CONSTRUCTED, JAAINLY FROM JOWN AND J3HURCH j^ECORDS, B V GEORGE R. HO WELL, OF ALBANY, N. Y. (Formerly of Southampton, L. I.) ALBANY: 1879.Genealogy of the Parsons Family, OF EAST HAMPTON, LONG ISLAND, N. Y. The land now comprised in the town of East Hampton, the easternmost town on Long Island, was purchased, in April, 1648, by Theophilus Eaton, Governor of the New Haven Colony, and Edward Hopkins, Governor of the Connecticut Colony, of the sachems of the Manhanset, Montauket, Corchake (or Cutchogue) and the Shinne- cock Indian tribes of the eastern part of Long Island, for and on account of Robert Bond and eight others associated with him as settlers of the new town. These nine men were, at the time of the purchase, residents of the neighboring town of Southampton, the first colony planted by the English in the State of New York, and twelve miles to the west of the new settlement. East Hampton then was a colony of Southampton, the second one it had sent forth — the first being one to Branford, Ct., in the preceding year. The nine pioneers imme- diately had accessions to their numbers from Southold, on Long Island, and from New Haven and other parts of what is now Connecticut, and from Massachusetts. The people were Puritans, and of the same class of men as the early founders of New England, with all their faults and virtues. Among them, in 1650, appears the4 GENEALOGY OF THE PARSONS FAMILY. name of Samuel Parsons, then a young man about twenty years of age. No record yet discovered informs us of his parentage or birthplace. The record of his death in 1714, at the age of 84 years, is all the information that is left, except the fact that he bore life’s burdens with his stern brethren, and bequeathed a good name as well as a goodly inheritance to his family. No one man can give a complete record of all the descendants of an emigrant of the seventeenth century. This genealogy is one derived chiefly from the church and town records of East Hampton, where the ancestor of the family founded his home in the New World about the year 1650. It is of absolute certainty down to the year 1746, when the Rev. Mr. Nathaniel Huntting ceased his records on the church books, and Dr. Samuel Buel, his successor, took up the story. While the former was always particular to enter the baptism of a child of John Parsons as the son or daughter of John P., son of Robert or of Samuel, as the case might be, Mr. Buel always failed to make this distinction. This fact, where the John Parsons were so numerous, causes some difficulty in deciding at times to which family the children are to be assigned. Other circumstances, as family records and wills, diminish this liability to error, and this publication, it is hoped, will so call the attention of those interested as to make a second edition more correct. The numbers in the left-hand column are continuous, and serve to identify the name wherever found. The numbers in the right-hand column refer back to those in the left, so that the descent may easily be found. The index figure at the right of a name denotes the genera- tion or degree of removal from the pioneer ancestor. The Roman numerals show the number of children.GENEALOGY OF THE PARSONS FAMILY. 5 i SAMUEL, b. 1630, d. July 6, 1714. Had wife Hannah, who d.
