CHAPTER I. ' I 'HE beginning of the Gospel of -'- Jesus Christ, the Son of God, as it is written in the Prophets : 2 Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way : 3 The voice of him who crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 4 John was baptizing in the wil- derness and preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 5 And all the land of Judea, and all the dwellers in Jerusalem, went out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a leathern girdle about his loins ; and he ate locusts and wild honey ; 7 And he preached, saying. One mightier than I cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and loose : 8 I have baptized you with water ; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit. 9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus went from Naza- reth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in the Jordan ; 10 And as soon as he came up out of the water, he saw the heavens parted, and the Spirit descending upon him as a dove ; 1 1 And a voice came from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. 12 And immediately the Spirit sendeth him forth into the wilder- ness : 13 And he was tried by Satan in the wilderness forty days, and was among the wild beasts ; and the angels ministered to him. 14 But after John was committed to prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God : 15 And saying, The time is ful- filled, and the kingdom of God is at hand ; repent, and believe in the gospel. 16 And as he walked by the lake of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the lake, for they were fishers : 1 7 And Jesus said to them, Come after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. 18 And they at once left their nets and followed him. Ps. ii. : ST. MARK. 19 And going a little further he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets ; 20 And he forthwith called them : and leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, they went after him. 21 And they enter into Caper- naum, and forthwith on the sab- bath he taught in the synagogue. 22 And they were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as having authority, and not as the Scribes. 23 And presently a man came into the synagogue with an unclean spirit, and it cried out, 24 Saying, Let us alone, what have we to do with thee, Jesus of- Naza- reth .'' Art thou come to destroy us ? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. 25 And Jesus rebuked it, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him : 26 And the unclean spirit tare him, and cried with a loud voice, and came out of him. 27 And all were amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying. What is this ? — anew teach- ing with authority — and he com- mandeth even the unclean spirits, and they obey him: 28. And forthwith his fame spread through all the surrounding country of Galilee. 29 And as soon as he came out of the synagogue, he went into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 And Simon's wife's mother lay ill of a fever, and forthwith they tell him about her. 31 And he went and took her by the hand and raised her up : and at once the fever left her, and she ministered to them. 32 And at evening when the sun had set, they brought to him all that were diseased, and that were possessed by demons : 33 And the whole city was gathered together at the door, and he healed many that were ill with divers diseases, 34 And cast out many demons; and suffered not the demons to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 35 And rising early, a long time before it was day, he went out and departed to a solitary place, and there prayed. 36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him ; 37 And having found him, they said to him. All are seeking thee. 38 And he said to them. Let us go elsewhere to the next towns, that I may preach there also, for to that end I came forth : 39 And he preached in their syna- gogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out demons. ST. MARK. 40 And a leper came, beseeching him, and saying to him. If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 41 And he was moved with com- passion, and stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, I will ; be thou clean: 42 And immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed: 43 And strictly charging him, he forthwith sent him away; 44 And said to him, See thou tell nothing to anyone, but go, show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing what things Moses commanded for a testimony to them; 45 But he on going out began to publish much, and to spread the matter abroad, so that Jesus could no more openly go into the town, but was without in lone places ; and they came to him from all parts. CHAPTER II. BUT after some days, entering again into Capernaum, it was noised that he was in the house: 2 And forthwith many were ga- thered together, so that there was no space not even about the door ; and he preached the word unto them. 3 And they come to him, bearing a man ill of the palsy carried by four ; 4 And not being able to come near to him, through the crowd, they opened the roof where he was, and breaking through it, they let down the bed on which the palsied man lay: 5 And when Jesus saw their faith, he said to the palsied man. Son, thy sins are forgiven. 6 And some of the Scribes were sitting there and reasoning in their hearts that this man speaking thus blasphemeth: who can forgive sins but God only? 7 And Jesus forthwith perceiving in his spirit that they so reasoned within themselves, said to them. Why do you reason these things in your hearts ? 8 Whether is it easier to say to the palsied man, thy sins are for- given, or to say, rise, take up thy bed and walk ? 9 But that you may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins, (he said to the pal- sied man,) 10 I tell thee, rise ; take up thy bed and go to thy house. 1 1 And he rose, and immediately took up his bed and went out before them all; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying. We never saw anything like this ! 12 And he went out again by the lake, and all the multitude came to him, and he taught them. 13 And as he passed by he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at 2 3 ^•»»** ST. MARK the toll-house ; and he said to him, Follow me; and he rose and followed him. 14 And it came to pass while he was recUning at table in his house, that many tax-collectors and sinners were at table with Jesus and his disciples ; for there were many, and they followed him. 15 And the Scribes and Pharisees, on seeing him eating with sinners and tax-collectors, said to his dis- ciples that he eateth with tax- collectors and sinners. 16 And Jesus hearing it, said to them. The strong need not a phy- sician, but they that are sick : I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners. 17 And the disciples of John and the Pharisees were fasting, and they come and say to him. Why do the disciples of John and the Pharisees fast, but thine fast not ? i8 And Jesus said to them. Can the children of the bride chamber fast while the bridegroom is with them ? So long as they have the bridegroom with them they cannot fast. 19 But the days will come when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then in those days they shall fast. 20 No one seweth a piece of new cloth to an old garment, else the new piece that fiUeth up the rent taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worse. 21 And no one putteth new wine into old skins, else the wine will burst the skins, and the wine and the skins perish ; but he putteth new wine into new skins. 22 And it came to pass that he was going through the cornfields on the sabbath, and his disciples began to pluck the ears of corn as they went along. 23 And the Pharisees said to him. See, why do they that which is not lawful on the sabbath day ? 24 And he said to them. Have you never read what David did when he had need, and when they who were with him were hungry } 25 How he went into the house of God, in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the shew-bread, which is not lawful but for the priests to eat, and gave it also to those that were with him ? 26 And he said to them. The sab- bath was made for man, not man for the sabbath, so that the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath. CHAPTER in. A ND he entered again into the -'^ synagogue, and a man was there who had a withered hand. 2 And they watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath, that they might accuse him. 3 And he said to the man who had the withered hand, Stand forth into the midst. Deut. xziii. 25. Bxod. xxix. 32, 33. Lev. xxiv. 9. ST. MARK. 4 And he said to them, Is it better on the sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill ? but they vi^ere silent. 5 And looking round on them with anger, being grieved for the hard- ness of their hearts, he said to the man, Stretch out thine hand; and he stretched it out, and his hand was restored. 6 And, going out, the Pharisees forthwith consulted with the Hero- dians against him, how they might destroy him. 7 But Jesus withdrew with his disciples to the lake: and a great multitude followed him from Galilee, and from Judea, and from Jerusa- lem, and from Idumea, and beyond the Jordan. 8 And a great multitude from about Tyre and Sidon, hearing what great things he did, came to him. 9 And he spake to his disciples that a small boat should wait on him, because of the multitude, that they might not throng him. 10 For he had healed many ; so that as many as had distempers pressed on him to touch him. 11 And the unclean spirits, when they saw him, fell down before him, and cried, saying. Thou art the Son of God. 12 But he strictly charged them that they should not make him known. 