COMPILED UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF A RESOLUTION OF THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF NEW YORK, PASSED APRIL 26, 1870, UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ( HIRAM CALKINS, CLERK OF SENATE. ALBANY: THE ARGUS OOMPANY, PRINTERS. , 1870. PREFACE. STATE OF NEW YORK, In Senate, ALBany, April 26, A870. On motion of Mr. Genet, fesolved, That there be prepared and printed, under the direc- tion of the clerk of the Senate, a continuation of the Digest of Claims, compiled in the year 1865, which shall comprise all claims presented in either branch of the Legislature, with a brief state- ment of the nature of the claim, whether for land or water dam- ages, or for extra compensation upon canal contracts, and what legislative action, if any, was had thereon ; including and specify- ing therein all claims which have been allowed, or otherwise dis- posed of, with the amount named in bills which have been passed as an absolute appropriation, or as the maximum limit of an award, and the amount awarded in any case by the Canal Appraisers or the Canal Board. Such Digest shall also include all awards, either by the Canal Appraisers or the Canal Board, made since the publication of said Digest of 1865, on claim bills passed previous thereto but not included therein. Resolved, That the Canal Appraisers and the Canal Board be requested to furnish such information as may be in their posses- sion, to render the proposed Digest as complete as possible. Resolved, That five hundred ‘copies of the Digest, prepared as above directed, be printed and: bound for the use of the Legisla- ture, under the direction of the clerk, as soon as possible after the completion thereof, and previous to the meeting of the next Legis- lature. By order. HIRAM CALKINS, Clerk. iv PREFACE. In obedience to the foregoing resolution, this Digest has been prepared. The form and manner of the compilation of previous Digests, made by order of the Senate, has been maintained, and no effort spared in this ‘‘continuation”’ to render it as perfect a record of the claims as the means at command would allow. The present work contains all the petitions and claims of every character presented to the Senate from 1866 to 1870, inclusive, together with the legislative action thereon, and the awards made since the issue of the last Digest. A reso- lution passed the Assembly, at its last session, directing the clerk of that body to prepare a Digest of all claims pre- sented to the Assembly, with the legislative action thereon, for the same period. It is, therefore, thought best not to duplicate the matter by including the claims introduced in the Assembly in this Digest. This work, therefore, is con- fined to the claims presented to the Senate. It also contains a supplement, in which there will be found a compilation of all claims presented to, determined by, and pending before, either the Canal Board or Canal Appraisers, with their decisions and amounts awarded in each case for the last five years. This compilation has been prepared, under~ my direction and supervision, by OLiver C. BENTLEY and CHaRLEs J. GayLorp, from the records of the Legislature and Canal - Department. HIRAM CALKINS.
