The Spectre Against Which
Bigotry is Arrayed.

DlGOTRY is not directed against what Cath-
olics believe; Protestants know that we

believe all that they hold to be essential. It is

not directed against Catholic religious life

;

Protestants know that Catholics attend church
better than they do.

But Bigotry is based on a belief that the
Catholic hierarchy is in politics, that the Pope
seeks to dominate American institutions and to
destroy the public school system. All denomina-

tional papers are constantly impressing this on
their readers; 100,000 preachers seem actually
to believe it; the “Guardians of Liberty” offer
this as the excuse for their existence; the

Masonic papers are now voicing the same
charges; the anti-Catholic sheets live on the

emphasis they lay on this charge.

The compiler of this brochure knows
whereof he speaks; being the editor of a
National Catholic Weekly, whose mission is to
combat, prejudice, he can lay claim to being

better informed than any other person in the
United States on the belief and activity of the
enemy. He is spending over S200.00 in mere
postage to send this brochure as first-class mat-
ter to the Catholic clergy of the country, and
begs them to peruse it and keep the same for
reference.

The Guardians of Liberty

!

The “Guardians” are over 1,000,000 strong, including
more than 6,000 preachers. They have several large
printing plants and appeal with “facts from history” (?)
to intelligent non-Catholics. Their operations are carried

on secretly, though they have many “lecturers” in the
field.

The following item from “The Guardians of Liberty
Journal” shows how the members of this organization
regard Catholics and their Church:

New York Sun, January 7, 1913.

The Guardians of Liberty Journal says:

“The genius of this republic and the Church of Rome are antag-
onistic to the last degree, as opposite as the east and west or as light

and darkness.

“The fourteen millions of Catholics in America are Romanists

first and American citizens afterwards, if at all.

“So far as patriotism is concerned, no good Catholic knows what

it means.

“She uses every possible trick known to the wily politician to

get her minions into office in order to take unfair advantage for the

benefit of Mother Church and against the good of the country at

large.

“That half a hundred Italians in petticoats on the banks of the

Tiber should presume to interfere in any way with the liberties of

Americans and seek, through fourteen millions of their benighted

dupes, to destroy our free institutions is a colossal outrage to civili-

zation and to the freedom we as Americans have so generously ex-

tended to all the world as a refuge from tyranny and despotism

everywhere.”

“Our Sunday Viisiiitor,” the penny weekly, is distributed at (the door of

more than 2,000 Catholic churches every Sunday.

Platform

1. We demand absolute separation of church and state, as guaranteed
in the constitution.

2. That the public schools are essential to the safety of the state; that

such schools should be free from ecclesiastical influence or control; that the

persons disloyal to the government or to the public schools should be rigor-

ously excluded from teaching therein.

3. That freedom of speech and of the press be preserved inviolate.

4. That there shall be no division of public property or funds for sec-

tarian purposes whatsoever.

5. That there shall be full religious toleration under the American flag.

6. We demand stronger safeguards against the admission of undesirable
immigrants, by sufficient tests as to the literacy, health and morals.

7. We urge an amendment to the constitution so that subjects of foreign
powers shall be denied election franchise.

centenary of the revolt of Luther in 1517, and are seeking to enlist

the sympathy and co-operation of all Protestant denominations and

all anti-Catholic forces. Every public demonstration in honor of

Luther during that year will be an open protest against Catholicism,

and will be joined in by all wlho are constantly demanding liberty of

thought and speech. NOW is the time to prepare Catholics and
Protestants alike to throw water on Luither enthusiasm.

tive members. A postscript to the letter reads: “This letter has
been printed to save time and labor, because we are sending it out

The letter also contains this paragraph: “We will gladly send
a representative to explain our plans and objects more fully to your

The A. P. A. Revived
New York Evening World, Nov. 24, 1913.

“After twenty years efforts are being made to revive the American Pro-
tective Association, better known in its halcyon days as the ‘A. P. A.’ Cir-
culars have been sent out in New York from No. 3 Fifth Avenue, a rooming
house, which is said to be only temporary headquarters.

“Officers of the new ogranization say their plans have been maturing for
three months, and that while surviving members of the old A. P. A. had
nothing to do with the new organization, they will take part in it. They
added they expected to work through various societies, some of which had

already premised their support.