13 And he went up to the moun- tain, and called to him those whom he would, and they came to him. 14 And he ordained twelve, whom he also called apostles, who should be with him, and whom he might send forth to preach and to have power to cast out demons. 15 And he appointed the twelve, and gave to Simon the surname Peter. 16 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, h,e surnamed Boanerges ; that is, sons of thunder. 17 And Andrew and Philip, and Bartholomew and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Al- phaeus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Canaanean, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. 18 And they went into a house, and the multitude again gathered together, so that they were not able even to eat bread. 19 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said he is beside himself. 20 And the Scribes who had come down from Jerusalem said that he has Beelzebub, and casts out demons by the prince of the demons. 21 And calling them to him, he said to them in parables. How can Satan cast out Satan ? 22 For if a kingdom be divided against itself that kingdom cannot stand. S ST. MARK. 23 And if a house be divided against itself that house cannot stand. 24 And if Satan rise up and be divided against himself, he cannot stand, but comes to an end. 25 No one can enter into a strong man's house, and plunder his goods, unless he first bind the strong rnan, and then he may plunder his 1^'ouse. - a6 Verily I tell you, all sins shall be forgiven to the sons of men, and blasphemies vifhich they have spoken; 27 But he who shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit hath never forgiveness, but is guilty of eternal sin: 28 Because they said he has an unclean spirit. 29 And his mother and his bre- thren came, and standing without sent to him, and calling to him. 30 And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him. Behold, thy mother and thy brethren are seeking thee without. 31 But he answered them and said. Who is my mother ? and who are my larethren ? 32 And looking round on those who sat about him, he said. Behold my mother and my brethren ! 33 For whosoever will do the will of God, the same is my brother, and sister, ,and mother. CHAPTER IV. AND he began again to teach by the lake, and a great mul- titude was gathered to him, so that he went into the boat, and sat on the lake : and the whole multitude were by the lake on the land. 2 And he taught them many things in parables ; and in his teaching said to them : 3 Hearken; behold, a sower went out to sow ; 4 And it came to pass, as he sowed, that some seed fell by the wayside, and the birds came and devoured it; 5 And others fell on stony ground where it had not much earth ; and it immediately sprang up, because it had no depth of earth ; 6 And when the sun was risen, it was scorched, and because it had no root it withered away. 7 And some fell among the thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it, and it yielded no fruit. 8 And others fell on good ground, and yielded fruit that grew and in- creased, and brought forth, some thirtyfold, and some sixty, and some an hundred. 9 And he said. He who hath ears to hear, let him hear. ID And when he was alone, they that were about him, with the twelve, asked him concerning the para.bles. 1 1 And he said to them. To you it ST. MARK. Is. Ti. 9. is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God, but to them that are without all things are done by parables ; 12 That seeing they may see and not perceive, and hearing they may hear and not understand, lest they should be converted, and their sins be forgiven them. 13 And he said to them. Know you not this parable? how then shall you know all the parables ? 14 The sower sows the word; 15 And those, where the word is sown by the wayside, are they when they have heard it, Satan comes- forthwith and takes away the word that had been sown in them. 16 And in like manner, those which are sown on the stony ground, are they who, when they have heard the word, receive it at first with joy; 17 But having no root in them- selves, they endure only for a season : afterward, when tribulation or per- secution ariseth on account of the word, they presently stumble : 18 And there are others which are sown among the thorns: these are they that hear the word ; 19 But the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lust of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful. 20 And those which are sown on good ground are they who hear the word and receive it, and bring forth fruit, some thirtyfold, and some sixty, and some an hundred. 21 And he said to them, Is the lamp brought to be put under the bushel or under the bed ? and not to be set on its stand ? 22 For there is nothing hid that shall not be manifested, nor any- thing been kept secret, but that it may be brought to light. 23 If any one have ears to hear, let him hear. 24 And he said to them. Take heed what you hear, with what measure you measure it shall be measured to you, and more shall be added to you: 25 For to him that hath shall more be given, and from him who hath not, even that which he hath shall be taken away. 26 And he said, The kingdom of God is as a man who casteth seed on the earth ; 27 And he sleepeth and waketh, night and day, and the seed spring- eth up, and groweth he knoweth not how: 28 The earth bringeth forth its fruit of itself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear : 29 But when the fruit is brought forth, the reaper immediately puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come. 30 And he said. How can we hken 7 ST. MARK. the kingdom of God? or in what parable can we place it ? 31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which when it is sown in the earth is less than all the seeds that are on the earth. 32 But when it has been sown, it grows up and becomes the greatest of all herbs, and shoots forth great branches, so that the birds of the air are able to roost under its shade. 33 And with many such parables he spake the word to them as they were able to hear, and without a parable he spake not to them : 34 But when they were apart, he explained all things to his dis- ciples. 35 And the same day when it was evening he said to them. Let us pass over to the other side. 36 And when they had sent away the multitude, they took him in the boat in which he was, though other boats also were with him. 37 And a great squall of wind arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already fiUing. 38 And he was in the stern of the boat sleeping on a pillow, and they awake him, and say to him, Master, carest thou not whether we perish ? 39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace, be still : and the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 And he said to them, Why are you fearful ? how is it that you have not faith ? 41 And they were greatly afraid, and said one to another. Who, then, is this, that even the wind and the water obey him ? CHAPTER V. AND they went over to the other side of the lake, to the country of the Gerasenes. 2 And as he landed from the boat, a man with an unclean spirit met him, who came out of the tombs ; 3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs ; and no one could ever bind him, even with chains : 4 For he had often been bound with fetters and chains, yet the chains had been forced asunder by him, and the fetters broken in pieces; and no one was able .to tame him : 5 And he was always in the tombs, and in the mountains, night and day, crying out, and cutting himself against the stones. 6 And seeing Jesus at a distance, he ran and worshipped him : 7 And crying out with a loud voice, said. What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the most high God. I adjure thee by God that thou torment me not. 8 For he said to it. Thou unclean spirit, come out of the man ! 9 And he asked it, What is thy ST. MARK. name. Anditsaidtohim, My name is Legion, for we are many. 10 And it besought him earnestly that he would not send them away out of the country. 1 1 And a great herd of swine was feeding there near the mountains : 12 And they besought him, saying, Send us to the swine, that we may enter into them: and he suffered them to go. 13 And the unclean spirits came out and went into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were drowned in the lake. 14 And they that fed them fled, and told it in the city and in the country: and they went out to see what it was that had been done. 15 And they came to Jesus, and saw the demoniac who had been possessed, seated, clothed, and in his right mind : and they were afraid. 16 And they that saw it told them how it had befallen the demoniac, and concerning the swine : 17 And they began to beseech him to depart out of their country. 18 And as he was entering into the boat, he that had been a demo- niac besought him that he might be with him : 19 But he suffered him not, but said to him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them what great things the Lord hath done for thee, and that he hath had compassion on thee : 20 And he went away and began to publish in Decapolis what great things Jesus had done for him, and they all marvelled. 