COHEN, M. D. Of Baltimore NOW IN THE POSSESSION OF Mrs. HARRIETT COHEN COMPILED BY CYRUS ADLER, PH. D. Fellow of the yohns Hopkins University Privately Printed Baltimore: 1887 PRESS OF ISAAC FRIEDKNWALD BALTIMOHE The Bibliographical Notes are usually those of the late owner of the collection. Such as have been added by the compiler bear his initials. In all but a few exceptional cases the size of the book is noted according to the fold of the leaf. The compiler desires to express his gratitude to the friends who aided him with their suggestions, and gave valuable help in reading and correcting the proof. Doctor Joshua I. Cohen was born in Richmond, Virginia, in the year 1801. The family removed during his early child- hood to Baltimore, where he continued to reside until his death on November 4th, 1870. He was a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Maryland, and practised his pro- fession for many years, attaining distinction in the treatment of diseases of the ear, to which he especially devoted his attention. Doctor Cohen was a man of scholarly and scientific attain- ments, and throughout his life held relation with the scientific world, being perhaps best known as a mineralogist. For some years he filled the chair of Geology and Mineralogy in the University of Maryland. His tastes, which were also literary, historical and antiqua- rian, led him to the formation of various collections illustrative of his studies. His cabinet of minerals, and collection of colonial and continental currency, as also his collection of autographs, were more generally known than the collection to which this Catalogue will serve as a guide. In reference to the question as to whether we really have in this copy the MS notes of Moses Mendelssohn, the following corres- pondence and note are of interest : [Translation.] Berlin, ^f^. 10, 1849. Mr. George Heyser, Bremen. Are there not persons in Bremen who can testify to the handwriting of Mendelssohn ? We have received this Bible from the celebrated Friedlander, a pupil of Mendelssohn. If you choose to send us back the Bible, we will let a son of Friedlander, or Dr. Zunz and others testify that these notes are in Mendelssohn's own handwriting. We cannot point out any other way of convincing you. Yours, A. Asher & Co. The above note from Asher to Heyser was in consequence of our application to Heyser that he should have the MS notes authenti- cated as being Mendelssohn's. He wrote to Asher on the subject, and the above is his reply. Joshua I. Cohen. It exhibits the first known specimen of Hebrew type, and has been described by Wolfius, Marchand, Freytag and Laire with rather uncommon minuteness, especially by Wolfius. If Seemiller had noticed this latter description he would not have referred exclusively to Frey- tag. It is evident that Mattaire had never seen the volume. Panzer refers to the Commentary of Schwarz concerning the ' Elements of the Hebrew Language ' by the author of the present work. Consult the Bibl. Hebraica, Vol. II, p. ino-15; Hist, de 39 L'Imprim.,p, 67; Analect. Literar.,p. 634 ; Index Libror. I, p. 370; Incunab. Typog. fasc. IV, p. 2-3 ; Mattaire, Vol. I, p. 345, Note 2 ; Panzer, Vol. I, p. 380-81." The above description is taken from Bibliotheca Spenceriana, by I. F. Dibdin. London, 1814. Vol. 3, p. 432. He gives a facsimile of N13 H'tyNI^, on p. 10, and speaks of these characters as " the first which are known to have been published by means of the press." This is, however, inaccurate. They were not the first Hebrew characters printed, but were the first printed in Germany. Hebrew characters were printed as early as 1471 (Steinschneider in Ersch & Gruber's Encyclop., Sec. II, Vol. XXVIII, p. 49 a, note 34), and two Hebrew books niinn ^"^ 'lyi and D'llD nj^3"IK were published in Italy in 1475. The first complete Hebrew Bible was not issued from the press till 1488. [C.