“The circular sent out in New York starts: ‘STOP. LOOK. LISTEN/
The officers of the new organization, as announced, are: President, George
P. Newman; Vice President and General Manager, John N. Parker; Secre-
tary and Treasurer, Daniel Kennedy.

“Here, in part, is the statement of the revivification of the A. P. A., given

in the official circular, which, by the way, misspells the name of Mayor-elect
Mitchel:

you not discern the signs of the times? It is putting its puppets in office all

over the country.

‘John Purroy Mitchell, Romanist, and member of the Corrigan Council

Knights of Columbus, has been elected Mayor of New York.

‘William Sulzer was deposed as Governor because he was a Protestant,

so as to allow Glynn, a Roman Catholic and a Knight of Columbus, to become
New York’s first Roman Catholic Governor. Malone, another Knight of
Columbus, has been appointed Collector of the Port of New York, at the
behest of the ‘system.’

‘Mitchell, under the K. of C. oath, is bound to appoint only Papists,

when possible, to offices under his administration.
“‘The cry was ‘TAMMANY HAS BEEN DEFEATED!” But has it?

What is Tammany? Simply the fighting arm of the Roman Church, and
Mitchell himself has said that he is ‘one of her loyal sons.’ So what may
we expect?

‘“THE AMERICAN PROTECTIVE ASSOCIATION has been organized
by a large committee of patriotic citizens to revive the splendid work of the
old A. P. A. of twenty years ago, and already the various Secret Societies

under the ban of the heads of the Romish propaganda have offered their
earnest support.’

laws are to be recalled. Most delectable is the clause which reads: ‘We

demand that all laws exacting a ‘Christian’ morality be abrogated, and that

in their place a natural morality be substituted, with equal human rights
and an unpartisan and true liberty.’

”

Hundreds of Catholic societies take the distribution of “Our Sunday

Visitor” in hand. It has been the best stimulus to make Catholic societies

useful.



AMERICAN MASONS
PRESERVE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Masonic Chronicle, August 8, 1913.

The American Federation of Catholic Societies will hold a convention
at Milwaukee August 10-13. Archbishop Ireland will be one of the principal

speakers. According to the daily press, “Questions that will be pushed by

him and by other speakers will be state aid for parochial schools.”

If the Catholic Church can succeed in obtaining a part of the public

funds, it will be the first step toward destroying the public schools. It will

also be a fatal blow to religious liberty. The Catholic Church is the greatest
political and business institution in the world. It is opposed to free schools,

free speech and free press. By putting into force its edicts on these ques-
tions it has reduced the proudest governments of the world to mere pigmies

among nations.

Place a part of the public moneys at its command and it will soon ask
for more. MASONS gave to this country free speech, free schools and a free
press. They have been the most potent factor in making this country the
greatest on earth. If this republic is to live and continue to prosper, its

citizens must have the advantages of education, and these fundamental

principles of government must be perpetuated.

The Catholic Church is the only religious institution that attempts to
meddle with state or public affairs.

IT IS THE DUTY OF EVERY INDIVIDUAL MASON to resist with all
the power at his command any attempt on the part of any society or institu-
tion to mix religion with public affairs. Religious prejudice has caused un-

politics of the nation. Any effort on the part of any religious denomination
told misery to many peoples in the past. It cannot nor will not purify the
to dictate or meddle with state affairs should result in disaster to the church

or societies so offending. Separation of church and state is a fundamental,

principle of the government of the United States.

THE “MASONIC SENTINEL”

Chicago, December 10, 1913.

“Two forces have been pitted against one another since the dawn of
history: individual freedom against dogmatism or ignorance. Masonry stands

for light; dogmatic institutions for darkness or organized ignorance, super-

stition and fear—the consent of mother church, not the consent of the
governed.

“No Mason has the right to an opinion unless that opinion is the result
of study of the question. The Mason who has to be taught to vote I consider
beneath my notice.

“The enemies of the principles of Masonry are organized. In Toledo,

Ohio, ninety per cent of the appointees to office were Roman Catholics. The

same tiling almost was true of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Wheeling, W. Va., until
an uprising last year.