21 And when Jesus had again crossed in the boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to him: and he was by the lake. 22 And one of the rulers of the synagogue came, by name Jairus ; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, 23 And besought him earnestly, saying. My little daughter is at the point of death : I pray thee to come, and lay thy hands on her that she may be healed and live. 24 And Jesus went with him ; and a great multitude followed him, and pressed on him. 25 And a woman, who had had an issue of blood twelve years, and had suffered much from many phy- sicians, 26 And had spent all that she had, and was in no way better, but rather grew worse ; 27 Having heard the things told of Jesus, came behind him in the crowd, and touched his garment: 28 For she said. If I may but touch his garment, I shall be healed. 29 And forthwith her flow of blood was dried up ; and she felt in her body that she was cured of her plague. 30 And Jesus, immediately know- ing in himself that power had gone 9 ST. MARK. out from him, turned round in the crowd, and said, Who touched my garments ? 31 And the disciples said to him, Thou seest the multitude pressing thee, and sayest thou. Who touched me? 32 And he looked round about to see her who had done this. 33 But the woman, knowing what had been done in her, came fearing, and trembling, and fell down before him, and told him all the truth. 34 And he said to her. Daughter, thy faith hath cured thee : go in peace, and be healed of thy plague. 35 While he was yet speaking, they came from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying, Thy daughter is dead: why troublest thou the Master any further ? 36 And Jesus, hearing the word spoken, said to the ruler of the syna- gogue. Be not afraid, only believe. 37 And he suffered no one to fol- low him but Peter, and James, and John the brother of James. 38 And they come to the house of the ruler of the synagogue ; and he seeth a tumult, and those who wept and wailed greatly. 39 And when he entered, he said to them, Why make you this stir, and weep ? the maiden is not dead, but sleepeth : and they derided him. 40 And when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the maiden, and those that were with him, and entered in where the maiden was. 41 And taking the maiden by the hand, he said to her, Talitha cumi ; which being interpreted is, Damsel, I bid thee rise. 42 And forthwith the damsel rose, and walked ; for she was of the age of twelve years. And they were greatly amazed. 43 And he strictly charged them that no one should know it, and ordered that something should be given her to eat. CHAPTER VI. AND he departed thence, and came to his own country; and his disciples follow him. 2 And when the sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many who heard him were astonished, saying, Whence hath this man these things? and what is this wisdom which is given to him, that such mighty works are done by his hands ? 3 Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judah, and Simon? and are not his sisters here with us ? And they believed not on him. 4 And Jesus said to them, A pro- phet is not without honour, except in his own country, and among his own kindred, and in his own house. 5 And he could not do any mighty work there, save that he laid his ST. MARK. hands on a few that were sick, and healed them : and he marvelled because of their unbelief. 6 And he went through all the villages around teaching. 7 And he called to him the twelve, and began to send them forth two and two, and gave them power over unclean spirits. 8 And he charged them that they should take nothingfortheirjourney, but a staff only ; no bread, no wallet, 9 No money in their girdle; but to be shod with sandles; and not to provide two coats. 10 And he said to them, Wherever you enter a house, abide there till you depart thence. 11 And whatever place will not receive you, nor listen to you ; when you depart thence, shake off the dust that is under your feet for a testimony against them. 12 And they went forth, and preached. That all should repent. 13 And they cast out many de- mons, and anointed with oil many that were sick, and healed them. 14 And King Herod heard of him, for his name was spread abroad; and he said. That John who bap- tized is risen from the dead, and therefore the mighty powers operate in him. 15 But others said. That he is Elijah ; and others said. That he is a prophet, as one of the prophets. 16 But when Herod heard thereof, C he said. It is John, whom I be- headed : he is risen from the dead. 17 For Herod himself had sent forth, and laid hold on John, and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, because he had married her: 18 For John had said to Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brother's wife. ig Therefore Herodias had re- sentment against him, and wished to kill him ; but was not able : 20 For Herod feared John, know- ing that he was a just and holy man; and he protected him, and doubted about many things, when he had heard him ; and he listened to him gladly. 21 But when a convenient day came, that Herod on his birthday made a feast to his nobles, and commanders, and chief men of Galilee ; 22 And when the daughter of Herodias came in there and danced, she delighted Herod, and his guests who were at table with him. 23 And the king said tothedamsel, Ask of me what thou wilt, and I will give it thee. 24 And he sware to her. What- soever thou shalt ask of me I will give thee, tothehalf of my kingdom. 25 And she went out, and said to her mother. What shall I ask ? And she said, The head of John the Baptist. ST. MARK. 26 And immediately coming in with haste to the king, she asked, saying, I will that thou forthwith give me on a dish the head of John the Baptist. 27 And though the king was ex- ceeding sorry, yet on account of his oath, and of those who were with him at table, he would not refuse her. 28 And immediately the king sent a soldier of his guard, and ordered him to bring his head : 29 And he went and beheaded him in the prison : and brought his head on a dish, and gave it to the damsel, and the damsel gave it to her mother. 30 And when the disciples heard of it, they came and took up his corpse, and laid it in a tomb. 31 And the apostles came to- gether again to Jesus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught. 32 And he said to them. Come by yourselves apart to a lone spot, and rest awhile : for those who were coming and going away were many, and they had not leisure even to eat : 33 And they went away in the boat to a lone spot apart by them- selves. 34 But many saw them depart- ing, and knew whither ; and they ran thither together by land, out of all the towns, and arrived first be- fore them. 35 And on landing he saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, be- cause they were as sheep having no shepherd : and he began to teach them many things. 36 And when the day was already far spent, his disciples came to him, and said. This is a lone place, and it is now very late : 37 Send them away, that they may go into the country and villages around, and buy themselves some- thing to eat. 38 But he answered and said to them, Give you them to eat : and they say to him, Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat ? 39 And he saith to them. How many loaves have you ? go and see : and when they knew, they say. Five, and two fishes. 40 And he ordered them to make them all lie down by companies on the green grass ; 41 And they laid down in ranks, by hundreds and by fifties. 42 And taking the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed and brake the loaves, and gave them to the dis- ciples to set before them ; and he divided the two fishes among them all: 43 And they did all eat, and were satisfied. 44 And they took up of the broken ST. MARK. pieces, and of the fishes, twelve baskets full : 45 And they that had eaten of the loaves -tvere five thousand men. 46 And he forthwith constrained Ms disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before him to the other side to Bethsaida, while he sent away the multitude : 47 And when he had taken leave of them, he retired to the mountain to pray. 48 And when it was evening the boat was in the midst of the lake, and he alone on the land : 49 And seeing them toihng hard in rowing, for the wind was con- trary, about the fourth watch of the night he goes towards them, walking on the water, as if he would pass by them. 50 But when they saw him walk- ing on the water, they thought it was a phantom, and cried out ; 51 For they all saw him and were terrified : and immediately he spake to them, and said to them, Be of good courage, it is I : be not afraid. 52 And went up to them in the boat: and the wind ceased, and they were greatly amazed in them- selves : 53 For they thought not of the loaves, because their heart was hardened. 54 And having crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore ; 55 And on their landing from the boat,. and as soon as they knew who he was, 56 They ran round all that dis- trict, and began to carry about on beds those that were sick, wherever they heard he was ; 57 And into whatsoever villages, or towns, or country places he entered, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch even the border of his garment : and as many as touched it were healed. CHAPTER VII. AND the Pharisees and some of the Scribes who had come from Jerusalem went together to him. 2 And seeing some of his disciples eating bread with defiled, that is to say, wHith unwashen hands 3 (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, eat not unless they carefully dip their hands, holding the tradi- tion of the elders : 4 And when they come from the market, they eat not unless they wash; and many other things there are which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, and brazen vessels) ; 5 Then the Pharisees and Scribes asked him. Why do not thy disci- ples walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with un- washen hands ? 