Joun TomPkKINS, SR., NATHANIEL TOMPKINS, SR., EDMUND TOMPKINS, SR., THE Famity Name. * Joun TomMPxIns, Sr., first appears in American genealogical records as a resident in 1640, of Concord, Mass. Where he lived in Massachusetts prior to 1640 is not certainly known, although it is quite certain that he did not either land or reside at Plymouth, Salem or Watertown in that State. He probably was a native of Eng- land, who, in or about 1630, landed within the present boundaries of the municipal-’ ity of Boston. This theory rests upon inferential rather than upon fully verified tes- timony. The passenger lists covering arrivals in Boston Harbor in 1630 are alleged to be missing (see Part 1, Appendix). When found they will materially aid in the final settlement of the matter. An official record at Boston, shows the birth at Con- cord, Mass., of two children,—Ruth and John—to John Tompkins, Sr., but evidence has not been found either at Boston or clsewhere of the birth to him of other chil- dren. Inferential testimony, however, favors the view that he had another son, Nathaniel, older than Ruth and John, although the date and place of his birth are not known. John Tompkins, Sr., was one of a colony including about one seventh of the planters at Concord, Mass., who, in 1644 under the leadership of the Rev. John Jones, emigrated from there to Fairfield, Conn. (Schenck’s History Ancient Town of Fairfield, Vol. 1, p 42). The name of John Tompkins appears quite frequently after 1644 in local records of Fairfield. Mr. Bolton, in his History of Westchester Co., N. Y., (Vol. 1, p. 204) states that the John and Nathaniel Tompkins who on June 24, 1664, purchased certain lands in Westchester Co., N. Y., within the limits of what was known as Eastchester ‘‘were the same persons whose names appear in Fair- field, Conn., town books for 1649, and evidently emigrated from there.’’ As at least two persons named John Tompkins lived in 1649 in Fairfield, Conn., to wit: John Tompkins, Sr., formerly of Concord, Mass., and his son born in 1642, John Tomp- kins, Jr., there is a chance here for possible confusion. It was probably John Tomp- kins, Sr., whose name Mr. Bolton states appeared on Fairfield town books in 1649, for his son was in 1649 too young for his name to be there entered. But the John Tompkins who Mr. Bolton states emigrated with Nathaniel Tompkins in 1664 from Fairfield, Conn., to Westchester Co., N. Y., was probably John Tompkins, Jr., then about twenty-two years of age. Nathaniel Tompkins, Sr., died in Eastchester, N. Y., _Sept. 6, 1684. In his will, recorded Book of Deeds, A., p. 6, Land Records, White Plains, N.Y.,he appoints, ‘‘dvother John Tompkins”’ one of the executors of his estate. This reference to ‘dvother John Tompkins,’’ makes it quite certain that the testator was of the same family with John Tompkins, Sr., of Concord, Mass., and Fairfield, Conn., for as far as is now known, John Tompkins, Sr. and his son, John Tompkins, Jr., were, in Sept. 1684, the only persons to whom the language of the testator could be applied. As John Tompkins, Jr., resided at Eastchester, N. Y., at the time of the death, at that place, of Nathaniel Tompkins, Sr., and John Tompkins, Sr., was at that time probably resident in Fairfield, Conn., it is quite probable that John Tompkins, Jr., was the person appointed executor by Nathaniel Tompkins, Sr., and that the word ‘‘ brother ’’ was prefixed in the will to his name to make it certain that it was his 6 brother and not his father whom Nathaniel intended to appoint as one of his execu- tors. It is not certain that John Tompkins, Sr., resided for any considerable period, if at any time, at Eastchester, N. Y. His name frequently appears in the town and land records of Fairfield Conn., between 1644 and 1688. His name does not appear in list of freemen of Fairfield after 1688, from which it is inferred that he possibly died in Fairfie'd in or about that year. The genealogical information thus far ob- tained concerning John Tompkins, Sr., and Nathaniel Tompkins, Sr., is too incom- plete to warrant speaking of them in all particulars with definiteness and certainty. Questions 2 and 3 on page 44 of this Record furnish opportunity for the presen- tation of further data concerning them. EpMUND ToMPKINS, SR., was admitted April 6, 1735, to membership in a relig- ‘ious society at Woodbury, Conn. The records of that town and of the towns from which it was settled and the records of many other towns in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut and New York, and the records of many genealogists, and also the records of many other persons, have been carefully but almost fruitlessly searched for direct evidence as to the residence of Edmund Tompkins, Sr., before he removed to Woodbury, Conn. The inferential testimony, however, is so favorable to the theory that he was a son of the Nathaniel Tompkins, who died at Eastchester, N. Y., Feb- ruary 15, 1732, that this view of the matter is adopted herein. He was probably born in Eastchester, N. Y., in or about 1702 and lived there until near the close of 