“In Wheeling, W. Va., Scottish Rite Masons and Roman Catholics are
numerous. The priests told their parishioners how to vote. On the day of
the election there was a Knight Templar meeting in a town ninety miles

away. The Knights got together, said this will not do, hired a special train,

went home, voted, got on board their special and went back to the Knight

Templar conclave. Result, a defeat of organized dogmatism and fear.

“Roman Catholics demand division of the school fund and claim that
they have double taxation. Statement is being made by them that if division
is denied them, they will refuse to pay taxes. If an attempt is made to
collect the taxes by constraint, then will be the time for bullets. In Cleve-

land, 27,500 pupils are in parochial schools; in Chicago, 112,000 pupils in

parochial schools, and 300,000 in public schools; in Cincinnati, 22,000 pupils

in parochial schools, 46,000 in public. In the whole country it is claimed

there are 1,400,000 pupils in parochial schools and that in the public schools

seventy per cent of the teachers are Catholics. Catholics are opposed to the

public schools and are sworn to obey His Holiness. What would happen to
a merchant who employed the friends of his enemies to run his business?
Yet this is what we are doing when we employ Catholics as teachers in our
public schools. .

“The remedy is publicity, but this is difficult to obtain because the news-

papers will not print anything against the Catholics. This is for business

reasons. Second remedy recommended is education. The parochial schools
teach the catechism and the dogma of obedience, which is the policy of the
Jesuits, who have been expelled from every nationality on the face of the
earth, and even from Rome itself. Third, to tax all church property as a
matter of equity. Fourth, to keep out as teachers in the public schools all

Catholics.

“The greatest and strongest asset of Rome today is the fact that they
propose to vote solid, often giving them the balance of power politically.

The incredulity of the Protestants and their skepticism as to the hold of
Rome politically, and their disbelief that the Catholics can ever rule
America, are also assets of Catholicism. They cannot rule when once the
country is aware of it, for fifteen million Catholics cannot rule eighty-five

million Protestants. Publicity is needed to avoid the clash or arson and

bloodshed that would result from allowing a force which works for the

slavery and degradation of the people to obtain the upper hand even for a

moment.”

“The Masonic Observer,” (Minneapolis) November 29, 1913.

“That Brother Irving P. Jones, Secretary of Minnesota Hodge, No. 224,

who is in charge of the Bertillon room at police headquarters, has ‘mugged’
over four hundred prisoners during the past year and NOT ONE of them
belonged to the Masonic fraternity. Ninety-nine per cent, however, pro-

fessed the Roman Catholic faith. No comment is necessary.”

Only a NATIONAL Catholic weekly can counteract the influence of anti-
Catholie organs, which are national. “Our Sunday Visitor” goes into every

state in the Union.



The Denominational Press

The denominational press has always been antagonistic, but in

November. 1912, the Christian Herald, of New York, made a strong
appeal for all Protestant papers to join them in a “War on Pome.”

From that time the many which reach our office are as bitter as

the Menace, only more dignified, and with a certain air of sincerity.

Commenting on the call in the Christian Herald, the Christian

Standard (December, 1912), says:

“The denominational press lacks the moral and spiritual backbone to

stand out boldly against the encroachments of Romanism, and to denounce

the Papacy as the arch-enemy of religious freedom in this republic. The

fact is that the testing time has come when every Protestant newspaper,
whatever its denomination, must ishow its colors and step bravely to the

front on this great issue, or it must inevitably fall to the rear and be mus-

tered out. We have reached the crossroads when we must choose either
the path that leads to a new Reformation, which shall revitalize and unify
Protestantism; or the road that leads to dishonor and defeat, and bow to the
triumph of the Romanist campaign to ‘make America Catholic.’

”

ROMAN CATHOLICISM.
The “Pentecostal Herald,” July 1, 1913.

“If the Protestants of this nation should follow the program which the

Romanists are following and have followed for years, it would most cer-

tainly result in bloody conflict. The Protestantism of these United States
can take its choice, see the nation ruled by Rome and degraded, or prepare
for one of the most fearful struggles in human history.”

ENDORSES THE “MENACE.”
The “Free Methodist,” Chicago, July 15, 1913.