13 Is. xxix, 13. Exod. . 12. Dent. T. 16. Exod. xxi. 17. Lev. XX. 9. Prov. XX. 20. ST. MARK. 6 And he said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, 7 This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me ; and in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the pre- cepts of men. 8 For casting aside the command- ment of God, you hold fast the tradition of men. 9 And he said to them. Well do you reject the commandment of God, that you may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said. Honour thy father and thy mother ; and. Whoso revileth father or mother, let him be put to death: 1 1 But you say. If a man have said to his father or mother, It is Korbon, that is, a gift, by whatso- ever thou mightest have aid from me, you suffer him to do no more for his father or mother ; 12 Making void the word of God through your tradition, which you have delivered; and many such like things you do. 13 And calling the multitude to him again, he said, Hearken to me all of you, and understand: 14 Nothing from without the man can defile him, by entering into him ; but the things that go out of the man are those that defile the man. 15 And when he was come into 14 the house from the multitude, his disciples asked him concerning the parable. 16 And he said to them, Are you even thus without understanding ? do you not perceive that nothing which enters into the man from without can defile him ? 17 Because it enters not into the heart, but into the belly, and passes out into the draught, clearing all the food. 18 And he said, That which Cometh out of the man that defiles the man : 19 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, 20 Thefts, covetousness, wicked- ness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness : 21 All these evil things proceed from within, and they defile the man. 22 And departing thence he went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon; and entering into a house he wished that no one should know it : but he could not be concealed; 23 For a woman who had heard of him, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, immediately came and fell at his feet. 24 The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by birth, and she besought him that he would cast out the demon from her daughter. 25 But Jesus said to her. Let the ST. MARK. children first be fed; for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs. 26 And she answered and said to him, Yea, Lord; yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs. 27 And he said to her. For this saying, go thy way: the demon is gone out of thy daughter. 28 And when she came to her house, she found her daughter laid on the bed, and the demon gone out. 29 And again leaving the borders of Tyre, he came by Sidon to the lake of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis. 30 And they bring to him one that was deaf, and had an impedi- ment in his speech, and beseech him to put his hand upon him. 31 And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and spat and touched his tongue; 32 And looking up to heaven he sighed, and said to him, Ephphatha, that is. Be opened. 33 And his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake, plain. 34 And he charged them that they should tell no one : but the more he charged them, so much the more they published it : 35 And were beyond measure astonished, saying. He hath done all things welH he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak. CHAPTER VIII. IN those days, when the multitude was again great, and had not anything to eat, he called his dis- ciples to him, and said to them : 2 I have compassion on the mul- titude, because they have now been with me three days, and have not anything to eat ; 3 And if I send them away fast- ing to their own homes, they will faint by the way, for some of them are come from afar. 4 And his disciples answered him, From whence can anyone satisfy these with bread here in the wilderness? 5 And he asked them. How many loaves have you? And they said, Seven. 6 And he commanded the mul- titude to lay down on the ground; and taking the seven loaves, and giving thanks, he brake them, and gave to his disciples to set before the multitude. 7 And they had a few small fishes : and he blessed them, and bid them to set these also before them. 8 And they did eat and were satisfied; and they took up what was left of the broken pieces, seven baskets : 15 ST. MARK. 9 And they were about four thou- sand, and he sent them away. 10 And he forthwith entered into the boat with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha. 1 1 And the Pharisees went forth, and began together to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to try him. 12 And sighing deeply in his spirit, he saith. Why seeketh this generation a sign ? Verily, I tell you no sign shall be given this ge- neration. 13 And he left them, and enter- ing again into the boat, departed to the other side. 14 And they had forgotten to take bread, for they had only one loaf in the boat. 15 And he charged them, saying. See and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod. 16 And they reasoned among themselves, that it was because they had no bread. 17 And knowing it, he said to them, Why reason you because you have no bread ? do you not per- ceive, nor understand? have you your heart hardened ? 18 Though you have eyes, do you not see ? and though you have ears, do you not hear? and do you not remember ? 19 When I brake the five loaves for the five thousand, how many 16 baskets full of broken pieces took you up ? They said to him. Twelve. 20 And when the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces took you up ? They said to him, Seven. 21 And he said to them. How is it that you do not understand ? 22 And he goeth to Bethsaida, and they bring to him a blind man, and beseech him to touch him. 23 And taking the bUnd man by the hand, he led him out of the town ; and when he had spit on his eyes, and put his hands on him, he asked him if he saw anything. 24 And looking up, he said, I see the men as I see the trees, walking about. 25 Then he put his hands again on his eyes, and he looked about, and was restored and saw all things clearly. 26 And he sent him away to his home, saying, Go not into the village. 27 And Jesus went forth and his disciples into the village of Cesarea Philippi. 28 And in the way he asked his disciples, saying to them. Whom do men say that 1 am ? 29 And they told him, saying, John the Baptist ; but some, Elijah ; and others, That thou art one of the prophets. 30 And he asked them, But you, whom say you that I am ? And Peter ST. MARK. answered and said to him, Thou art the Christ. 31 And he charged them that they should tell no one of him. 32 And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and the chief priests, and the Scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. 33 And he spake this saying openly; and Peter, taking him up, began to rebuke him : 34 But turning and looking on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, say- ing. Go behind me, Satan, for thou art not thinking of the things of God, but those of men. 35 And calling the multitude to him, with his disciples, he said to them. If anyone will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross and follow me : 36 For whoever desires to save his hfe shall lose it ; but whoever loses his life, for my sake and that of the gospel, shall save it. 37 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and suffer the loss of his soul ? or what shall a man give as a ransom for his soul ? 38 For whoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels. 39 And he said to them, Verily I tell you, that there are some of these that stand here who will not taste of death till they see the kingdom of God come with power. CHAPTER IX. AND after six days, Jesus taketh with him Peter, and James, and John, and bringeth them up apart by themselves to a high mountain, and was transfigured be- fore them. 2 And his garments became shin- ing, exceeding white, so as no fuller on earth can whiten them. 3 And Elijah with Moses appeared to them, and they were talking with Jesus. 4 And Peter answered and^said to Jesus, Master, it is well for us to be here ; and let us make three tents, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah ; 5 Not knowing what to say, for they were afraid. 6 And a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice came out of the cloud, saying. This is my beloved son, hear him. 7 And, suddenly looking round, they no longer saw anyone with them, but Jesus only. 8 And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them to tell no one the things they had seen, until the Son of man was risen from the dead. 17 ST. MARK. 9 And they kept the matter to themselves, questioning together what was the rising from the dead. 10 And they asked him, saying, Why say the Scribes that Elijah must first come ? 11 And he said to them, Elijah indeed cometh first to restore all things, and (how it is written of the Son of man) that he should suffer many things, and to be set at naught. 