This edifice was built in 1773 by the Reformed .Protestant High Dutch, as a house of worship under the pastorate of Johannes Schuyler. The material of which it was built, it is said, was contributed by the inhabi- tants of the.Valley, and it may be seen upon investigation that the stone is from different localities, also in evidence to substantiate this, there can be seen upojn many of the stones in the structure, carved in deep letters, the names of many of the donors which no w—af ter a lapse of 127 years— are still as plain as when paryed. Among the names we find that of their heloyed pastor, Johannes Schuyler, V. D. M., Johannes Ball, Dhairman of the Committee of Safety; Thos. Eckerson, donor of the ground; Johannes Deitz, Harmen Si tntsh r Garel KrameiyThos. A great many of the decendants of these men are living in Schoharie County at the present time* This was not the first church built In Scho- harie. In 1743 The Reformed High Dutch congregation built a Wooden structure acme distance East of .the Port* fa the same year - the 0ermans built a Lutheran church and parsonage combined near the Gold Spring In Schoharie Village, which is,still .standing, it being fcfo oldest building In Schoharie Qoupty. In 1750 a stone .structure was .built near it, and .used as a church until 1796, when the present Lutheran brick church was erected. The Protestant Reformed High Dutch Church of Schoharie was orga- nized December fid, 1730. Johannes Vedder and Johannes Bekker were elected Elders and Samuel Hagadoorn and Peter Ziele, Deacons. The first Pastor was Rinehardt Erickson from 1730 to 1781; second, George Michal Weiss, from 1731 to 1786; third, Johannes Schuyler, from 1786 to 1757; fourth, John Maurittus Goetschius, from 175? to 1760; fifth Abram Rose* cr^nstfrom 1760 to 1765; sixth, Johannes Schuyler, from 1766 to4 THE OLD STONE FORT. from 1780 to 1784 no regular pastor; seventh, George W. In 1785 the Block Houses and Pickets around the Fort were razed and the seats were again placed in - the building and the structure once more ’ became a place ot worship, it was used as such until the year 1844, when a new church was built furtherup in the village. In April, 1867, the building was deeaed to the State of New York for the sum ;of $800.0U. Its preservation as a Revo- lutionary Fort being the strongest argument that couid*be brought to bear to secure the appropriation. The appropriation was secured by George W. Crow and Tobias Bouck, Members of Assembly. The State re-modeied it in a measure for un arsenal; but not having use for it, in 1873, through the effort* of Hon. Peter Oouchman of Schoharie County,, it was donated by the State to the County. -'■■■*■' ; In October, 1780, a strong force of Indians, Tories, and soldiers under the command of Sir John Johnson, Butler, Brandt and the Seneca Chief, Corn Planter, attacked this pitifee-. The inhabitants fled to the Fort, but the enemy were repulsed by a shower ot grape shot and musket balls from the garison and retreated. It is said nearly one hundred persons were murdered on this raid through the Valley. This raid is recognized as one of the battles o£ the Revolutionary War. Nearly every building and grain stack be,ongiog to#the Whigs was destroyed. It was estimated that 100,- 000 btfehels.of grain were destroyed. The buildings of the Tories were spared, but the exasperated Whigs set them on fire as soon as the enemy had retreated and ail shared a common fate. The mark of the cannon balls of that days’ attack can still be seen on the Noith-west side of the Fort in the cornice. Timothy Murphy, who had been in the battle of the Middle Fort the day before with several of his companions, under the command of Col.< Peter Vrooman, left the Middle Fort by a circuitous route, reaching the Lower Fort jtist as the Tories and Indians were passing where the Village of Schoharie now stands;-add assisted in the defense of the Lower Fort.WILLIAMS MONUMENT. W fcAVlO ^VV^LLIAFIS one of the captors of Maj. Andre, in_ honor of whom this monument was erected, was born in Tarry- town, Westchester County, N. Y., Oct. 21, 1759, and enlisted in the army in 1775 at the age of 19 years. On the 23rd day of Septemberr^O, he, with his compatriots, John Paulding and Isaac Van Wert, arrested Maj. John Andre and found on his person treasonable papers in the hand writing of Gen, Benedict Arnold, who sought by treachery to surrender the military fort of West Point into the hands of the enemy. In resisting the bribes of their prisoner for his liberty, they showed their incorruptible patriotism. The American army was saved apd our beloved Country became free. Two thousand dollars was appropriated by the State of New York, through the efforts of Senator William C. Larnoni of Schoharie County, and Dr. Daniel Knower of Schoharie, who secured the removal of the remains from Albany County to this plaee. David Williams died in Schoharie County, August, 1881, aged 76 years 6 months and 8 days, (Engraved on the monument.) South Side:—“By authority of Congress, 1780, a Silver Medal was voted to them and presented to the captors by General Washington, at a dinner to which he invited them while the armv was encamped near West Point.’* North side: Vincit amor Patriae. Gen. Washington’s letter to the President of Congress, October, 1780. The parties that took Maj. Andre, acted in such a manner as does them the highest honor and proves then* to be meu of great virtue. West side:—Nancy Benedict, wife of David Williams, died August 5th, 1844, aged 87 years 6 months and 8 days. This monument was erected by the State of New York from an appro- priation made in the Centennial year of 1876 by a bill introduced by Senator William C. Lainont, under the following commissioners: Daniel Knower, Ralph Brewster and Hon. Charles Holmes.THE 1STH ALB AMY REGIMENT. In the year 1776 »wo delegates from Schoharie met with the General Council at Albany, to devise plans for mutual safety and protection and to make public declaration of their allegiance to American Independence and opposition to the acts of the British Parliament. In June ot the same year a local committee of safety of six persons was appointed to order and regulate the affairs of pub ic interest. In 1775 a regiment of militia was organized in the Albany District, which included three companies from Schoharie, under Col. Peter Vroomnn, who with the commissioned officers of the t,hre4 companies, received their appointments October 20th of that year, i A fourth company Was organized at Oooleskill in 1777 and in 1778 a fifth was enrolled at Dorlooh and assigned to the 15th Regiment: ROSTER.