1734, when he removed to Woodbury, Conn., where he remained until 1739, removing in 1739 to Waterbury, Conn., where he lived until June 30, 1783, the date of his death. Question 4, page 44 of this Record affords opportunity for the presentation of further information concerning Edmund Tompkins, Sr., of Woodbury and Waterbury. THE Famity NAmgE is spelled in public records, Tompkins, Tompkyns, Thompkins, Tomkins and Tomkyns. These variations are due in part to unsettled usage (See Part IV, Appendix) and also to some extent to the carelessness or ignor- ance of scribes. Nearly all of the American members of the family spell their name Tompkins. ‘T'wo branches, however, spell their names Tomkins (1) the descendants of Micah Tomkins or Tompkins of Wethersfield, Conn. , (1639), (see Part II, Appendix) and (2) the descendants of Charles Tomkins at one time resident in St. Stephen’s parish, Coleman St., London, England (see Part III, Appendix). Mr. Bolton in his history of Westchester Co., N. Y., Vol. 11, p. 233, spells Micah’s family name Tomp- kins, and states that ‘‘he was of the same family with John Tompkius of Concord.”’ Whether Mr. Bolton had direct proof of this statement or simply adopted the opinion upon this subject of some genealogists, cannot now be determined. It is quite pos- sible, not to say probable, that Mr. Bolton’s statement is correct, but this conclusion rests upon inferential rather than upon direct evidence. The question is still an, open one. Question 1, page 44, of this record affords opportunity for the presenta- tion of further evidence upon the subject. PATERNAL LINE. (Senior Branch.) A. D. (1629-1645) to A. D. 1892. 22 WILLIAM THORN OF FLUSHING, N. Y., 1645. No positive clue has been found in any of the Massachusetts towns where rec- ords have been searched, as to the pre-Flushing residence of the William Thorn, who in October 1645 was one of the patentees of the site of the town of Flushing, New York. There was a Mr. Thorn living, very early, at Lynn, Massachusetts, and there are several references to persons of this name in the records of what was once known as Roxbury, Mass., and also in records of at least one other Massachusetts town. The person first referred to, as living at Lynn, should not be confused with the William Thorne made a freeman at Lynn, in May, 1638, and who had land at Lynn, granted to him in the same year. No facts, now attainable at Lynn, establish the identity of this William Thorne just named, with the William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y., 1645. The latter spelled his name Thorn, a custom which his descendants almost without exception have followed. Their signatures to documents of record amply establish this fact. There was, however, on Long Island, N. Y.. a family spelling their name 7horve, unrelated to William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y. (1645). It is more reasonable to conclude that this family was of kin to the William Thorne made freeman at Lynn, Mass., in 1638, who some Massachusetts genealogists think moved to Long Island, N. V., in 1642, than to conclude that William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y. (1645) was identical with him. There was at that early period a lack of uniformity in the spelling of family names, the same person not always spell- ing his family name in the same way (see Part 1V, Appendix). Hence the fact that William Thorne, of Lynn, Mass , 1638, spelled his name differently from the mode of spelling the family name adopted by William Thorn of Flushing, N. Y., 1645, does not, as far as the objection rests ujon a difference in spelling, necessa:ily in- volve the rejection of the theory that the William Thorne of Lynn, 1638, and the William Thorn of Flushing, 1645, were one and the same person. Although Boston, Mass., is the port where at that early period William Thorn would have been most likely to land, it is not at present possible to certainly affirm that he did land there, owing in part to the fact that the official records of the Custom House at that port, for the period from 1628 to 1780, are alleged to be missing. (See Part 1, Ap- pendix.) The trend of the inferential evidence is favorable to the theory that the William Thorn who was in 1645 one the patentees of the site of the town of Flush- ing, N. Y:, was a native of England, who on some date between 1629 and 1645 (quite possibly 1630) landed at some point within the present limits of the municipal- itv of Boston, Mass. The name is spelled in this record Thorn, in accordance with the usage of nearly all of the descendants of William Thorn, of Flushing, N. Y., 1645. An exception is made in the case of one family in deference to what is believed to be the wish of the members of it. Question 7 on page 44 of this Record affords oppor- tunity for the presentation of further evidence relative to the original ancestry of William Thorn, of Flushing, N. V., 1645 23 MATERNAL LINE. : , One of the patentees WILLIAM THORN of the town site of és m. Flushing, N. Y.,1645 | | | Samuel , William Susannah m. ( m. m. July 10, 1667 aaa .