12 But I tell you that both has Elijah come, and that they have done to him whatever they would, as it is written of him. 13 And on coming to his disciples, he saw a great multitude around them, and the Scribes questioning with them. 14 And as soon as the multitude saw him, they were greatly amazed, and ran to him and saluted him. I J And he asked them. About what are you questioning them ? 16 And one of the multitude an- swered him. Master, I have brought to thee my son, having a dumb spirit. 1 7 And whenever it seizeth him it throweth him down, and he foameth and gnashes his teeth, and he pineth away ; and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast it out, and they were not able. 18 And he said, in answer to them, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you ? how long 18 shall I bear with you ? bring him to me. 19 And they brought him to him : and on the spirit seeing him, it tare him, and he fell on the ground, and rolled foaming. 20 And he asked his father. How long is it since this befell him t and he said. From a child : 21 And it has often thrown him into the fire, and into waters, to destroy him ; but if thou canst do anything, have compassion on us, and help us. -22 Jesus said to him. If thou art able, all things are possible to him that believeth. 23 And the father of the child at once cried out and said, I believe ; help thou my unbelief ! 24 And Jesus, seeing that the multitude was running together, rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it. Thou deaf and dumb spirit, I charge thee come out of him, and enter no more into him. 25 And it cried out, and rent him sore, and came out of him : and he became as one dead, so that many said he was dead. 26 But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him, and he stood up. 27 And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why were we not able to cast it out ? 28 And he said to them. This kind ST. MARK. can go out by nothing but by- prayer. 29 And departing thence, they were passing through Galilee, and he , would not that anyone should know it; 30 For he was teaching his dis- ciples, and saying to them, The Son of man is to be delivered into the hands of men ; and they will kill him, and after he has been killed, on the third day he will rise again. 31 But they understood not what was said, and they were afraid to ask him. 32 And he came to Capernaum ; and being in the house, he asked them. What were you debating about on the road ? 33 But they were silent, for they had debated with each other on the road, which of them was greatest. 34 And he sat down and called the twelve, and said to them. If any- one is wishing to be first, he shall be last of all, and servant of all. 35 And he took a child, and set it in the midst of them, and taking it in his arms, said to them: 36 Whoever receiveth one of such children in my name, receives me ; and whoever receives me, receives not me, but him who sent me. 37 And John spoke to him, saying. Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name, and we forbad him, because he follows not us. 38 But Jesus said, Forbid him D not, for there is no one who shall do a miracle in my name who will readily speak evil of me : for he that is not against us is for us. 39 For verily I tell you, whoever shall give you a cup of water to drink, because you belong to Christ, shall not lose his reward ; 40 And whoever shall cause one of these little ones to stumble that believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were thrown into the sea. 41 And if thy hand cause thee to stumble, cut it off : it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than, having two hands, to go away into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. 42 And if thy foot cause thee to stumble, cut it off : it is better for thee to enter lame into life than, having two feet, to be thrown into Gehenna. 43 And if thine eye cause thee to stumble, pluck it out : it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than, having two eyes, to be cast into Gehenna, where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. 44 For everyone will be salted with fire (and every sacrifice will be sailed with salt). 45 Salt is good, but if the salt shall lose its saltness, with what will you season it ? 2 19 ST. MARK. 46 Have salt in yourselves, and be at peace vifith each other. CHAPTER X. AND departing thence, he goes -^*- to the borders of Judea, and the other side of the Jordan ; and multitudes again come together to him, and,-as he was wont, he taught them again. 2 And Pharisees came up and asked him. Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife ? trying him. 3 And he said, in answer to them. What did Moses command you ? 4 And they said, Moses suffered us to write a bill of divorcement, and put her away. 5 And Jesus answered and said to them, Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote for you this precept ; 6 But from the beginning of the creation he made them male and female : 7 Therefore shall a man leave his father and mother, and they two shall be one flesh : 8 So that they are no longer two but one flesh: 9 What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder. 10 And in the house his disciples asked him again of this matter. 1 1 And he said to them. Whoever puts away his wife, and marries another, commits adultery against her. 12 And if she puts away her husband, and is married to another, she commits adultery. 13 And they were bringing chil- dren to him, that he might touch them, and his disciples rebuked them. 14 But on seeing it, Jesus was much displeased, and said to them, Suffer children to come to me, and forbid them not, for of such is the kingdom of God. 1 5 Verily I tell you, whoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a child shall not enter therein. 16 And having taken them up in his arms, he put his hands on them, and blessed them. 17 And as he was going out on the road, one came running and kneel- ing to him, and asked him. Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life ? 18 And Jesus said to him, Why callest thou me good .? none is good but one, that is God. 19 Thou knowest the command- ments, Do not commit adultery. Do not kill. Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Donotdefraud, Honour thy father and mother. 20 And he answered and said to him. Master, all these I have kept from my youth. 21 And Jesus beholding him loved him, and said to him, One thing thou lackest: go, sell whatever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou Bxod. XX. ST. MARK. shalt have treasure in heaven : and come, follow me. 22 But he was grieved at that saying, and went away sorrowful : for he had many possessions. 23 And Jesus, looking round, said to his disciples. How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God ! 24 And the disciples were asto- nished at his words. But again Jesus answered and said to them, Children, how hard it is to enter into the kingdom of God ! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God. 26 And they were beyond measure astonished, saying amongst them- selves. Who then can be saved ? 27 But Jesus, looking on them, said. With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible. 28 Then Peter began to say to him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. 29 And Jesus answered and said. Verily I tell you. There is no one that hath left house, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or children, or lands, for my sake and for the sake of the gospel, 30 Who shall not now receive an hundredfold, houses, and brothers, and sisters, and mothers, and chil- dren, and lands, with persecutions ; and in the age to come eternal life. 31 But many that are now first will be last, and the last first. 32 And they were on the way going up to Jerusalem ; and Jesus was going before them: and they were amazed, and were afraid as they followed him. 33 And he again took the twelve, and began to tell them the things that were about to happen to him ; 34 Saying, Lo, we are going up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the Scribes ; and they will con- demn him to death, and deliver him to the Gentiles : 35 And they will mock him, and scourge him, and spit on him, and kill him : but after three days he will rise again. 36 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come to him, saying. We would that thou shouldst do for us what we may ask thee. 37 And he said to them, What would you that I should do for you ? 38 They said to him. Grant us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory. 39 But Jesus said to them. You know not what you ask: are you able to drink of the cup of which 1 drink? or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am to be baptized ? ST. MARK. 40 And they say to him, We are able. And Jesus said to them, You shall indeed drink of the cup of which I drink ; and with the bap- tism with which I am to be baptized, you shall be baptized: 41 But to sit on my right hand, and on my left hand, is not mine to give ; except to those for whom it is prepared. 42 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant towards James and John. 43 But Jesus, calling them to him, said to them. You know that they who are accounted worthy to rule over the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men employ au- thority against them. 44 But it is not so among you : but whoever among you would be great, shall be your minister; 45 And whoever of you would be first, shall be servant of all. 46 For the Son of man came not to be ministered to, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. 47 And they came to Jericho : and as he was going out from Jericho with his disciples and a great multi- tude, a bhnd man, Bartimeus, the son of Timeus, was sitting by the wayside begging. 