“We commend the ‘Menace* because of its plainness, fearlessness and
timeliness. The ‘Menace* is doing a great work in exposing the machina-
tions of the Romish church, and it is no wonder that Rome is doing her best
to suppress that paper.”

A SEARCH-LIGHT ON THE PAPAL SYSTEM.
The “Christian Standard,” May 17, 1913.

“The success with which all journals that are conducting a campaign
of enlightenment in regard to the Catholic question have met demonstrates
the profound interest there is in the subject. Those who are really interested
in this question should lose no time in securing ‘Father’ Crowley’s great

work, ‘Romanism a Menace to the Nation.’ Mr. Crowley has stated the issue
clearly and forcefully and confounds none of them. It is the most sane and
intelligent work that has yet appeared on this subject. A priest for over
twenty-one years, having done his best to work a reformation within the

tives a ‘petition of the Holy Name Societies of the Diocese of Newark, N. J.,
protesting against using the United States mail to injure the Catholic

Church.’ and on Friday, July 25, there was presented in the same place a
‘petition of the Holy Name Societies of the Diocese of Newark, N. J., pro-

testing against the publication of the ‘Menace.’ These petitions indicate

very clearly the attitude of Roman Catholics toward the question of freedom
of the press.”

“Christian Patriot,” Indianapolis, Ind., July 19, 1913.

“The Roman Cathoiics are attempting to gain control of the government,
and also to obtain power for the purpose of using the public school funds

for the administration of their parochial schools.”

ROMANISM.
The U. B. Herald.

“Romanism is the .same political manipulator that she has been during
all her history* Whenever and wherever her prestige will warrant she seeks

to control municipal and national government. Pier thirst for political power

is so great that she scruples not to resort to the most unprincipled measures

to accomplish her designs. Her subjects recognize the authority of the pope

as superior to that of any political government, and their dark and villainous

schemes to undermine our public school system and ruin our American

institutions are regarded as ‘holy’ if thereby the church is enabled to In-

crease her power and prestige. Every loyal American citizen should be fully

awake to the destructive purposes and workings of the despotic church of

Rome. She iis a well-fortified, aggressive foe to our sacred institutions.”

These and many other denominational papers advertise anti-

Cahholic books for sale; the Christian Herald has a circulation of

300,000; the Protestant Magazine contains scholarly articles and

appeals to men of education. The danger-cry of all is : oppose the

encroachments of Rome on American liberties and her schools.—

“At the closing session of the Church Efficiency Congress, held last even-

ing at the First Christian church, a statement was read and unanimously

adopted, in which the action of the congress in bringing Jeremiah Crowley,

the ex-priest, to this city and placing him on the week’s program, is upheld.

“The Protestant churches were reviewed by P. Y. Pendleton, and the

Roman church by Jeremiah J. Crowley, at present an honored citizen of
Cincinnati, and a member of the Presbyterian church, who came to us en-
dorsed by J. Wilbur Chapman, Bishop Burt, Robert McIntyre, The New York
Independent, The New Age, a Masonic magazine, the Herald and Presbyter,
the leading Presbyterian paper of America.

“From the above it is clear to any one that no unusual or unfair treat-
ment was given to the Roman Catholic Church. It was discussed as were
the other parts of the so-called universal church of Christ, and if its treat-

ment seemed harsher, it was due to the personality of the speaker and the

nature of his theme.”

What Crowley Said
“Romanism is the greatest menace of modern times. Unless suppressed

it will destroy our liberties. The pope absolutely dominates American politics
and dictates American politics.

“The Roman church is bent on destroying the public schools and wiping
them from the face of the earth and substituting its own schools.

“Mr. Crowley was constantly interrupted by storms of applause from the
audience which filled the church and listened closely to his address.”

At Pittsburg
Pittsburg Post, July 23, 1913.

Three thousand persons were turned away from the Nixon Theatre last
night, and about 3,000 gained admission to hear Jeremiah J. Crowley deliver

the second of a series of anti-Catholic lectures. The subject was “Savanarola.”
About 200 ministers of Pittsburgh and Allegheny county sat on the stage
and joined in the frequent applause. Rev. W. G. Cole of Carrick, one of the
chief witnesses in the councilmanic investigation of the North-side riot,

introduced the speaker.

