Folding gates, elaborately executed in iron, divide the garden from the vifta, alfo laid out in terraces, and cut through the " Home wood ; " this leads to the Chafe, flocked with fallow deer in 1858, a pidturefque and wild diftrift of rocky limeftone pafture, and fo called from " the right of chafe," which was granted together with many other excep- tional privileges by Queen Elizabeth to Walter Devereux, Earl of Effex, in the year 1576.