48 And hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth, began to cry out, and to say, Jesu, thou son of David, have mercy on me. 22 49 And many charged him to be silent: but he cried out much the more. Son of David, have mercy on me. 50 And Jesus stopped, and bade him be called. And they call the blind man, saying to him. Be of good comfort ; rise, he calleth thee. 51 And casting away his garment, he stood up, and came to Jesus. 52 And Jesus answered and said to him. What wilt thou that I should do for thee } The blind man said to him, Rabboni, that I may receive sight. 53 And Jesus said to him. Go ; thy faith hath healed thee. And immediately he received sight, and followed Jesus on the way. CHAPTER XI. AND when they were come near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, against the mount of Ohves, he sends forth two of his disciples, 2 And said to them. Go to the village over against you, and as soon as you enter it, you will find a colt tied, on which no man hath sit : loose it, and bring it. 3 And if anyone say to you. Why do you this? say, The Lord hath need of it ; and he will forthwith send it hither. 4 And they went, and found a colt tied up against the door without in the street ; and they loose it. ST. MARK. Ps. cxviii. 26. Ps. cxlviii. 1. 5 And some of them that stood there said to them, What are you doing-loosing the colt ? 6 And they said to them as Jesus had bade them : and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and thrust their garments on it ; and he sat upon it. 8 And many spread their garments in the road, and others boughs which they had cut out of the fields ; 9 And they that went before, and they that followed, were crying out, saying, ID Hosanna ! blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord : blessed is the kingdom that cometh in the name of the Lord, of our father David : Hosanna in the highest ! 1 1 And he entered Jerusalem, into the temple ; and having looked round on all things, the time of day being now late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. 1 2 And on the morrow, on coming out from Bethany, he was hungry : 13 And seeing at a distance a fig tree having leaves, he went to it, if haply he might find something thereon: but on coming to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season of figs. 14 And he said, in answer to it. May no one eat fruit off thee for ever : and his disciples heard him. 1 5 And they come to Jerusalem ; and entering the temple, he began to turn out them that were selling and buying in the temple, and over- turned the tables of the money- changers, and the seats of them that sold doves ; 16 And he would not suffer anyone to carry a vessel through the temple. 17 And he taught them and said, Is it not written. My house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations ? but you have made it a den of thieves. 18 Andthechiefpriestsand Scribes heard, and sought how they might destroy him, for they feared him, because all the multitude was as- tonished at his teaching. ig And when it was evening, he went out of the city. 20 And as they passed along at early dawn, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 And Peter remembering saith to him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered. 22 And Jesus answering said to them. Have faith in God. 23 For verily I tell you. That who- ever shall say to this mountain, Be thou taken up and cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that what he speaks will come to pass, it shall be done for him. 24 Therefore I say to you, what- soever things you pray and ask for, believe that you receive them, and they will be given to you. 23 Is. M. 7. Jer. Tii. 11. ST. MARK. 25 And when you stand praying, forgive whatever you have against anyone : that your Father who is in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses. 26 And they go again into Jeru- salem: and as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, and the Scribes, and the elders come to him; 27 And they said to him. By what authority doest thou these things ? or who gave thee this authority that thou shouldst do these things ? 28 And Jesus answered and said to them, I also will ask you one question ; and if you will answer me, I also will tell you by what au- thority I do these things. 29 Was the baptism of John from heaven, or of men.' answer me. 30 And they reasoned among themselves, saying. If we say from heaven, he will say. Why then did you not believe him ? 31 But if we say. From men, they feared the people : for they all held that John was truly a prophet. 32 And they answered and said to Jesus, We know not. And Jesus answering saith to them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things. CHAPTER XII. AND he began to speak to them in parables. A man planted a vineyard, and raised a fence round it, and dug a wine vat, and built a 24 tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went abroad. 2 And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard. 3 And they took him, and beat him and sent him away empty. 4 And he sent to them again another servant : and they struck him on the head, and shamefully treated him. 5 Andhesentanother, andhimthey killed, and many others; and some they beat, and some they killed. 6 He had yet one beloved son: he sent him last to them, saying, They will respect my son. 7 But these husbandmen said among themselves. This is the heir: come, let us kill him, and the in- heritance will be ours. 8 And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard. 9 What wiU the Lord of the vine- yard do ? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and give the vine- yard to others. 10 And have you not read this scripture : The stone which the builders rejected is become the head-stone of the corner: 1 1 This is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes ? 12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew he spoke the parable against them; and they left him, and went away. Ps. cxviii. 22. Deut. XXV. 5, ST. MARK. 1 3 And they send to him some of the Pharisees and of the Herodians that they might ensnare him in his discourse. 14 And when they came, they said to him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest not for anyone, for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: 15 Is it lawful to pay tribute to Csesar or not ? ought we to pay or not pay ? 16 But he, knowing theirhypocrisy, said to them. Why are you trying me ? bring me a penny that I may see it : and they brought it. 17 And he saith to them. Whose image and superscription is this? And they said to him, Caesar's. 18 And Jesus answering said to them. Render to Caesar the dues of Cssar, and to God what is due to God : and they marvelled at him. 19 And the Sadducees, who say that there is no resurrection, came to him ; and they asked him, saying, 20 Master, Moses wrote to us. That if a man's brother die and leave a wife, but leave no children, his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother. 21 There were seven brothers; and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed. 22 And the second took her, and died, and also left no seed: and the third hkewise. 23 And the seven also, and left no seed : last of all the woman died also. 24 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her for a wife. 25 And Jesus answering said to them. You therefore err, because you know not the scriptures, nor the power of God. 26 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels which are in heaven. 27 But concerning the dead, that they rise : have you not read in the book of Moses, how God spake to him at the bush, saying, 1 am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? 28 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living : therefore do you not greatly err ? 29 And one of the Scribes that heard them reasoning together, and perceived that he had answered them well, came to him and asked him. Which is the first command- ment of all ? 30 And Jesus answered him. The first of all is, Hear, O Israel; the Lord our God is one Lord : 31 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. 32 And the second is this. Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself; 25 Exod. iii. ti. Dent, yi. 4. Ley. xix. IP. Pa. ex, 1. ST. MARK. there is no other commandment greater than these. 33 The scribe said to him, In truth, Master, thou hast well spoken : for there is one God, and none other than he ; 34 And to love him with all our heart, and with all our understand- ing, and with all our strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all the whole burnt offer- ings and sacrifices, 35 And when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, he said to him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God, And no one dared any more to question him. 36 And Jesus said in answer, while teaching in the temple, How say the Scribes that Christ is the son of David ? 37 David himself said by the Holy Spirit, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy foot- stool. 38 David himself calleth him (his) Lord ; whence then is he his son ? And the great multitude heard him gladly. 39 And he said to them in his teaching, Beware of the Scribes, who love to walk in long robes, and re- ceive salutations in the market- places, 40 And the first seats in the syna- gogues, and the first places at feasts : 26 41 Who devour widows' houses, and for a pretext make long prayers : these will receive greater condem nation. 