The Zeal of Anti-Catholic

Workers.

My Dear Father Noll:

Have just finished a long missionary trip through Wisconsin, Minnesota
and North Dakota; have preached to hundreds of non-Catholics. I was more
than pleased to find “Our Sunday Visitor” in many places doing its work.
It is certainly a mistake for any one to imagine that “The Menace” is not

doing harm. Here in Bismarck you will find it on the parlor table like any

other magazine. I found that many receive “The Menace” who never sub-
scribed for it. Many intelligent non-Catholics are reading “The Menace”
and believe these vile things found therein. Wherever I go I hear priests

say: “Non-Catholics do not pay any attention to ‘The Menace.’” This is

absolutely false; non-Catholic minds are simply being poisoned. I have

begun asking Catholics to take “Our Sunday Visitor,” and, after reading

same, send it to some non-Catholic. “Our Sunday Visitor,” if sent every-
where, and especially to the Dakotas, will be a Menace to “The Menace,”
and will do much to prevent non-Catholics from being poisoned.

“I am writing you these few lines to let you know how the ‘Menace’ is
circulating here. I thought there was not one copy to be found in Baltimore.

I aim an agent for the ‘International Catholic Truth Society.’

“Saturday, October 25th, I went to a Socialist news-stand and asked if

they sold the ‘Menace.’ The reply was ‘No, but I can tell you where to get
it.’ So he pointed out to me a traffic policeman on the corner of Light and
Baltimore streets, and said he would fix me up. After thanking him I went
to the policeman, and inquired. He said: ‘Owing to the many Catholics
that are on the force, in order to protect ourselves, we have secretly organ-
ized a ‘Menace’ Club, which, of course, is against the rules. If you desire

to subscribe, give me your name and address and twenty-five cents, which
is for one year’s subscription.’ Before I handed him the money, the leader
of the club walked up, and the policeman said: ‘You are just in time; I

have a new subscriber.’ Sergeant Howard answered: ‘I am just on my way
to the post office to get a money order to send away. I have a large list to
send iin.’ So I gave him my money. Officer Scribner promised to bring me
a copy Monday.

During the present anti-Catholic activity many of our people

have been shocked to learn that those whom they regarded as true



friends were bigots in secret. The number that work in the dark is

legion. A sample

‘‘As on former occasions, when I have written in defense of the Church,

her priests, etc., my mail has been flooded with vile publications against

sisters, priests and the Church in general; also tracts from Protestant pub-

lishing houses telling me how I might find the ‘Light.’ I can pardon the

latter, but the former are abominable, and should be suppressed by law. I

find, however, that ‘our friends, the enemy,’ will stop at nothing. I remember

that on another occasion, on opening my front door, I found that during the

night some one had stuck pictures of sisters, in decolie-tie dresses, all around

the door-frames, in full view of any one passing, so I fully believe that the

Catholics Must Work With Equal Zeal.

“Catholic Americans should thoroughly appreciate the vital lessons

taught by the ,intolerant nations of France, Portugal and Italy.

“The prevailing persecutions of the Church :in France and Portugal are

the penalties of indifference to threatened dangers. Let that fact be kept

prominently in mind.

“Today in this country Catholicity is similarly imperiled. There are

impending dangers, and there is grave indifference. It is unwise to sit down

with the conceits of Constitutional guarantees, or to rest our security upon

the fair-mindedness of a fickle popular sentiment in the face of an apparently

increasing anfii-Catholic movement. If an evil day of long duration and

great suffering can be inflicted on the Church in such Catholic countries as

France and Portugal, wherefore are there grounds for complacent confidence

that such a thing is approachably impossible in a nation of an approximate

50,000,000 Christian indifferentists.

“Americans must school themselves intelligently in their faith; they

must be ready for intellectual battle with ignorance; they must be active,

aggressive and militant for God, Church and Country; they must contribute

their portion to the civic, social and political duties and responsibilities of

citizenship, and thus by moving into prominent places make the faith they

profess better known and better appreciated ; then may Catholic Americans

rest secure, and laugh to scorn any and all un-American movements born in

intolerance and anti-Oafholie hatred. For religious bigotry cannot live

where a true knowledge of Catholicity reigns.”
