PUTNAM’S SONS 1917 Ls NK SOCK ~HG7+t+ A563965 The Trustees of The Hispanic Society of America take pleasure in presenting a col- lection of tapestries and carpets from the Royal Manufactory of Madrid, loaned through the courtesy of His Majesty the King of Spain and sent to this country in charge of the Marquis of Valverde. The larger number of these tapestries, from designs by Francisco Goya and others, had not been removed from the walls of the Royal Palace of the Pardo since their completion from the original cartoons in the 18th century. It represents several pea- sants drinking and smoking. In the middle, a woman is washing by a well. In the foreground a heap of manure with hens upon it. On the right a girl is trying to raise a drunken man, and some other figures. Landscape back- ground. Woven after a cartoon by Andrés Calleja and bearing the number 3. This was the first cartoon ever painted by Goya for the Royal Manu- facture of Tapestries. It was painted and delivered in 1776, for the Princes of Asturias’ dining room at El Purdo palace. Woven in 1777. A copy of this tapestry was presented to King Leopold of Belgium by H. M. Queen Isabela II. Size: 2,60 2,55. PLATE XV PLATE XVI Tapestry after Goya’s cartoon entitled «The dance». Painted for the palace of El Pardo in 1776-77. Woven in 1778 under the management of Don Cornelio Vandergoten. Another copy, woven in 1832 was presented to King Leopold of Belgium by Queen Isabela I.