42 And as Jesus sat over against the treasury, he saw how the people were throwing money into the trea- sury : and many who were rich threw in much. 43 And a poor widow came, and threw in two mites, which make a farthing. 44 And he called his disciples, and said to them, Verily I tell you. That this poor widow hath thrown in more than all who have thrown into the treasury : 45 For all have thrown in from their abundance ; but she out of her indigence hath thrown in all she had, her whole living. CHAPTER XHL A ND as he went out of the •^~*- temple, one of his disciples said to him, Master, see what stones and what buildings these are ! 2 And Jesus answering said to him, Seest thou these great build- ings? not one stone will be left here upon another that shall not be thrown down. 3 And as he was sitting on the mount of Olives, over against the temple, Peter and James, and John and Andrew, asked him apart, 4 Tell us when these things will be, and what will be the sign when ST. MARK. all these things shall be accom- plished ? 5 And Jesus began to Say to them, Beware lest anyone deceive you ; 6 For many will come in my name, saying that I am the Christ, and will deceive many. 7 And when you hear of wars and rumours of wars, be not troubled: for these things must be; but the end is not yet. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against king- dom : there will be earthquakes ; there will be famines in divers places : these will be the beginnings of sorrows. 9 But take heed to yourselves : for they will deliver you up to councils, and to synagogues : you will be beaten, and will be brought before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them. 10 And the gospel must be first preached to all the nations. 1 1 But when they bring you and deUver you up, benotanxious before- hand what you shall speak ; but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak : for it is not you that speak, but the Holy Spirit. 12 And brother will betray brother to death, and the father his child ; and children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death. 13 And you will be hated by all men for my sake : but he who en- dureth to the end will be saved. 14 But when you see the abomi- nation of desolation standing where it ought not (let him who readeth understand), then let them who are in Judea flee to the borders: 15 Let not him that is on the housetop go down, and enter to take anything out of the house : 16 And let not him that is in the field turn back to take his gar- ment. 17 But woe to them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days ! 18 And pray ye that it be not in the winter. 19 For in those days will be afflic- tion, such as hath not been from the beginning of creation that God created until now, neither will be. 20 And unless the Lord had short- ened those days, no flesh would be saved : but for the sake of those whom he hath chosen, he hath shortened the days. 21 And then, if anyone shall say to you, Lo ! the Christ is here ; or, lo ! there ; believe him not : 22 For false Christs and false prophets will rise up, and show signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if it were possible, even the chosen. 23 But take you heed, I have foretold you all things. 24 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be dark- 2 27 ST. MARK. ened, and the moon will not give her light ; 25 And the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers that are in heaven will be shaken. 26 And then they will see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory. 27 And then he will send forth the angels and gather together his chosen from the four winds, from the end of earth to the end of heaven. 28 And learn a parable from the fig tree. When its shoot cometh forth and putteth out leaves, it is known that summer is nigh : 29 So likewise you, when you see these things come to pass, know that it is near, even at the doors. 30 Verily 1 tell you that this gene- ration shall not pass away till all these things shall have come to pass. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words shall not pass away. 32 But of that day or hour no one knows, not an angel in heaven ; not the Son, but the Father. 33 Take heed, watch; for youknow not when the time is. 34 As a man going abroad, on leaving his house, and giving au- thority to his servants, to each his own work, and commanded his porter to watch : 35 So keep watch then ; for you know not when the master of the 28 house is coming ; whether at even- tide, or midnight, or cockcrow, or early morn : 36 Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping. 37 And what I say to you, I say to all, Keep watch ! CHAPTER XIV. AND after two days was the passover, and the days of un- leavened bread; and the chief priests and the Scribes sought how they might take him by stealth, and put him to death : 2 For they said. Not during the feast, lest there be a tumult of the people. 3 And as he was at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, a woman having an alabaster box of very precious ointment of spikenard came where he was at table, and having broken the box, poured it on his head. 4 But some had indignation within themselves, and said. Why was this waste of the ointment made ? 5 For this ointment might have been sold for more than three hundred pence, and given to the poor : and they murmured against her. 6 But Jesus said. Let her alone; why trouble you her? she has done a good deed on me. 7 For you have the poor always with you, and whenever you will. ST. MARK. you can always do them good, but me you have not always. 8 She hath done what she could, she hath provided before, to anoint my body for the burial. 9 Verily I tell you, wherever the gospel shall be published in the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be told for a memorial of her. 10 And Judas the Iscariot, one of the twelve, went to the chief priests that he might betray him to them. 11 And they on hearing it were glad, and promised to give him money : and he sought how he might conveniently betray him. 12 And on the first day of un- leavened bread, when they sacri- ficed the passover, his disciples said to him, Where wilt thou that we go and prepare to eat the pass- over ? 13 And he sendeth forth two of his disciples, and said to them, Go into the city, and a man will meet you bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 14 And wherever he enter, say to the owner of the house, the Master says. Where is my guest-chamber, where I may eat the passover with my disciples .■' 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished in readiness: there prepare for us. 16 And his disciples went forth. and came into the city, and found as he had told them : and they pre- pared the passover. 17 And at evening he comes with the twelve. 18 And as they were at table, and eating, Jesus said. Verily I tell you that one of you who are eating with me will betray me. 19 And they began to be sorrow- ful, and to say to him one by one. Is it I ? 20 And he answered and said to them. It is one of the twelve that is dipping with me in the dish : 21 For the Son of man is going away, as it is written of him : but woe to the man by whom the Son of man is betrayed ; well for him if he had not been born. 22 And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and having blessed it, brake it, and gave it to them and said. Take it : this is my body. 23 And taking the cup, and having given thanks, he gave it to them : and they all drank of it. 24 And he said to them. This is my blood of the covenant, which is shed for many. 25 Verily I tell you, that I will drink no more of the fruit of the virte, until that day when I drink it anew in the kingdom of God. 26 And having sung a hymn, they went out to the mount of Olives. 27 And Jesus said to them, You will all stumble, for it is written, 29 Zech. xiii. 7. ST. MARK. I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered. 28 But after I am risen, I will go before you into Galilee. 29 Peter said to him. Though all should stumble, yet will not I. 30 And Jesus said to him. Verily I tell thee, that to-day, on this night, before the cock crows twice, thou wilt thrice deny me. 31 But he spake the more vehe- mently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee: and so also said they aU. 32 And they came to a spot whose name was Gethsemane; and he said to his disciples, Sit down here while I pray. 33 And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be sore distressed, and very heavy. 34 And he saith to them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful even to death : stay here and watch. 35 And he went forward a little and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. 36 And he said, Abba Father, all things are possible to thee ; take this cup from me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what thou wilt. 37 And he comes and finds them sleeping, and says to Peter, Simon, sleepest thou ? couldst not thou watch one hour ? 38 Watch and pray, lest you enter 30 into temptation : the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. 39 And again he went away and prayed, saying the same words. 40 And on coming again, he found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy, and they knew not what to answer him. 41 And he comes the third time, and says to them. Sleep forthwith, and take rest: it is enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is de- livered up into the hands of sinners. 