H. N. sometime Sec'y to the Council of Fellowes C 1 e V e 1 a n d Rowfant Club 1904 3> ^.' 'i-awT Of this number of Rowfantia 125 copies were printed in the month of January I go^ of which this is number ^ ^ \OOS Where are the leaves of yesterday? The Winds have blown them all away." THE shifting winds of a decade have blown since the leaves described in the accompanying list began to fall, and had they been carried into hands other than those inclined by nature and asso- ciation to preserve and value all those things that have no value except that of association, the pre- sentation at so late a date, of such a list as this, would be to little purpose. The desire for a finding-list has often been expressed by members who have preserved their Rowfant notices. This list was designed to meet such a want, endeavoring to supply by description a means of identifying such notices as were issued undated, and to furnish a chronological record, with the aid The Leaves of a Decade of which members could readily arrange their notices in proper order. Conceived as a modest circular, to be in its turn pasted on that page of the scrap book which closes the first ten years of the Club's history, this list grew to the proportions of a volume too large to be published as intended. It would, in conse- quence, have remained in its origi- nal form as a card catalogue for reference, had the Publication Com- mittee not seized upon it. After yielding to their urgent request to prepare the copy for publication, the compiler was asked to give his apology for having done so. And if when you were asked to subscribe for a copy no excuse for the publication of such a volume came to your mind, the following suggestions are offered for your consideration : The Leaves of a Decade That part of this book which has to do with the fixing of mere time should interest those with an accu- mulation of notices to be arranged. Yet to merit a place among the publications of the Club, it should be of interest to members whose notices have long since been scat- tered ; and is it too much to expect that he who will read the legends on these successive milestones marking the progress of the Club, will be well repaid by having recalled to his mind many a pleasant hour passed around its board when the light from the candle beguiled — -a light not dimmed by the thick- ening cloud of burning incense drawn from the jar of " Rowfant Mixture, ' ' but shining the brighter for it. And will it not also repay him, who has neither store of notices nor memories, to learn something of the traditions of the The Leaves of a Decade Club by scanning this skeleton of its history? It is hoped that some one of these reasons will, in your mind, justify the Publication Committee in giv- ing it a place among the publications of the Club. Acknowledgment is here made to those members who have con- tributed to the completeness of this list by the loan of their collections. In addition to the notices issued by the Club through its officers and committees there are a number of items issued by members and sent to the Club at large that are brought together in a supplementary list.