42 Arise, let us go forward ; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand. 43 And immediately, while he was yet speaking, comes Judas, one of the twelve, and with him a multitude with swords and staves, from the chief priests and the Scribes and the elders. 44 And he who had betrayed him had given them a sign, saying. Whomsoever I shall kiss is he; seize him, and lead him away safely. 45 And on coming, he at once went up to him, and said, Master; and kissed him : 46 And they laid hands on him and seized him. 47 And one of those that stood by drew a sword, and smote a servant of the high priest, and cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus answered and said to them, Are you come out as against a thief with swords and staves to take me ? 49 I was with you daily in the ST. MARK. temple, teaching you, and you did not seize me : but it is that the scriptures should be fulfilled. 50 And they all forsook him, and fled. 51 But a certain young man fol- lowed him, having a linen cloth wrapped on his naked body; and they laid hold on him : 52 And he left the linen cloth, and fled from them naked. 53 And they led Jesus away to the high priest: and with him were assembled all the chief priests, and the elders and the Scribes. 54 And Peter followed him at a distance into the court of the high priest, and sat down with the at- tendants, and warming himself at the fire. 55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death, and found none: 56 For many bare false witness against him, but their testimonies did not agree. 57 And some stood up and gave false witness against him, saying, 58 We heard him say, I will de- stroy this temple made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands : 59 But not even so did their testi- monies agree. 60 And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, say- ing, Answerest thou nothing to what these are witnessing against thee ? But he was silent, and made no answer. 61 Again the high priest asked him and said to him. Art thou the Christ, the son of the Blessed ? 62 And Jesus said, I am : and you shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and com- ing in the clouds of heaven. 63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and said. What further need have we of witnesses ? 64 You have heard the blasphemy: what think you ? and they all con- demned him to be guilty of death. 65 And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to strike him with their fists, and to say to him. Tell which it is : and the attendants smote him with the palms of their hands. 66 And as Peter was below in the court, one of the maids of the high priest comes : 67 And seeing Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, Thou also wast with Jesus of Naza- reth. 68 Buthe denied, saying, I knownot nor understand what thou sayest. 69 And he went out into the fore- court ; and the maid there, on seeing him, said to them that stood by, This is one of them : and he denied again. 70 And a little after they that stood by said again to Peter, Truly 31 ST. MARK. thou art one of them, for thou art a GaUlean. 71 And he began to curse and to swear, saying, I know not this man of whom you speak. 72 And a second time the cock crew ; and Peter called to mind the word how Jesus had said to him, Before the cock crows twice, thou wilt thrice deny me ; and when he thought thereon, he wept. CHAPTER XV. AND as soon as it was dawn, the chief priests having consulted with the elders, and Scribes, and the whole council, bound Jesus, and brought him away and delivered him to Pilate. 2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews ? and he an- swered and said to him. Thou say- est it. 3 And the chief priests accused him of many things. 4 And Pilate asked him again, Answerest thou nothing ? see how many things they testify against thee. 5 But Jesus still answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled. 6 And at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whichever they asked. 7 And one called Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insur- gents, who had committed murder in the insurrection. 32 8 And the multitude went up and began to ask him to do as he had always done for them. 9 And Pilate answered them, say- ing, Will you that I release to you the King of the Jews .'' 10 For he knew that they had delivered him through malice. 11 But the chief priests moved the people that he should rather release to them Barabbas. 12 And Pilate again answered and said to them, What then say you shall I do with the King of the Jews ? 13 And they again cried out. Crucify him ! 14 And Pilate said to them. Why, what evil has he done ? But they cried out the more vehemently, Crucify him ! 15 And Pilate, willing to content the people, released to them Ba- rabbas : and after he had scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. 16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, which is called Prasto- rium; and they call together the whole band. 17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it on him. 18 And began to salute him. Hail, King of the Jews ! 19 And they struck him on the head with a reed, and spat on him, and bending their knees made obeisance to him. ST. MARK. 20 And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the pur- ple, and put on him his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him. 21 And they impress one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross. 22 And they bring him to a place, Golgotha, which being interpreted is. The place of a skull. 23 And they gave him wine min- gled with myrrh, but he received it not. 24 And they crucify him, and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, what each should have. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of his ac- cusation was written, THE KING OF THE JEWS! 27 And with him they crucified two thieves ; one on his right hand, and the other on his left. 28 And they that passed by re- viled him, wagging tlieir heads, and saying, 29 Ah ! thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself, and come down from the cross. 30 Likewise also the chief priests with the Scribes mocking him among themselves said, He saved others, himself he cannot save. 31 Let the Christ the King of Israel come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe. They also who were crucified with him reviled him. 32 And when it was the sixth hour, darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour. 33 And at the ninth hour, Jesus cried out with a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani ? which being interpreted is. My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me ? 34 And some of them that stood by, when they heard him, said, Be- hold, he calleth Elijah. 35 And as one ran and filled a sponge with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, they say. Let him alone ; let us see if Elijah will come and take him down. 36 And Jesus, crying out again with a loud voice, expired. 37 And the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom. 38 And when the centurion that stood by over against him saw that he so expired, he said. Truly this man was the Son of God. 39 And certain women also were looking on from a distance : among whom was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less, and of Joses, and Salome, 40 Who when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered to Ps. xxii.l. ST. MARK. him ; and many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem. 41 And as it was now evening, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath, 42 Joseph of Arimathea, who also himself waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. 43 And Pilate wondered that he was already dead ; and calling to him the centurion, asked him if he was already dead. 44 And when he knew it from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 45 And he bought linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a tomb which had been hewn out of a rock, and roUed a stone to the door of the tomb. 46 And Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, saw where he had been laid. A^ CHAPTER XVI. ND when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Salome, bought sweet spices, that they might go and anoint him. 2 And on the first day of the week, long before the rising of the sun, they went to the tomb. 3 And they said among themselves. Who will roll away the stone for us from the door of the tomb ? 4 But looking up, they saw that the stone was rolled away, for it was very great. 5 And going into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right hand, clothed in a white robe ; and they were affrighted. 6 And he said to them, Be not af- frighted : You seek Jesus of Naza- reth, who was crucified : he is risen ; he is not here : behold the place where they had laid him : 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Gahlee : there you will see him, as he told you. 8 And they came out, and fled from the tomb, for tremor and amazement had seized them : and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. NOTE. ' The twelve verses which follow are wanting in our two oldest MSS., the Vatican and the Sinaitic ; and the passage is stated by the early Fathers not to have existed in the majority of their MSS. Internal evidence is also against St. Mark having been the writer. On the other hand, many ancient MSS. do contain it, and it is cited by some of the primitive Fathers. It probably was an addition placed here in very early times. Its sources of information are evi- dently independent of the three Gospels ; and it has never been regarded as possessing the same canonical authority with them.' — Dean Alford.
